Well, this is a weird little thing that could be a very big deal. Image Comics—home of series like Invincible and The Walking Dead—just said it’s going to sell its own comics as DRM-free PDFs. You buy a digital comic straight from Image, and you download a PDF than you’re free to give to whomever you want. It’s the diametric opposite of how digital media is typically viewed.
This is one of those times when you see the news and think to yourself, Wait, they just got that? Comixology—the biggest digital comics distribution platform and the service that powers the official apps of Marvel, DC, Image, and other publishers—finally has subscriptions. It also got the digital version of graphic novels, finally, for good measure.
Because we don’t have any real life superheroes in this totally lame world of ours, we obsess over the lives of silly celebrities with beautiful cheekbones and photoshopped curves and cry over athletes wearing fresh laundry. It’s what we call fun! But if superheroes existed on Earth, all those puny humans would never make the cover of magazines ever again. We’d obsess over superheroes all the time.
Guy Finds Action Comics #1 in the Wall of His House, Family Squabble Ruins It
Posted in: Today's ChiliDavid Gonzalez is a construction worker and home remodeler. He’s also one lucky guy. He was fixing up his newest home and found an issue of the extremely rare and valuable Action Comics #1 inside a wall. This was Superman’s first appearance, so it is worth big money.
He bought the house for just $10,100, so he’s going to make a pretty decent profit on the whole deal thanks to this comic, once it sells at auction. However, there is a twist to this tale. When he went to show the comic to his aunt, she grabbed it and they fought over it briefly, the comic was torn on the back page.
That tear changed the quality rating from a 3.0 to a 1.5. That took the value down an estimated $75,000(USD). Still, it is currently listed at $137,000(USD). So he’s still doing pretty good. Great find.

We believe by 2013, you should know your keyboard exceptionally well. You probably don’t think twice as you’re typing along and most likely don’t look down at your keys throughout the day. But you might want to glance down every so often if you equip your keyboard with this set of comic-book themed keyboard stickers.
The keyboard stickers are sold by Etsy seller Killer Duck Decals and not only places cool-looking comic book stickers on your keyboard’s keys, but each image correlates to the letter it’s being stuck on. For example, the V key has an image of Venom, the B key has the Batman symbol, and L has an image of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s Leonardo. (more…)

Last month, Marvel attempted to give away over 700 digital comics for free within a short period of time, which the outcome didn’t exactly go as smooth as they had originally anticipated. It looks like the company doesn’t want to disappoint its fans and new, potential customers as they’re going to give it another try.
Those who are interested in taking Marvel up on their offer of over 700 #1 issues will have from now up until midnight ET tomorrow (4/9/13) to sign up to receive invites from the company. The invites will be used as a way to control just how many people are downloading their free comics so they don’t fumble the process of giving away their comics again. Once you completed the signup process, you’ll be able to start your download spree this Thursday. (more…)

While the world waits for the official release of Steve Jobs’ upcoming biopic starring Ashton Kutcher called jOBS, his life story will also be receiving the manga treatment in Japan in Kiss magazine, which is a publication specifically for women. Artist Mari Yamazaki has been chosen to illustrate Jobs in the officially licensed manga as she feels “sympathy for Jobs” as well as for her realistic and charming painting style. The manga will be based on the best-selling Walter Isaacson biography titled “Steve Jobs.”
A teaser image drawn by Yamazaki was released to show what kind of art style she’ll bring to Jobs image. As you can see above, we think she did a great job of Jobs’ portrait as she captured the majority of his likeness, even down to his slight face stubble. We’re curious to see what extent her talent can take the Steve Jobs manga as we’re sure he’ll be portraying many emotions throughout its story, especially towards the end of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

How do superheroes afford being, well, superheroes? It doesn’t seem too lucrative a gig given the time commitment and hazardous work conditions but yet every hero still seems to make ends meet. But if superheroes are struggling financially, they should totally look into sponsoring themselves. Iron Man by McDonald’s. Monster Hulk. Captain America’s What Can Brown Do For You? This is how sponsored superheroes would look like. More »
Marvel’s Digital Comics Unlimited finally made its way to iOS last week which makes it possible to read any of their comics that are at least 6 months old for a monthly subscription. Today, Marvel is announcing something we’re sure a number of both hardcore comic book fans and casual fans can take advantage of.
Marvel is giving away over 700 of its first-issue comics digitally through the company’s browser-based Marvel Digital Comics Shop as well as through its official mobile application, which is currently available on iOS and Android.
Considering comics tend to cost somewhere between $1.99 and $3.99, that’s quite the giveaway as the company is set to lose over $1400 just for one person downloading 700 of the issues. Since all of them will probably spark an interest in possibly buying additional copies of a particular series, Marvel could also easily recoup its losses with very little effort. (more…)
