SunVolt Portable Solar Power Station Charges Gadgets at “Outlet-like” Speeds

If you’ve used a consumer-grade portable solar charger, then you know that it takes them a considerable time to do their job. That’s why Don Cayelli invented SunVolt, which he claims can recharge gadgets at “outlet-like” speeds. I think that’s equivalent to about socket-like speeds in metric.

sunvolt portable power station

The SunVolt is available in 10W and 15W variants. Both come in a practical carrying case and will be able to charge any device that draws 5.5V or less, which should cover most if not all of your portable devices. The 10W model has two charging ports, while the 15W model has three. As you’ll see in the video below, the charging ports can be used at once, although I’m not sure if the charging time will be significantly longer compared to using just one port.

A pledge of at least $85 (USD) on Kickstarter gets you a SunVolt.

Drill Gun Screwdriver Bangs Bolts In

A couple of months ago we saw a handgun that looks like an electric drill. Here’s the complete opposite, a electric screwdriver that looks like a handgun. Those poor shelves and cabinets won’t know what hit ‘em.

The 3.6-volt electric screwdriver comes with six drill bits that fit in the revolver chambers. Hopefully they fit snugly or else you might find yourself firing blanks one day.

You can pre-order the Drill Gun Power Screwdriver from Gadgets and Gear for $39.95 (USD), a savings of $10 off the regular price.

Legend of Zelda Hyrule Historia Book: A Link to Link and Everything Zelda

Fans of the Legend of Zelda series have long wondered about the chronology and connection of the 16 main games. As part of its 25th anniversary celebration this year, its creators finally revealed the canonical answer to these questions and more in the book Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia. Originally available only in Japan and only in Japanese, an English translation of the book is now slated for release in North America as well.

Aside from explaining “the full history” of the franchise – including details on the bloodline of the Hylians and their decline – the 274-page Zelda bible also contains lots of never before seen concept art and sketches, as well as a Skyward Sword manga. Here’s a look at the Japanese version of the book, courtesy of YouTuber MyGamingBoulevard:

The Amazon listing for the book claims that co-creator Shigeru Miyamoto co-authored the book, but all I can say for sure is that he penned the book’s introduction. You can pre-order the book from TFAW for $28 (USD) or from Amazon for $21. It will be available on January 29, 2013.

LiteCubes Freezable LED Lamps Make Drinks Twice as Cool

You’ve tried all sorts of cocktails and added all kinds of fruits, vegetables and tiny umbrellas to your drink. Why not add a shot of technology to the mix? LiteCubes are freezable nontoxic plastic 1″ blocks that light up. This has to be a rave party staple.

litecubes led ice cube

Each LiteCube contains an FDA-approved freezable gel. You can use LiteCubes to keep your drinks cool without watering them down. But the star in each cube is the LED. LiteCubes come in single or multicolored variants. You can set the light to glow steadily, flash slowly or at a seizure-inducing pace. You can also turn the LED off, which you should do after ever party. The lithium battery inside is not user-replaceable and is only guaranteed to last up to 12 hours.

You can order LiteCubes from a variety of places. Amazon has a 9-block sampler pack for about $19 (USD), but you can also order from OnlyCubes for $1.45-$1.65 per block or DirectGlow for discounted wholesale purchases.

DIY 3D Tracking Interface: Leap on the Cheap

The Leap motion controller is one of the most hyped gadgets unveiled this year, and it really is promising. But if you can’t wait until next year to have a 3D tracking interface, MAKE knows a way to make one using readily available tools.

diy 3d touchless tracking interface

The project is based on the RC time constant, which in simple terms is the time it takes to charge a capacitor. It has three cardboard plates covered with aluminum foil and connected to an Arduino Uno. When your hand (or any part of your body) approaches the plates, the capacitance of the plates change. A complementary program then interprets the changes to determine your hands’ position.

Head to MAKE for the full instructions for making the sensor. Obviously it’s not as accurate as the Leap or the Kinect, but at the very least you’ll have built something that show how capacitive sensors work. I’m sure more advanced tinkerers will find ways to make it more functional.

