Space Monkey Online Storage Service: Crowdsourced Cloud

If you have even just one important digital file, you owe it to yourself and that intangible bundle of electricity that you hold dear to sign up for a cloud file storage service. Many of them have entry level services that offer a few gigabytes of storage for free. Of course they’ll happily sell you more space if you need to back up more data. But a small startup called Space Monkey wants you to trust in other users instead.

space monkey cloud storage

Space Monkey is a backup service that will offer 1TB of both local and online storage for $10 (USD) per month. The local storage is straightforward – you will simply use a complementary app to back up your files to the Space Monkey computer (pictured above), as if you were using an external drive. The online storage is where Space Monkey gets eccentric. Instead of setting up expensive and complicated datacenters, all Space Monkey subscribers act as each other’s datacenters. Bits of your data are encrypted and scattered among the Space Monkey computers of other subscribers, and vice versa.

It’s like the reverse of Bittorrent. In theory, the more subscribers that join Space Monkey, the more collective storage you all have and the more secure your data will be. And because they don’t have to setup datacenters, that also means less expenses and maintenance on the part of Space Monkey. Clever eh?

Is it just me or does the name Space Monkey just not fit into the product? They should’ve called it Data Offcenter. A pledge of at least $119 on Kickstarter lets you sign up for a 1 year 1TB subscription with Space Monkey.

If you’re not that familiar with online storage I highly recommend you shop around first. I can see what Space Monkey is getting at but there are dependable and affordable cloud services out there like CrashPlan or Backblaze. Or as I said earlier, try a free service first like the ones offered by Dropbox and Google to see if it’s good enough for you.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Big Boss Action Figure: Snake in a Box

Revoltech recently released this 25th Anniversary action figure of Naked Snake aka Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It comes with a lot of props, but the plainest of its props is also the best one: a cardboard box.

The Snake stealth item of choice is printed with “1987-2012″, which of course indicates the Metal Gear franchise’s first 25 years. Aside from the box, Big Boss has a lot of other toys, including an assault rifle, a handgun, a stun gun as well as “Zzzz” and “!” signs. Big Boss is also highly poseable – even his left eye is moveable – but his face is too cartoony for my taste. At least you can hide him in his box.

You can see lots of silly shots of the action figure on Amiami’s blog. It seems to be already sold out in toy stores, but you can still find a few units sneaking about on eBay. Just be prepared to pay significantly more than its original price.

Alleged budget iPhone shows off polycarbonate body, brings back good memories

Alleged leak suggests upcoming budget iPhone will revert to polycarbonate body

The rumor about that more affordable iPhone just keeps coming back, but this time we’re finally seeing some sort of progress. Courtesy of case manufacturer Tactus, we’re apparently looking at the upcoming budget iPhone’s polycarbonate shell, which was spotted at a factory that provides parts to Foxconn. It’s the same story for the “iPad 5” case leak that Tactus published two days ago (the same day as our own scoop), so the company does seem to have a good contact for these kinds of goodies — and it is a very competitive market, after all.

Compared to the old polycarbonate iPhone 3G and 3GS, this mysterious shell appears to have a flat back instead of the old curved one, meaning it should reduce manufacturing complexity and therefore the cost as well. Another notable difference is that the old volume rocker is split into two, and then there’s also the LED flash that was absent on the old polycarbonate iPhones. Tactus adds that this body is slightly taller, wider and thicker than the iPhone 4 and 4S, but what we do struggle to believe is that apparently the same factory is producing this shell in black and white as well as blue, red and yellow. A decoy, perhaps? Only time will tell.

USB Toilet Speaker: Probably Sounds Like Crap

We’ve featured some strange stuff inspired by toilets in the past, but this is definitely one of the more unusual ones I’ve come across. As far as I can recall, this is the first speaker I’ve come across that looks like a toilet.

toilet speaker

This craptastic speaker plugs into your computer’s USB port for power, and the 3.5mm jack for sound. Now why on Earth you’d ever want this gadget is beyond me. I suppose if you’re a plumber, you might buy one, but that’s about it.

Thankfully, the USB toilet speaker is only available in Korea at present, so you don’t have to worry about one of your co-workers replacing your Bose with one of these while you’re out on vacation. Oh damn, you can buy them here.

Grip Clip: Ears on Your Glasses

…Let me explain. You know how you can place a pencil and other small objects behind your ears? The Grip Clip lets you do that using the temples of your sunglasses, so you can store more things on your head! It’s great for craftsmen, students and even posers!

Ironic nerd charm get!

A pledge of just $5 (USD) on Kickstarter already gets you three Grip Clips. I wonder if you can clip two Grip Clips on one Grip Clip.

