Gold GooPhone i5S Is An iPhone 5s Clone

Gold GooPhone i5S Is An iPhone 5s CloneThe iPhone 5s comes in three different colors, but it is not surprising to hear that Apple’s gold iPhone 5s is the best seller among the lot for obvious reasons. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, here is the GooPhone i5S that happens to arrive in gold, and needless to say, it is a clone of the iPhone 5s, which will retail for $199.99 a pop – without the need for a contract, too.

I am quite sure that GooPhone has no qualms about paying “tribute” to the gold iPhone 5s with their GooPhone i5S, as it is already up for pre-order. Heck, gold isn’t the only shade in which it will arrive in, as it will also be offered in a trio of colors that the iPhone 5s comes in. I suppose if you have missed the boat where there real deal is concerned, you might be tempted to pick up a clone, although in the long run, you will most probably regret doing so. Who are you trying to kid? The GooPhone i5S will come with a 4” display at 540×960 resolution, a 5-megapixel camera at the back with LED flash, a 2-megapixel front facing camera, a dual-core 1.GHz MediaTek MT6572 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, a 1,500 mAh battery and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice, all crammed into a chassis that weighs and measures exactly as the iPhone 5s.

Keepin’ it real fake: HTC One gets a convincing plastic clone (video)

Keepin' it real fake HTC One finally gets a convincing plastic clone

We hate to say this, but the KIRF market is often a good indicator of how popular certain devices are, hence the plentiful fake iPhones and Galaxy phones in China. (Meanwhile, MediaTek is shamelessly cashing in as it ships its SoCs to those cloning factories.) Now, we’re not saying the HTC One doesn’t have any clones, but most of those we’ve seen weren’t very convincing — they were either of different sizes or had very poor build quality. But we eventually stumbled upon a pretty good fake in Huaqiangbei.

The offending device is pictured above on the left. Externally, it bears a disgustingly strong resemblance to the real deal thanks to the same 4.7-inch screen size, the same curved back, the same micro-SIM tray, the same dual-soft-key layout and even the same metallic chamfer on the front. But if you look closer or touch it even, the tell-tale signs start to show up. See for yourself in the gallery below — the fake One is to the left or on top of the real thing.

581 Mice Made Over 25 Generations of Cloning: Dormtroopers

Japanese researchers from the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology recently announced that they have cloned one mouse a total of 581 times. They did this by making clones, then making clones out of its clones and so on for 25 generations. The Nutcracker is screwed.

The researchers, who began their experiment back in 2005, used a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer. That in itself is nothing new; in fact it’s the same technique that was used to clone the legendaryDolly the sheep. However, according to Live Science and the researchers themselves, repeated cloning was usually highly improbable, if not outright impossible, probably because successive clones had genetic defects in them. Interestingly enough, Dolly lived for only 6 years, even though domestic sheep live 10 to 12 years on average.

To counteract the defects, the Japanese used trichostatin, a histone deacetylase inhibitor or HDI. HDIs are compounds that stop certain genes from being expressed. As a result, not only is my nose bleeding because of all these advanced biology terms, the 581 mice clones (seen above) “were all fertile, they gave birth to healthy pups and lived a normal lifespan of about two years, similar to normally conceived mice.”

The leader of the research team Dr. Teruhiko Wakayama said that they hope their breakthrough could be used to make “superior quality animals” for conservation and agricultural purposes. All I know is that it is imperative that these people not get their hands on Jango Fett, or we’re all doomed.

Woman’s Assistance Needed For Neanderthal Baby Clone

neanderthal clone Woman’s Assistance Needed For Neanderthal Baby CloneThe things that you read in the news these days, now I know that what you are about to embark on is not exactly full of GHz and RAM figures, but at least there is some semblance of bio-technology involved. Apparently, Harvard Professor George Church is convicted that there is enough DNA available which can be extracted from fossils in order to achieve cloning, somewhat like how dinosaurs were created in Jurassic Park. Of course, the cells would first be grown in a lab, and on paper, it could then be implanted into a female for gestation. Having said that, Professor Church is looking for a woman who is willing to loan out her womb to birth to the clone, a Neanderthal in this aspect.

When approached on the situation, a lady replied, “I don’t know. I’m in support of the science if she’s willing to do it. I would not be that adventurous of a female, no.”

Just to get some background on Professor Church, he is a leading geneticist at the Harvard Medical School, and has also been credited in the assistance of initiating the Human Genome Project. Do you think this will find success?

