My favorite part of Tim Burton’s cult classic Mars Attacks! (besides every scene with Jack Nicholson in it) is the part where grandma’s Indian Love Call yodeling record is discovered to be the Achilles’ heel of the invaders, blowing their heads to smithereens. I always felt my head about to explode whenever that Slim Whitman commercial came on the TV too. Now you can have a constant reminder of those giant-craniumed aliens hanging on your Christmas tree.
Collectibles company Gentle Giant created this detailed, limited-edition holiday ornament based on the movie aliens, but also in tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Topps Mars Attacks trading cards which inspired Burton’s flick.
You can order the Mars Attacks! alien ornament over at Urban Collector now for $40.99(USD). It’s supposed to ship in 3 to 4 weeks, so you should have it in time for the holidays. Slim Whitman record sold separately.

Here’s a rarity for all your trekkies out there. It’s a collectible Christmas tree ornament made up to look like the transporter chamber from Star Trek (The Original Series.)
The ornament even has got tiny (though grossly inaccurate) versions of Kirk, Spock and Scotty getting ready to be beamed down to some hostile planet’s surface. It even has flashing transporter lights and transporter sound effects when you press a button.
Apparently, these were made in limited quantities by Hallmark back in 2006, but you can find them pretty readily over on eBay. This particular one is up for sale at Hooked on Ornaments for $54.95(USD), and if you want it, you’d better ask Scotty to beam you on over there right away, before Khan beats you to the punch.

I’m not particularly fond of sweets but I’m willing to make an exception for Häagen-Dazs’ Ice Moon Ice Cream Cakes that are coming this Christmas. Who knew ice cream could be done up artistically?
What you see above looks like the moon (or a sculpture of it) but it’s actually Häagen-Dazs’ Ice Moon dessert. These ice cream cakes might look simple on the outside, but they’re just brimming with flavor and delightful fillings on the inside.
The white moon consists of a pistachio biscuit base, layers of macadamia nut ice cream and meringue and a coating of raspberry ice cream. The orange moon has crunchy chocolate at the bottom, layers of nutty ice cream and salted caramel and a coating of vanilla ice cream.
The Ice Moon is a result of the efforts of Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien of Doshi Levien after the ice cream giant hired them to create the ice cream cakes for this Christmas season. I think they did a marvelous job at incorporating the jolly flavors of the holidays with the Ice Moon.

As to why they chose the moon, Doshi Levien explained:
We imagined the shape and texture of an ice cream scoop being like the moon as in a famous childhood Bollywood song. We were reminded of the stop frame movie Le Voyage dans la Lune by Georges Méliès. We were inspired by Armenian surrealist Léon Tutundjian’s relief work of 1929. We found some early examples of the ‘Bombes’ ice-cream that are near spherical.

Say what? Sony’s new handheld console already passed through the FCC and the rumor was that it had an October release date. But now it looks as if Santa has let us down this year.
Bloomberg is reporting that Kazuo Hirai says the Vita won’t launch in the US and Europe until early next year, but Japan is still getting the device before Christmas. We hope this is not the case. It’s like getting coal in our stockings several months early.
