Foxconn chairman ‘has sought the aid of an exorcist’ to stop suicides

Um, suicide is not funny. Especially when it’s the eighth attempt — this one resulting in death, sadly — in three months by employees at a Foxconn facility in China. Yes, the very same factory we reported on last month that produces the gadgets we love so dearly. But check this little snippet from DigiTimes, translating the original Chinese language site Jinbw:

“Terry Guo, chairman of the Foxconn Group, has sought the aid of an exorcist in an attempt to put an end to the recent run of negative incidents at the plant.”

Seriously? And here we thought that improving working conditions might better serve employees. Engadget Chinese did some digging and confirms reports that Foxconn will bring in a monk(s) to perform a religious service meant “to bring peace to employees” — not necessarily meant to ward off evil.

In other news Foxconn just announced consolidated net profits of US$568.73 million for the first quarter of 2010, up 34.8 percent on the year.

Motorola MT810 Ophone to sport both capacitive and resistive digitizers, makes TV cameo

Remember the Motorola MT820 that got leaked in China last week? Well, for some mysterious reason it’s now adopted a new name — MT810 (but with the same codename, “North Sea”). According to IT168, the tipster isn’t exactly clear on whether the two model numbers refer to the same hardware configuration, but a quick search on the Chinese regulator’s database reveals just MT810, and that it’ll work on China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network and WAPI (China’s own take on WiFi). Going back to the latest leak: we’re now learning that the camera will capture 720p footage — apparently a first on the Ophone platform — and a minimum of 5-megapixel stills, accompanied by an LED flash. As for the flip cover, turns out it also serves as a capacitive touch layer, while the screen underneath is coupled with the good-old resistive digitizer — ideal for those who prefer writing Chinese with a pointy stylus instead of a sausage. Sadly, the tipster’s still mum about the cover’s rumored 3D filter capability, which would in theory go nicely with some live soccer on the phone’s CMMB mobile TV capability, as teased by a recent commercial on China’s national television — video after the break, if you can bear the jealousy.

[Thanks, Rachel]

Lenovo LePhone unboxed, exhaustively reviewed ahead of launch in China

We’re not sure how we missed this one, but it’s better late than never — turns out some lucky jerks in China were given a Lenovo LePhone to play with back in mid-April, and the guys at Sooyuu have just finished the fifth and final part of their lengthy review, just in time for the May launch. We weren’t expecting any changes since our last encounter at CES, but apparently the 3.7-inch screen’s now been upgraded from LCD to AMOLED, and like the Palm Pre, the LePhone also sports a gesture area below the screen. Of course, there’s also the never-before-seen packaging that we totally dig, not to mention the bundled goodies such as a leather case, a noise-isolation handsfree kit (but sans music and volume control), plus a magnetic dock adapter. As for software, the reviewer praises Lenovo’s snappy, heavily customized Android with its vast Chinese social networking service integration, music store, video apps, and an impressive Chinese turn-by-turn navigation suite. We almost want to adopt this baby, only to be let down by its 3.2-megapixel camera’s mediocre quality, lack of flash, and inability to autofocus. Anyhow, you can be the final judge — head over to Sooyuu for plenty more pictures.

Keepin’ it real fake: Nokia’s N8 beaten to release by lackluster knockoff

All together now: “Already?” KIRFers overseas are getting quicker and quicker with their knockoffs, and at this point, it’s safe to say that you’ll have an easier time wrapping your hands around a commendable Nokia N8 impostor than the real-deal. The outside looks an awful lot like Nokia’s first major Symbian^3-based handset, but the specifications are decidedly lackluster: you’ll get a 400 x 240 resolution display (3.2-inches), an MP4 player, FM radio, Bluetooth, webcam and a battery that’ll last three to five hours. Glaringly absent is a 12 megapixel camera, WiFi module and built-in 3G support, but it’s not like that stuff really matters — after all, what else would you expect for an unsubsidized price of just $105? Head on past the break for a video, rockstar.

