Apple’s (PRODUCT) RED Have Contributed $70 Million To Fight AIDS So Far

Apples (PRODUCT) RED Have Contributed $70 Million To Fight AIDS So FarIn the past you might have seen some Apple products on sale with the (PRODUCT) RED tag on them. For those unfamiliar, these products when sold have their sales contribute to a charity foundation, so if you’d like to do something for charity and buy yourself a new gadget or accessory from Apple, these are the products to keep an eye out for.

That being said, it seems that Apple’s (PRODUCT) RED has been something of a success as the charity has recently announced that Apple’s contributions thus far have managed to reach the $70 million mark, which we have to say is a lot of money! In fact it was back in September 2013 that Apple hit the $65 million mark, so we guess they have managed to raise another $5 million from then until now.

As it stands the (PRODUCT) RED products that Apple sells includes version of the iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod touch, iPad Smart Cover, and several iPhone cases which bears the charity’s branding as well. Sales of the products go straight to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. This is not the only way Apple has participated in the charity.

In the past, the company has changed its white Apple logo to a red logo to in support of World AIDS Day. Apple’s designer, Jony Ive, has also created several Apple products, like the (PRODUCT) RED Mac Pro and Ear Pods which have been auctioned off and have the proceeds donated to charity.

Liftware Self-Stabilizing Spoon Normalizes Lives

Last year, Lift Labs Design unveiled Liftware Stabilizer, a spoon with an electronic self-stabilizing handle. Liftware makes it easy for people suffering from tremors – such as those with Parkinson’s Disease – to eat on their own. This month Lift Labs is back on Indiegogo, this time not just for itself but to help others as well.

For those who are not familiar with Liftware, its handle has accelerometers that detect motion and actuators to compensate for said motion.

Liftware is used only as a spoon for now, but because all of its electronics are in the handle Lift Labs will release additional attachments in the future, including a fork and a key holder.

Pledge at least $300 (USD) on Indiegogo to get a Liftware as a reward. You can also get the device directly from Lift Labs Design, but as stated in the video above, the company will match all Indiegogo pledges up to $50,000 dollar for dollar. That means for every $295 it collects, the company will donate two Liftware units to the International Essential Tremor Foundation.

Help Get Clean Water to Kids in Need, Just by Ignoring Your Damn Phone

Help Get Clean Water to Kids in Need, Just by Ignoring Your Damn Phone

There are a lot of dumb, pointless apps out there that make it hard to put our smartphones down. That’s what makes Unicef’s new project for World Water Month doubly brilliant—it raises funds to provide clean drinking water to needy kids, by encouraging smartphone users to take a break from the touchscreen. Sounds like a true win-win.

U2′s Invisible Single Raises $3 Million For Charity

U2s Invisible Single Raises $3 Million For CharityThe beauty of iTunes and other music services that allows single downloads is that songs in general are quite affordable. After all paying a dollar for a song does not seem to be too much to ask, right? Throw in the fact that the money spent will be going towards a good cause probably helps as well, and that’s exactly what U2’s free “Invisible” single did. The single was launched as part of a promotion with Bank of America, who agreed to donate $1 to (Product) RED for every download of U2’s Invisible single, and as it turns out it was quite a success.

According to the reports, the song has been downloaded over 3 million times since its ad was run during the Super Bowl. Based on this, the Bank of America is expected to donate over $3 million to the Global Fund to fight AIDs, tuberculosis, and malaria. Apple themselves have donated over $65 million since 2006. As it stands the song is still available for download but it is no longer free and will cost users $1.29 as the promotion has since ended. However the good news is that proceeds of the song, all of it, will continue to be given to the same charity, so for those who missed out on the deal but still want to do their bit for charity will be able to do so by heading on over to iTunes for the download.

Selfie Police: Your Next Selfie Could Cost You $1

Selfie Police: Your Next Selfie Could Cost You $1Back in 2013, the term “selfie” was decided to be one of the words of the year. For those unfamiliar, selfie is a term used to refer to photos that one takes of themselves using their phones, cameras, or tablets. Taking selfies is not new but 2013 definitely took it to new heights where people were actually taking selfies while driving and even at funerals, leading to many raised eyebrows. Well it looks like finally there will be someone to police that kind of behavior in the form of the Selfie Police. While they do call themselves the Selfie Police, their legal authority is pretty much along the same lines as the English Police, the Fashion Police, and so on.

Basically they are a website launched by Brigham Young University students who encourage users to pay a “fine” for selfies that they take. In fact the website even encourages friends and families to “rat” on other friends and family members that have been known to take selfies. Of course the $1 fine is entirely voluntary where there the proceeds actually go to an organization called Vittana which helps provide loans to students in developing countries to help further their education. According to the Selfie Police’s co-creator, Chas Barton, “When we first came up with the idea we were trying to think of how to engage our generation in giving […] It’s tricky because we’re such a selfish generation, so the question we asked was not how do we make our generation charitable, but how do we turn selfishness into charity. That’s where Selfie Police was born.”

Xbox One Employee Edition up for Bidding: The All in White Entertainment System

Microsoft has one heck of an item for zealous Xbox fans and videogame collectors. The company has donated a very special edition of the Xbox One to UK charity GamesAid. The special next generation console, which is called the Xbox One White Exclusive Launch Team Commemorative Special Edition, is now up for grabs on eBay. Hopefully you don’t have to say its full name for voice commands.

As its name implies, the console is supposed to be given only to Microsoft employees who worked on the Xbox One. It even has the phrase “I Made This” right in front. A couple of months ago Redditor Kinect10DLL revealed all of the perks that come with the special console. This particular auction is only for the console, a matching white controller, a Kinect (which for some reason is still in black), a headset and two exclusive achievements.

You can bid for this special Xbox One on eBay. As of this writing bidding for the console is at an astronomical £17,100(~$27508 USD), and there’s still a couple of days before the auction ends. Sadly it seems that the auction is being bombed with false bids – at one point the auction showed a bid of over $200,000. And gamers wonder why we’re perceived as immature.

GamesAid said it has asked eBay for help with the false bids. If you’re planning on bidding, you should contact GamesAid first to confirm that you’re serious about buying the console. Maybe they can tell you what the actual minimum bid is as well.

Apple has donated over $65 million to Product Red for AIDS research

DNP Apple has raised over $65 million to fight AIDS for Project Red

Say what you will about Apple’s business practices, but its philanthropy work is hard to discount. Cupertino has raised over $65 million for Product Red’s fight against AIDS since 2006, the charity tweeted today. The announcement comes from the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting, where the male half of Bonoprah took the stage, commenting that the tech giant “is certainly leading the crew” in terms of donations to the effort — something that should speak much louder than a broken click wheel ever will.

SimCity’s Red Cross charity pack aids real-world disaster victims

    Image

SimCity fans know nothing feels better than saving their other family from pollution and sickness — except, you know, helping out some fellow human beings. A new collaboration with the Red Cross combines players’ digital altruism with humanitarian aid for real-world disaster victims. Starting today, you’ll be able to purchase a $9.99 “charity pack” created specifically for the game, with a relief center, tents and two emergency response vehicles. In the event of a meteor strike, earthquake or tornado, the Red Cross tents will automatically appear to provide aid for injured Sims, and a fleet of ambulances and fire trucks will be on call as well.

SimCity creator EA Games has pledged to contribute at least 80 percent of profits (a minimum of $100,000) from the charity pack to the Red Cross National Societies. The set will be available for a year, and you’ll be able to keep it through the life of your current game. Currently, the pack is only available for players in 10 countries, including Denmark, France, the US and the UK.
