Archos 101 XS 2, ChefPad and ChildPad tablets hands-on (video)

With Archos, when it rains, it pours. We popped by the company’s booth at IFA this morning to take a peek at its customary deluge of devices. In addition to a number of handsets, Archos was showcasing a whole pile of tablets — though we’ve opted to focus on some of the more interesting ones, namely the 101 XS, ChefPad and ChildPad. And we have to say, while the company hasn’t always been known for sexy devices, all of the tablets we looked at had surprisingly nice builds. The company also gets some credit for seeking out some interesting niches within the tablet space.

The 101 XS 2 is certainly the most mainstream of the three. The Gen11 device is probably most notable for its included keyboard dock, which magnetically attaches to the front of the slate, protecting its screen when not in use. When you’re ready to go, pull off the thin cover, unfold the stand on the dock and stick the tablet into its port, propping it up in landscape mode.%Gallery-slideshow83285%

Archos ChildPad Tablet Arrives At The FCC

Archos ChildPad Tablet Arrives At The FCCYou know what they say about the little ones, they love nothing better than to follow us in our example. Dad and mom both have tablets each? Well, little Johnny wants one, too. The thing is, tablets are not something that are cheap to purchase for most families, and you do not simply replace a cracked screen just like that without taking quite a substantial hit to your bank account. Good thing there are companies out there who have designed child-friendly tablets at an affordable price too, and the Archos Childpad is one of them.

The Archos Childpad comes across as a kid-friendly tablet, where an 8” model is well on its way to keep the 7” Archos Childpad company, showing up at the hallways of the FCC earlier this week. The FCC documents failed to share any more details concerning the upcoming 8” Archos Childpad, apart from its name as well as back drawing, but it does seem most likely for this tablet to arrive with a 1024 x 768 pixel display, although a lower resolution would not be out of place, either, and there is a possibility of HDMI output thrown into the mix, too.

Archos Child Pad gets capacitive screen upgrade, minor price hike to $140

Parents who’ve already purchased Archos’ 7-inch Child Pad may be feeling somewhat miffed, as its screen’s been upgraded from resistive to capacitive just two months after launch. There’s no such thing as free multi-touch, so you’ll have to fork out another ten bucks on top of the original asking price for the new version of the ICS slate, bringing the total to a cent under $140. Other internals are identical, so customers can still expect a 1GHz ARM processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of expandable storage, with some exclusive chipmunk-based content to boot. Just remember to let the kids have a go once in a while.
