Warner mulling limited Hobbit 48fps showings

Peter Jackson and Warner Brothers took test footage of The Hobbit to CinemaCon this year, showing off the 48fps clip to attendees in the hope that they would be bowled over by the higher frame rate. The footage was instead met with mixed reactions, with viewers believing the higher frame rate only served to make things look cheap as well as shining a light on production quality issues. According to a source at Warner speaking to Variety, the studio is planning a very limited rollout of the 48fps version of the Hobbit, so much so that it might not even hit all the major cities in the United States.

According to the source, the final version of the film looks “vastly better” than what was shown off at CinemaCon, which apparently hadn’t yet undergone post-production tweaks. Warner and Jackson may be enthusiastic about the format, but the studio is reportedly limiting the rollout of the 48fps to gauge audience reaction.

The bigger issue is that theaters aren’t quite ready for 48fps movies just yet, although a software upgrade is reportedly due to be applied in September that will enable most theaters to project the higher frame rate version of the movie. Other equipment found in cinemas, however, may need replacing entirely. Digital cinema projectors and servers are categorized into two sections: Series 1 and Series 2. Series 2 equipment will be able to apply a simple software update, while Series 1 can’t display 48fps 3D at all.

Ultimately the audience will be the deciding factor in the rollout of the 48fps version for the second and third installments of The Hobbit, but it’s still curious that Warner would limit higher frame rate showings of the first movie. Still, official details haven’t been released yet, and we’re a long way off from the film’s December 14th release date.

NC State’s new efficient pico projector raises hopes for smartphone cinema

NC State's new efficient projector

A team at North Carolina State University has developed a new liquid crystal projector that could spell the end of bulky and noisy cinema gear. Conventional tech passes unpolarized light through a filter, but the process is so inefficient that nearly 50 percent of the energy is wasted just keeping things cool. Fortunately, the Wolfpack and ImagineOptix filter claims to be 90 percent efficient — meaning that future projectors could be far sleeker. It’s also a good sign for future smartphone pico projectors, although we’re not sure how the owners of our local theater will feel when we start undercutting them with just a phone and a white wall.

Comic-Con fans go crazy over Hobbit teaser, but not the 48fps version

DNP Jackson wows ComicCon crowd with Hobbit preview, clarifies 24fps screening decision

Two different audiences and two very different screenings. After unfamiliar 48fps Hobbit footage was pretty universally panned back at Cinema-Con, Peter Jackson decided to play it safe and show Comic-Con fans the traditional low frame-rate teaser. Their response? They loved it. Which would, you’d think, give the head hobbit a clear message: his film works better without the wacky frame rate, but that’s just not how he sees it. Writing on his Facebook page, he said “I’ve always been happy to bet on myself” and the 48fps version of Hobbit is “something really special” when you watch the entire movie. In other words, he’s sticking to his orc sword, and in the meantime we’re left to wonder what would have happened if the Comic-Con crowd — who are perhaps more his kind of people than Cinema-Con goers — had been shown the tricked out footage.

4D technology coming to 200 US cinemas to help you feel and smell the action

Korean company to put 4D technology in US cinemas to help you feel, smell the action

Booming 64-track soundtrack at the cinema making you yawn? Already jaded about 4K , 3D and high frame-rates? If so, a company called CJ Group out of Korea may be able to blast you from your stupor — it’s bringing so-called 4D to nearly 200 theaters stateside. That extra ‘D’ won’t let you warp spacetime, but instead will bring your other senses into play with seats that move and thump, smells from things like flowers or gunpowder, and artificial wind, rain and lightening. All that extra stimulation could bump the freight of a seat by around eight bucks, and movie house owners will need to shell out half of the $2 million cost to retrofit each salon. But CJ Group claims it’s been hugely popular in markets like Asia and Mexico, so theaters there have quickly recouped the cost. Of course, you wouldn’t want all that strang and durm on certain films, but lots of cinematic squealers could use a good dose of extra lipstick.
