We’ve gotten pretty good at clocks. The nuclear clocks that exist right now are super accurate, so what more could you ask for? Something simpler. How about a clock that’s just one, single atom? That’s exactly what researchers just figured out how to make. More »
How awesome is the Sprocket Clock? It’s just whimsical and makes a happy little ticker that looks like it was swiped straight from Willy Wonka’s factory. More »

This fascinating timepiece, dubbed the Quarderdeck Striker, is an electromechanical marvel designed and hand-built by John Hilgenberg, inventor of the air-driven Pneumachron. It is a mechanical clock at heart—just look at all the wooden gears—but its functionality is supplemented with electric servos that drive the rolling odometer time display, the power-maintaining winding mechanism (which Hilgenberg believes is the first of its kind), and the nutcracker bell striker who tolls the naval time every fifteen. Unlike almost everything else you look at the time on, remember that the good old-fashioned analogue clock above your stove or the one in the bathroom, or the digital one on your microwave is not smart enough to adjust on its own. Yes, you still have to do some things yourself around here. More »
