APSI’s WinCE-based M480 can’t quite reach Archos’ level

We can’t really knock the folks at APSI for trying to make the M480 into a product it’s not, but in all seriousness, this thing is just two curved edges away from KIRFing the Archos 5. That said, there’s no doubt this piece is trying to get all up in Archos’ grille, with an expansive 4.8-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, 30GB / 60GB of internal storage, a TV output, dual-core 400MHz OMAP2530 processor and a battery good for six to seven hours (with audio) / four to five hours (with video). There’s even support for a multitude of file formats, but the lackluster Windows CE 5.0 operating system essentially murders any chance it had at being successful. Sorry, buddy — better luck next time.

Meizu M8 on sale for $440: buy at your own risk

We don’t have to caution those familiar with the name “Meizu” that this may not be what it seems, but we’ll do it anyway for those new to the field. The outfit’s long, long, long awaited M8 appears to be on sale now for anyone with $439.99 and a remote desire to own one. However, we have seen this thing “on sale” before, but outside of a few anomalous reviews, we haven’t actually seen it ship to anyone in the US. In all honesty, we’d love nothing more than for this to be the real deal, but we’ve a sneaking suspicion that no one with half a brain is going to pull the trigger and pray for arrival. Though, the idea of surfing on top of one’s handset is surprisingly enticing, wouldn’t you agree?

[Thanks, Lance]

HD NVD is China’s home grown answer to Blu-ray, but does it have a chance?

It’s Monday, which apparently means time for yet another Blu-ray fighting Chinese high definition disc format, this time NVD. With China Blue HD barely out the door and EVD conspicuous only in its absence, HD NVD players apparently went on sale today in Wuhan, featuring 12GB of storage on a red laser disc format that — unlike the Toshiba technology backed CBHD / HD DVD variant — is not only Made in China, but Created in China, with the hope that owning their own IP can net 4-5 times the profit for its manufacturers. 80% of the world’s DVDs and players are reportedly produced in China, so now production lines can switch to NVD HD cheaply — stop us if you’ve heard this before. It’s clear that these companies are chafing under the royalties of foreign tech, but until we hear something about content support in any major way, it’s hard to believe this format war is even worth fighting. Us? We’re still holding out for VCDHD.

Exploding cellphone kills Chinese man

Here’s the thing about batteries: they store energy. Lots of it. Channeled correctly, that energy does really awesome things for us — but channeled chaotically, and… well, you know where this is going, don’t you? A man shopping in a Lenovo store in mainland China has been killed after the phone in his chest pocket exploded, severing arteries and leading to massive blood loss. The make and model of the phone and battery have yet to be identified, but seeing how this is the seventh high-profile case of an exploding phone in China in the last six years, it really gives you pause before installing that shady off-brand juice, doesn’t it?

China’s Tiangong 1 space station unveiled for tiny Taikonauts

Ok, it’s just a scale model, but what you’re looking at is the first module from China’s budding Tiangong (meaning “Heavenly Place”) space station program. It was just revealed to the surprise and delight of Engadget Chinese during a TV special celebrating the Chinese New Year. The 8 ton module is scheduled to launch by 2010 with two more modules (Tiangong 2 and Tiangong 3) to follow by 2015 after which Taikonauts will begin to stay in orbit. For now, the endeavor is meant to prepare for automated docking trials and to establish a presence in space — a move that will undoubtedly scare the hell out of hawkish members of western governments.

Video: Meizu M8 prepped for full-scale launch, IP battle with Apple

Meizu’s been on a tear since our last M8 update. Sitting atop a new 0.9.0.1 firmware release complete with working copy and paste, Outlook calendar synchronization, and a “full backup system,” the M8 is now supported by a published SDK and licensed to ride the Chinese airwaves for what looks to be a March, mainland China release. With all the passion it could muster, Meizu posted the following announcement to its English website:

Let’s bear witness together, to the great moment of MEIZU formally entering the big stage of mobile phone industry!

Currently, the M8 handset with its iPhone roots (but a WinCE core) is only available to an abiding Chinese press and die-hard Meizu fanatics — a population said to rival the intensity of Apple’s own sheeple elite. Having watched the M8 make the transition from art to part over the last few years, we’re mighty stoked at the prospective launch to say the least. And while Meizu has clearly trumped Apple’s spec sheet (not user experience) in terms of software (copy paste, background task management, video recording, and plenty more) and hardware (720 x 480 pixel display and beefier silicon), we’ll bet there’s still enough “inspiration” to get Tim Cook and Apple’s legal counsel whipped up into a frenzy of Intellectual Property defense. Latest video after the break.

Newman ManMan A1 is way too manly for us

Seriously, you just can’t find a PMP that’s any manlier than this. For starters, the phrase “man” is used three times in the product name (Newman ManMan A1), and secondly, it’s fluorescent pink in color. Clearly, Newman is aiming at those with a soft spot in their hearts for the previous generation iPod nano, and the SmartTouch UI even gives users that CoverFlow feel without all the paperwork involved in buying a legitimate device. On the plus side, this thing can handle the more exotic audio formats like OGG and FLAC, and those repulsed by the pink can opt for a blue version when it hits Chinese street vendors later this month.

Dream G2 doesn’t get the irony of ripping off an open-source OS

So we guess we gave Sciphone too much credit when we thought its G2 was running real, actual, genuine Android. “Why would anyone ape the user interface,” we thought, “when the codebase is available to whomever wants it?” Silly us! Turns out the G2’s guts have absolutely nothing to do with Android other than the fact that the UI does a commendable job of looking like the real thing, though the presence of a stylus gives credibility to its KIRF roots. The hardware (which even gets a “Google” logo on the back) actually doesn’t look that bad — and it’s loaded with some apps that you won’t find on a G1 — but we’ll hedge our bets and wait for a new HTC, thank you very much.

iPhone nano now rumored for June, Unicorn delayed again until September

Ready for more iPhone nano rumors? Good, because apparently the Chinese trade paper Economic Daily News is now reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) will be handling chip manufacturing for a low-cost device being referred to as… you guessed it: the iPhone nano. While the paper has a fairly good reputation, it is filtered through the lens of DigiTimes on our end, so as usual, take it with the required grain of salt. Still, the source is calling a June launch of the handset on the heels of an order for the components in March. The time frame is reasonable enough, and if history is any lesson here, Apple loves to intro iPhones in the Summer. Given that China has yet to see a deal for the iPhone proper, and a lower-cost entry may be perfectly tuned for vast Asian markets, the nano could gather in a whole new fold of users (and the smaller screen would be less of an issue given the need for character recognition). That theory falls in line with statements from analysts, though as always, putting too much stock in any of this speculation could be hazardous to your health. Just ask Steve Jobs.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXVII: the BlueBerry is exactly what you think

We’d heard the BlueBerry was a no-name nav unit, but the exciting world of knock-offs moves faster than a speeding bullet — and these days, it’s taking the form of a Bold. Just $164.99 buys you a phone with a QVGA display, microSD slot, and twice as many SIM slots as the real thing — oh, and about as much Exchange support as your uncle’s avocado green AT&T Slimline. We’ll take two.