Compact Laser Tag Target Invented, Unending Fun to Be Had Soon

Do you want to play laser tag all the time? Please. Does a bear poop in the woods while dreaming of playing laser tag? Well now you can. A group of kids from the Young Tech Entrepreneur program of ThoughtSTEM have invented a small laser tag target. No need to wear the bulky body armor that doesn’t actually protect you from laser gunfire that isn’t really a laser but infrared!

portable laser tag target by thoughtstem

The yet unnamed gadget is controlled by an ATmega328 chip and has six LEDs that serve as the wearer’s hit points. Each LED goes from green to red each time the gadget is hit and is bright enough to shine through clothing. The current prototypes look rough, but with your help ThoughtSTEM can make the targets look more stylish. But what about the blasters? Well, you may already own a bunch of them. According to ThoughtSTEM anything that emits infrared light at 38 kHz can be used as a laser tag “gun”. That includes many TV remote controls. As you’ll see in the video below, cunning tinkerers can even make hidden infrared weapons or traps.

Pledge at least $75 (USD) on Kickstarter to reserve a fully assembled laser tag target. But if you’re good with electronics, pledging just $25 gets you the schematics and instructions to build the device. They really should come up with a name for it.

Megafeis G600 Android Handheld Crushes the Specs of the Sony PSP it Knocked off

I’m not sure what it is with the cheap Chinese gadget makers and their desire to make things that look like the Sony PSP, but they keep doing it. Funny thing is, the latest PSP lookalike has better specs than the PSP itself.

megafeis g600 android handheld

The Megafeis G600 handheld runs the Android 4.0 operating system. Under its hood it’s got a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU (compared to a 333MHz CPU in the PSP), along with a PowerVR SGX531 GPU. And unlike the PSP-3000, the Megafeis has a hi-res 800×480 display (more than twice the resolution of the PSP). It’s also got an HDMI 1.4 compatible video output and support for full 1080p video output.

megafeis hdmi

It’s only got 512MB of DDR3 memory built in, but you can expand up to 32GB of storage with a microSD card. You’ll also find a built-in motion sensor, and a 5-inch capacitive touchscreen – both of which aren’t present on the actual PSP. Wi-fi supports only 802.11 b and g, but still that beats the 802.11b PSP-3000.

Of course in addition to running Android games on it, you can use it with emulators to play classic N64, PSX, GBA, NES, SNES, and Genesis games on it. However, one thing that the Megafeis G600 can’t do out of the box is play actual PSP games – although you might be able to get the PPSSPP emulator to run on it.

One other thing that the Megafeis has going for it – it’s dirt cheap. It sells for under $85(USD) over at DealExtreme.

Ematic Genesis Prime 7-inch Tablet Runs Android for under $80

If you’ve never heard the name Ematic spoken in relation to Android tablets, don’t feel bad. The company isn’t exactly a household name, but it does produce some impressively cheap Android tablets. If you’re in the market for a low-budget Android tablet for yourself or a child, Ematic has just unveiled a new tablet that could be very compelling, called the Genesis Prime.

genesis tablets

It features a 7-inch multitouch display and runs the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. This is the first tablet from Ematic that is Google-certified, offering complete access to Google Play. Specs are nothing too thrilling with a 800×480 display, a 1.1 GHz processor, a 400MHz GPU and 512MB of RAM. It’s also got a low-res (.3MP) front-facing camera for chats and battery life is rated at just 4.5 hours, but what do you want for under 80 bucks?

Internal storage is 4 GB, expandable up to 32GB via MicroSD card, and the tablet includes 5 GB of cloud storage. The Ematic Genesis Prime is available for purchase right now for just $79.99(USD).

iBed iPad Lap Desk: iWant One

There are tons of keyboard add-ons for the iPad, but who are we kidding? Admit it, you’ve found it hard to actually get anything worthwhile done with your iPad. A few hours of browsing Reddit here and a few rounds of playing Magic there and suddenly it’s 4 AM. The perfect time to fire up Netflix and catch up on Archer. So really, we don’t need a keyboard. We need the iBed.

ibed ipad lap desk by kikkerland

It’s out of stock – unsurprisingly! – from maker Kikkerland as of this writing, but you can get the iBed from Taylor Gifts for $19 (USD) or from Amazon for $15. I know what you’re thinking. Don’t. Don’t buy one then use it to eat while you poop. Come on man. Even slackers have standards.

Photon 3D Scanner: A Scanner Cheaply

Slowly but surely, 3D printers are becoming more user-friendly and affordable. The Photon is proof that 3D scanners are following suit, thanks in no small part to crowdfunding and the creativity of small startups. Invented by Adam Brandejs and Drew Cox, Photon is beautiful, easy to use and affordable.

photon 3d scanner by matterform

Photon uses a high definition camera and two lasers to scan. It works with both Macs and PCs and connects via a USB 2.0 interface. Together with its free software, the Photon will let you scan any small object – up to 7.5″ diameter and 9.75″ height – in about 3 minutes. It can save 3D models as STL, .OBJ. and .PLY files.

Pledge at least $399 (CAD) (~$390 USD) on Indiegogo to reserve a Photon. I think that’s a very realistic price. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than the Lynx A, another crowdfunded 3D scanner. While the Lynx A justifies its price with its versatility and power, it’s overkill if all you want is a small object scanner. But I think I’ll pass on the Photon, the Lynx A and other 3D scanners. I’m waiting for a 3D fax machine – one that can both scan and print 3D objects.