JXD S5110 Handheld Game Console: The Unholy Marriage of a PSP and Android

While I’m personally holding out for the Archos GamePad, if you absolutely must have an Android 4 gaming device before the holidays, you might want to check 0ut this oddity. The Chinese made JXD 5110 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Sony PSP, but it’s all Android, all the time.

    jxd s5110 android psp

This handheld gaming system runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and supports 95% of all Android apps out of the box. It’s also got a (single) analog thumbstick, D-Pad, ABXY, Start/Select and shoulder buttons. Games are played on its 800×480 resolution, 5-inch touchscreen, and it’s also got a low-res (0.3 MP) rear camera built in. It’s powered by a an ARM Cortex A9 CPU, and has an ARM Mali400 GPU. It’s got 4GB of on-board storage, and can be expanded via a MicroSD card up with as much as 32GB of storage. Its built-in Wi-Fi supports 802.11g/b/n standards.  It’s also got an HDMI output so you can connect it to your TV.

    jxd s5110 white

Of course, the main reason to buy a handheld like this is to play emulators of older gaming systems, and the S5110 can play classic games using any of the numerous Android-based emulators out there. It even comes pre-loaded with several emulators to get you started. While it’s definitely an odd-looking system, it’s available now, and costs under $100(USD) too. You can grab one over on Amazon in either Black or White.

Nova N3 is an uncanny Samsung Galaxy S3 clone

You cannot deny that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is one high end smartphone that has done extremely well in the markets where it has appeared in, and there is the proverb which goes like this – imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The Nova N3 pays homage to the Galaxy S3 by looking more or less exactly like it, although it costs just a fraction of the price. Spotted on a Malaysian Facebook page, it retails for a mere RM599 (that would be $200 tops after conversion) for an unlocked device, accompanied by a free case as well as a screen protector. Heck, even the model number of the Nova N3 itself is misleading, carrying the i9300 number while the Galaxy S3 also shares that model number – at least for its international model.

Other hardware specifications of the Nova N3 (i9300) include a 4.7” touchscreen WVGA resolution display, sporting the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system while running on a clearly inferior 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor. The back carries an 8-megapixel camera, with a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera. You will not find LTE connectivity here, as it maxes out at just 3G. Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi and USB 2.0 connectivity rounds off the list of features in terms of connectivity.

Clearly, this is a far inferior model, carrying just 512MB RAM instead of the minimum 1GB RAM that the Galaxy S3 carries (with variants of 2GB RAM also available). Do bear in mind that the Nova N3 also lacks NFC connectivity, and you will not be able to take advantage of other cool Samsung features such as Beam.

Alt-week 10.13.12: is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.

Altweek 101312 is the Universe a simulation, cloning dinosaurs and singing mice

Are you reading this? Seriously, are you? Sure, we know you think you are, but what if you’re just a sub-feature of a complex computer program. A sprite, nothing more than the creation of software. The problem with this question is, how would you ever know? You wouldn’t, right? Well, not so fast there. Turns out, maybe there is a way to unravel the matrix (if there is one). It’ll come as no surprise, that this is one of the topics in this week’s collection of alternative stories. Think that’s all we got? Not even close. We’ll explore the truth behind cloning dinosaurs, as well a rare performance by singing mice — all before dinner. Or is it really dinner? This is alt-week.

Sony PSP Clone Runs Android 4.0, Costs Only $66

A number of Sony PSP clones have surfaced in the past. However, the new JXD S602 is in a different league because it runs Android 4.0. It comes with a 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 display and costs a mere $66. JXD S602 is available at Willgoo and packs a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 chip together with 512 MB of RAM and 4GB storage. Storage space can be extended via a microSD card slot. The device has a multitouch resistive touchscreen and a G-sensor which means that users can play motion-control games on it without any qualms.

The looks and dimensions of the device seem fairly close to those of the original Sony PSP. It features a 0.3 megapixel camera and supports WiFi. The battery that juices up the device is a 2500 mAh.

If you get bored of playing games on it, you can also load your music stash into it and get the party going since it also works as a media player. It supports MP3, OGG, FLAC audio files and a number of video formats. In $66, this doesn’t sound like a bad deal except that we can’t say anything about the perforamce of the device. Even though it packs an Android 4.0, clones often turn out to be clunky and slow.

Goophone I5 manages to KIRF the 2012 iPhone weeks in advance

Goophone I5 manages to KIRF the 2012 iPhone weeks in advance

Here’s something you still don’t see every day: a KIRF that’s unveiled before the device it’s supposed to copy. Although the 2012 iPhone may not show for weeks, the Android-based Goophone I5 is already doing a remarkable job of aping Apple’s rumored style, including that two-tone look that we’ve all seen before. Just don’t get notions that it’s the bargain of the century. Where most rumors point to a bigger screen for the real thing, the I5 is making do with a 3.5-inch screen similar to that for Goophone’s iPhone 4S imitator, the Y5. Performance isn’t likely to jolt the engineers in Cupertino out of their seats, either. Mum’s the word on whether or not the I5 will beat its inspiration to the store shelf, but we’d wager that it will cost a lot less.
