It’s Deep Space Nine O’ Clock

If this clock looks familiar it’s because it’s a sculpture of Star Trek’s Deep Space Nine. It is called the “Starfleet Machine” and it is breathtaking. It was created by Swiss watch designer L’Epée, with microengineering from the lab MB&F.

It has a lot of the same mechanisms as a wristwatch, just larger in scale. Its custom-made movement has a 40-day power reserve and a series of five mainspring barrels. The clock shows hours and minutes, double retrograde seconds and has a power reserve indicator. I wonder if it has any unique Quarks. Or Roms even.

Etch a Sketch Clock Draws the Time: It’s Sketch O’ Clock

This clock by Instructables member dodgey99 uses an Etch A Sketch to draw the time, then flips over to erase the markings and update the time. It’s the kind of clock you would expect to find in one of Doctor Who’s TARDIS rooms, along with other strange and cool stuff. However, this one is right here and now on Earth.
etch a sketch clock 620x543magnify

Its creator adapted a pre-existing body of code that used stepper motors to write random lines on an Etch A Sketch. He rewrote the program so that it would not only compose specific lines, but reset the stylus on an analog device. The motors are directed by an Arduino. Pulleys connect the knobs to a pair of overpowered stepper motors mounted on a frame of acrylic sheets. Despite being a bit slow at drawing the time, it’s still genius.

Check out the video. Great job dodgey99. I want one.

This Digital Sundial Tracks the Sun Through a Laser-Cut Cube

Sure, sundials are totally impractical in the age of precise atomic clocks, but this digital sundial cube is still the coolest. Made out of 59 plates of metal cut to match the angle of the sun at different times of the day, the Sun Cube casts a dot-matrix number to mark each hour.

Bedol Water Wall Clock Runs on High Quality H20

Most of the clocks we see hanging on the walls of homes and offices today are battery powered. There are a few that might be powered by a spring or wired into the room’s electricity. However, battery or electric power aren’t the only ways to operate a clock.

bedol water clockmagnify

A company called Bedol has a whole range of clocks that are powered by water. The latest clock from the company is a wall clock that is powered by H2O. The clock is shaped like a drop of water and has a translucent tank in the back. The water put into the clock interacts with metal plates in the tank to produce electricity.

One tank full of water will power the clock for six months to a year according to its maker. The clock then needs to be refilled and it will continue telling time. The Water Wall Clock comes in several colors, and sells for $89(USD). It will start shipping this April.

Busy Bee Wall Clock tells the time sweetly

busy-bee-wall-clockNot all clocks are created equal, and when it comes to a wall clock, you might want to settle for something as ordinary as a regular IKEA timepiece, or you could opt to fork out a decent amount of coin for something which is truly unique. Case in point, the $60 Busy Bee Wall Clock. Bees are an industrious lot, where this particular hive or swarm mentality will be able to pull through an entire colony in tough times, although such thinking might not necessarily work well in a human context. Still, there is something fascinating with bees, and this nature-inspired timepiece would definitely deserve a place in the living room of any home.

The Busy Bee Wall Clock is the creation of father and son team, Lance and L J Nybye, where they decided to merge the geometric beauty of a honeycomb alongside the human innovation of laser-cutting technology. This particularly delicate, hexagonal lattice was created using precision-cutting decorative plywood, where it is then painstakingly hand-glued in order to create a layered look, before it is endowed with a coat of cheerful, honey-yellow, water-based dye. There will be a solitary, laser-cut honeybee that rests in the 12 o’clock spot.

Giant Display Atomic Wall Clock ensures you know what time it is always

giant-atomic-clockWhen it comes to telling the time, most of us would rely on our respective smartphones to get the job done at a single glance, although there will be some of us out there who prefer the good old fashioned way of a regular clock. The thing about clocks is this – some of them might actually feature some boring design that you could end up overlooking the time itself, so why not embrace the future with the $129.95 Giant Display Atomic Wall Clock?

This is a unique wall clock which is not only oversized by itself, it is also capable of maintaining its unerring accuracy from the radio clock transmitter in Fort Collins, Colorado. The digital display itself would rely on 4.5” high numbers, which would ensure that you can easily tell the time even from up to a whopping 30′ away. Not only that, there will be 2” high numbers located right below the time, where the display would tell of the date, day, indoor and outdoor temperature. In addition, there will be a wireless outdoor thermometer which communicates with the clock from up to 330′ away, where it delivers a range of -4° F to 122° F. Fret not about Daylight Saving Time, it will be adjusted automatically, and you will be able to enjoy accurate time across the entire lower 48 United States.

Plotclock Writes the Time by Hand: Useless & Depressing Machine

We’ve seen a handful of unique analog digital clocks, but the Plotclock has to be the most unusual of the bunch. It’s also a metaphor for a dozen sad things. Made by Thingiverse member joo, Plotclock writes the time by hand, then erases what it just wrote so it can write again.

plotclock by joo 620x465magnify

Joo used an Arduino Uno, three servos and 3D printed components to make the clock. Though I strongly suspect that he also added a liter of sighs, a patch of wrinkled skin and some shredded tax forms to the device.

This clock knows life’s a waste of time. Check out joo’s page on Thingiverse for more on the futility of it all.