UDIRC RC Quadcopter Won’t Chop Much off Your Budget

Drones are a hot piece of tech these days, whether you’re a kid or an armed force. Rich kids and rich armed forces, that is: for instance, the popular Parrot AR.Drones sell for $250 to $300 (USD). Lucky for us, Brando stopped being weird for a second and got a hold of a cheap alternative.

udirc remote control quadcopter

Brando describes the UDIRC remote control multicopter as follows: “The Perfect Flying Object with this New Design Technology, The Most Stable (like the real?) Floating in the AIR. The Special Design of the One Press Button, which can make the UFO to Somersault in the Air. This RC UFO is powered by a Small piece Battery that is fueled with the USB External Dual Charging Box; therefore, UFO can Fly Never Stop with this Unlimited Power Supply!” Yeah. Still weird.

udirc remote control quadcopter 5 150x150
udirc remote control quadcopter 6 150x150

Because it doesn’t have a camera, fancy smartphone controls or good looks, the multicopter’s price is the good kind of weird: Brando is selling it for just $50(USD). That’s a steal for a quadcopter, but for a quadcopter with unlimited power supply? It’s the heist of the century.

Burner iOS App Provides Disposable Phone Numbers: Phoneception

If you watch The Wire or Breaking Bad, you’ve probably seen the characters use pre-paid cellphones to make their conversations, more, like, secretive. Yo. Anyway these phones are also called burners, hence the name of this new app.

burner iphone app

Burner lets iPhone users create temporary phone numbers that can be used to send and receive SMS or calls, just like “real” phone numbers. Users can create as many numbers as they want provided they have enough credits, which are bought in-app. Users can set expiry dates for the numbers or “burn” them whenever they want. It’s not as badass as cracking a phone in half and throwing it in the trash while sporting a mean and/or contemplative look though.

Burner is available on the iTunes App Store for $1.99 (USD). Yo. Kafkaesque. Bitch.

GameKlip Combines PS3 Controller with Android Phones: Poor Man’s PlayStation Phone

Unlike the messy controller situation in iOS, Android users have the benefit of workarounds for using controllers with their mobile device. One such solution is the Sixaxis Controller app, which pairs PS3 controllers with compatible Android devices. If you’re using the app, you might want to get the GameKlip as well.

Made by Ryan French, the GameKlip is simply a plastic mount that lets you connect a PS3 controller with an Android smartphone. The result is a semi-permanent, poor man’s portable gaming device.

The idea of carrying a PS3 controller around might seem odd at first, but if you frequently game on your Android device you might fall in love with this combo:

Wow. Now I’m envious of Android users. Again, the GameKlip is only a piece of plastic; you need an app and some tweaking to make the PS3 controller work with your phone, if it’s even compatible with the app. Still, it’s better than nothing.

As for the GameKlip, you can order it from its official website for $15 (USD). There’s also a $23 variant that comes with cables in case your smartphone can’t pair wirelessly with PS3 controllers. The GameKlip only works with the latest Galaxy phones and a couple of HTC models. Check out the official website to see the full list.

Bug-A-Salt Uses Salt Bullets to Kill Bugs, Time

Lorenzo Maggiore has come up with a sweet middle ground between fly swatters and pesticides. His invention is called Bug-A-Salt, a pump action gun that uses ordinary table salt as projectiles. It looks so fun to use you’ll wish your house had more pests. Or not.

bug a salt gun

The gun has a small effective range, about 3-5ft, but it’s not like you go much farther when you’re using a swatter or a pesticide spray. Speaking of pesticides, the salt means the gun is safe to use even in the kitchen. But it’s still not safe to shoot it at someone’s face. Plus it’ll be less weird to play with the Bug-A-Salt than with a can of Raid.

A pledge of at least $30 (USD) on its IndieGoGo fundraiser gets you a Bug-A-Salt. As of this writing it’s already garnered more than twice its $15,000 target, and that’s with 51 days left, so people are as excited as I am about this device. Check out its official website for more information.

Solar Charger Tree Feeds Gadgets with the Fruit of Electricity

If you have an abundance of mobile devices and sunlight, then you’ll find a solar charger handy. Admittedly, this one from Brando isn’t the prettiest charger – or ornament – you’ll see, but it does make up for it in versatility and price.

The charger has a built in 3,000mAh battery that can be charged either via the leaf-like solar panels or via AC power. It comes with a variety of connectors for all sorts of mobile devices, including Samsung, Apple, Nokia and micro USB.

This charger looks and works awfully similar to the Electree, but as I said, it’s main advantage is it’s way cheaper. You can order it from Brando for just $55 (USD).