[Thanks, Alain]

Chinese iPhone approved with WAPI WiFi

You might not be aware of this but the official Chinese iPhone offered by China Unicom since October 2009 doesn’t include WiFi — part of the reason for a continued Chinese grey market for iPhones sourced from neighboring countries. Now we’re seeing a China-approved 3G / GSM / Bluetooth device from Apple capable of using China’s homegrown WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) protocol. The new device — presumably a 4th generation iPhone — will join Dell’s Mini 3i as one of a few foreign handsets to feature the Chinese national standard for WLAN. See the 26 April approved regulatory filing after the break.

Update: The reference to “A1303” in the chinese language filing means this is likely a WAPI version of the iPhone 3GS, not a 4th gen device.

Lenovo’s 14-inch Z460 mentioned again overseas, this time with a Core i5 CPU

Ready for the latest international laptop mystery? Good. Lenovo‘s 14-inch Z460, which has yet to be confirmed as real by the company, recently surfaced over in China with a decidedly average set of specifications. A Core i3 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB SATA hard drive and Windows 7 Home Basic were found onboard, though no further details were divulged. Fast forward to today, and this very same machine is seemingly available to order on contract from Singapore’s own SingTel, complete with a Core i5-430M processor (2.26GHz), Windows 7 Home Premium, a 14-inch WXGA display, 500GB hard drive and 2GB of DDR3 memory. Naturally, a free integrated wireless modem is thrown in here, but now we’re stuck wondering if a) this is the last of the configuration options and b) when exactly Lenovo plans to come forward and officially introduce this thing. Any day now, Junior…

[Thanks, Zhang Yi Jiang]

Aigo’s surprisingly sexy 7-inch N700 tablet packs Android 2.1 and Tegra 2

Go ‘head Aigo! Get down with your bad self. Quite frankly, we never anticipated Aigo / Patriot to come through with a me-too tablet that actually made us take a second glance, but darn if this one isn’t quite the looker. And that’s before you’ve even had a moment to digest the specifications sheet. According to new details surfacing in China, this 7-inch machine will hum along on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 graphics chipset. There’s also 512MB of DDR2 memory, an 800 x 480 pixel multitouch display, 4/16/32GB of inbuilt storage, a USB socket, microSD slot, HDMI output, inbuilt WiFi, optional 3G WWAN, audio in / out and a 3,120mAh battery. Android 2.1 will be the OS of choice, but crucial details surrounding price and availability are sorely missing. Call us crazy, but we’ll actually be keeping an eye out for specifics on both.

Update: Well, what do you know? Seems as if this here device may in fact be a Compal NAZ-10 in disguise, and if this YouTube video is to be believed, it’ll boast 16 hours of HD video playback on a single charge and a $300 price tag. Can you say “tempting?” Thanks, Alain!

Family Nanny robot is just five years and $1,500 away from being your new best friend

While Japan’s busy preparing its robotic invasion on the moon, China’s Siasun Robot & Automation Co., Ltd. has its eyes on Planet Earth instead. Meet Family Nanny, a two-foot-seven, 55-pound robot that can talk, email, text, detect gas leaks, and run around on its two wheels for eight hours on a single two-hour charge. No, this Teletubby-like bot won’t be cooking for you, but it’ll make great chatty company for the elderly while it relays vital stats back to health monitoring systems. In case of emergencies such as a gas leak, the Family Nanny will alert the owner via text and email. Not bad for ¥10,000 ($1,465), we’d say, but we’ll remain skeptical on its chatting skills until it launches — supposedly sometime around 2015. An early video of two prototypes in action after the break.

You may have already seen the large range of gadgets — both old and new — in Hong Kong, but the small presence of KIRFs there does make things a tad less exciting. Want more? In this second part of our China tour series, we’ll be showing you around the Luohu Commercial City and the Huaqiangbei gadget heaven — don’t worry, there are still many genuine products there for you little angels.
