Electronic Girlfriend Coat Hugs You When Nobody Else Will

This interactive, electronic coat called the Riajyuu isn’t the first time people have attempted to give clothes that all-too-literal human factor. Remember the Like-a-Hug jacket which gave the wearer a good old squeeze every time someone ‘liked’ his or her posts on Facebook?

It’s all well and good until people stop ‘liking’ your stuff and you’re back to begging for hugs from willing strangers. I kid, but what makes the electronic girlfriend coat different is that you don’t have to do anything to earn hugs except wear it.

Electronic Girlfriend

The Riajyuu Coat was created by students from the University of Tsukuba. It’s more than just a jacket that hugs you, since it has also been programmed to whisper sweet nothings to you as you wear it.

The coat comes with a belt around its mid-section, which tightens to simulate the hug. As for the whispering part, it comes with a pair of headphones that lets its wearer listen to a high-pitch voiced woman talking and apologizing for being late – just like a real girlfriend might. Obviously a real girl does more than just hug and whisper, but keep in mind that coats do have their limitations.

Hardware engineer Hikaru Sugiura explains: “The concept of this device is everyone can get the feeling of having a girlfriend.” It’s an interesting concept, but I don’t think a coat can ever take the place of a real live girl. I think that much is obvious.

Boston Dynamics’ Petman robot successfully wears clothes (video)

Boston Dynamics' Petman robot successfully wears clothes video

Boston Dynamics has been releasing video after video of its Petman humanoid robot performing a variety of tests, but something has always been missing: clothes. No longer. The company has today released a new video that demonstrates the robot can not only wear clothes, but make you never look at a hazmat suit the same way again. As the company notes, the testing isn’t just for Petman — thanks to some DoD funding, it’s using the robot to test suits like this in hazardous conditions, with an array of sensors on the robot itself able to detect chemicals leaking through the suit. Sit down, and head on past the break to see the video for yourself.

Clothing Printer: The Future of Clothes Making?

3D printers are all the rage these days. Who would’ve thought that this concept would be turned into a reality one day? It’s developments like these that make me wonder if there are things that can be considered as truly ‘impossible’, because so far, all I’m seeing is a lot of impossibilities being realized.

Another concept that we might see in our homes one day is the Clothing Printer.

Clothing Printer1

I think its name pretty much says it all. This wall-mounted touchscreen device would print clothes for you, right in the comfort of your very own home. It would be connected to a host of clothing retailers so all you’d have to do is make your selection, tap, and wait for the machine to ‘print’ your clothes out.

The machine could even be loaded with different fabric cartridges to produce the exact clothing you’re looking for. The machine would also be able to break down clothing into its components and recycled.

So this might not be as straightforward as a 3D printer, given the complications of stitching, sizing, patterns, and the actual sewing, but hey, it could happen.

The Clothing Printer was conceptualized by industrial designer Joshua Harris as a futuristic living idea for the year 2050. If things go well, we might very well see the Clothing Printer sooner than that.

If you are about to engage in a stereotypically manly pursuit, you’re going to have to get a little dusty, or dirty, or covered in lead-based paint or something. Affectation: Interchangeable Clothing Uses Magnets to Quick-Change Your Look

A girl can never have too many clothes. That is, if she has unlimited funds and unlimited closet space. Unfortunately, that happens to be false (on both counts) for regular working girls like you and me.

But fortunately, innovations in fashion like Affectation exist. Or at least, they’re trying to, since this design is currently up for funding on Kickstarter.

Magnetic ClothingIt’s a magnetic fashion line that emphasizes the interchangeability of clothes with a few quick and easy snaps of the magnet. Articles of clothing available include ties, scarves, skirts, jackets, vests, and dress shirts.

Interested? You can head on over to the Affectation project page to check it out and view your options. A minimum pledge of $50(USD) will get women their very own multi-way magnetic scarf, while the men will receive a tie with an extra, interchangeable tail.

Official Star Trek Socks Not Part of the Official Federation Uniform

I’ve gone over and over it again in my mind. I cannot for the life of me remember what sort of socks they wore with their uniforms – or if you could even see them. All I know is that I’m pretty sure they didn’t look as good as these.

These comfy knitted cotton/poly socks available in engineering red, science blue and command gold for all you original series fans out there. Though I think I wouldn’t want to wear the red ones, in the event they have the same effect as wearing a red shirt.
