Google’s One Today app for Android lets you donate $1 to select nonprofit organizations

DNP Google's One Today app for Android lets you donate $1 to select nonprofit organizations

Google may be raking in the dough, but that doesn’t mean the company is lacking a social conscience. Yesterday, the software giant silently released its One Today app for Android. Available in the US by invite only, the setup features a daily profile on a different nonprofit project and gives you the option to donate $1 to its cause. Payments require a Google Wallet account and gifting is currently limited to a buck per day. If you’re looking to raise more capital for a specific cause, you can challenge friends via social networks to donate and then match their donations (up to a point). After all, this is about bringing networks of people together to bolster the spirit of giving. Check out the adjacent source link to apply for an app invite.

OrigAudio Beets headphones redefine KIRF: Keepin’ It Real Fibrous (video)

OrigAudio Beets headphones redefine KIRF Keepin' It Real Fibrous video

We’ve seen plenty of Beats-focused KIRFs in our time, some better than others. Few, however, play quite so directly on the name as OrigAudio’s Beets. For $25, adopters get a set of headphones that bear little direct resemblance to Dr. Dre’s audio gear of choice, but are no doubt bound to impress friends — at least, up until they see a root vegetable logo instead of a lower-case B. Thankfully, there’s more to it than just amusing and confusing peers. Every purchase will lead to a donation of canned beets (what else?) to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. For us, that’s reason enough to hope that Beats doesn’t put the kibosh on OrigAudio’s effort. Besides, we could use some accompaniment for our BeetBox.

eBay’s Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay's Sell it Forward splits auction proceeds with Goodwill

eBay’s latest initiative is a little different from its more recent efforts that have focused mostly on re-branding and expanding the reach of PayPal. Sell it Forward encourages users to sell their used clothes and donate half the proceeds to Goodwill. The pilot program is currently only available in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin, though the company is going out of its way to make the process as painless as possible for those in eligible areas. Instead of creating listings for each item, wannabe auctioneers need only fill the pre-paid mailing bag (provided by eBay) with the clothes and accessories they wish to sell. Everything else will be taken care of for them. Employees will decide if your wares are in decent enough condition to sell, create a listing and, if the item is sold within 14 days, split the proceeds between the “seller” and Goodwill. If the item remains unsold for 14 days it becomes a straight donation to the charity. If you’re in one of the trial areas and want to give Sell it Forward a go yourself, hit up the source link.

Humble Bundle game sales now coming weekly, starting with Bastion

Humble Bundle game sales now coming weekly, starting with Bastion

Who would’ve thought that letting consumers pay what they think is fair for quality games would prove popular? That’s the concept behind Humble Bundle, and so far, it’s been rather good to developers and charities alike. Now, deals from the company are set to get a whole lot more frequent, as it’s just announced weekly game sales that’ll supplement the monthly bundle offers. You’ll find a new game from Humble Bundle go up for sale each Tuesday, and to kick things off, the company is starting with Bastion, an RPG from Supergiant Games. Just $1 nets you a Steam key to the game, but if common decency isn’t enough of a reason to pay more, you’ll find bonus content and merchandise up for grabs, too. This week’s charities include the EFF and Child’s Play, but you’ve only got seven days to act before another game takes its place. Best start checking it out, and you can start with a demo of Bastion after the break.

The MiiR Tumbler: Drink Coffee & Give People Drinking Water

I love drinking coffee, and as such, I’ve tried many different ways to reduce the cost of my addiction. For one, I rarely drink coffee from coffee shops, preferring to make my own and take it to work. As such, I need a good portable mug to get the job done.

The Tumbler from MiiR may look like an ordinary insulated coffee cup, but what makes it special is that when you purchase one, you will not only get the Tumbler, you’ll be giving someone clean drinking water for a year! The Tumbler was launched as a project on Indiegogo, and its goal is to provide as many people access to clean drinking water as possible.

The stainless steel Tumbler is insulated with double-walled construction, and a BPA-free plastic sipper lid. Each one comes with a tracking bracelet, which allows you to track the impact of your purchase on getting clean water to people.

The project has already surpassed its modest $10,000 funding goal, and a pledge of $20(USD) or more will buy your MiiR Tumbler.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s… Super-Kia!

Sure, Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound and fly all over the place, but as Clark Kent, he still needs to drive in order to blend in. What do you think he drives? Apparently, it’s a Kia.

After showing off a round of superhero cars last Fall, DC Comics and KIA teamed up to make this Superman Optima Hybrid for the We Can Be Heroes charity. It was recently shown off at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. This super KIA features a grille that resembles Superman’s belt, a paint job that matches the big blue Boy Scout’s costume, along with red wheels and trim and trunk that mimic his cape.

The interior is even better, with Superman emblems on the electric blue seats and steering wheel. If Clark is going to drive this, he is going to give his secret away though. Brake. Brake before Zod!

Wil Wheaton’s Doodled-on Wesley Crusher Card up for Auction

Wil Wheaton has a gnarly sense of humor. Maybe that’s something you sort of develop if you play a character that creators loved but audiences loathed on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yes, folks, Wil Wheaton is the guy who played Ensign Wesley Crusher. He’s also a superstar among geeks.

Wil Wheaton CardHe also happens to have a big heart.

Wil was recently asked for an autograph by the friend of a friend who loved Star Trek. Wil happily obliged, but when he signed the card, he accidentally over-signed and left a huge black mark on his face. So he did what anyone would’ve done in the same situation: he doodled on a pair of sunglasses over his eyes.

Then to complete the whole thing, he added on a ‘Yeeaahh!’ on top to transform the sunglasses into the Sunglasses of Justice. Yeah, that’s all it takes.

Long story short, Wil’s friend forgot who the autograph was supposed to be for so he’s decided to put it up for auction instead – and all the proceeds go to charity. Bidding began at $1 but now it’s up over $1000, and the auction closes late tonight.

The 1:Face Watch: Support a Good Cause While Telling the Time

You’ve probably seen people with rubber-band-like bracelets advocating one cause or another, but if you’re like me, you’d appreciate something a little more functional. The 1:Face Watch supports a variety of causes and lets you tell the time at the same time.

face watch indiegogo project

The 1:Face Watch was designed by Mirza Minds. It’s quite minimal, which I like. Each color supports a different cause. The white watch provides food for children, the pink watch provides a mammogram for someone in need.

All of these causes are backed by reputable charities, so you don’t have to worry about where your money is going to.

The 1:Face Watch was launched as an Indiegogo project, and you can get in on the action for as little as $40(USD). With 27 days left, the project has amassed over $100,000 in funding, with a goal of $25,000 so it will definitely go into production

The Kia Optima Batmobile: Batman’s Spare Car

Kia Motors, DC Entertainment, and RIDES Magazine unveiled their first of 8 Justice League-inspired Kias at the recent 2012 New York Comic Con. The launch was part of DC’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, which helps fight famine in Africa.

This Batman-inspired Optima was on display at New York’s Time Warner Center and is the beginning of a 10-month partnership based on the characters that make up the Justice League. They hope to raise awareness of the charity campaign, which Batman would certainly approve of.

I’m not sure that Batman would ever buy a Kia, but I love what they have done with this car. It certainly looks great with the whole Batman theme – especially that grill.
