Dark Horse plans on releasing a new Mass Effect comic series titled, Mass Effect: Foundation. The series will be written by Mac Walters, who also helped write Mass Effect 2, and was the story lead writer for Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect: Foundation is said to feature a strong female character, and that the storyline is going to go back to existing stories in the Mass Effect universe and elaborate on them more. Fans will be glad to know that many of their favorite characters will be showing up throughout the series.
Mass Effect: Foundation will be 12-issues long, with 1 issue being released every month. The comic book series will feature some tie-ins with Mass Effect 3′s upcoming DLC, Citadel. This is the longest running comic book series in the Mass Effect franchise, and it will be very character-based. Walters says that the new series, nor any of the comic series, will feel like they’ve been “tacked-on” to the Mass Effect universe. The comics will seamlessly tie in with the Mass Effect games because they didn’t want to create something and would make it feel “like we slapped the “Mass Effect” game on it.”
Also commenting on Mass Effect 3′s controversial, original ending, Walters stated that “People love the story, they love the characters, and while people had issues with the ending, many people have understood — sometimes with the help of the Extended Cut — where we were trying to go with that.” He feels that the team delivered the story that they originally intended, and that the extended cut endings were added to give fans more of what they were looking for.
This 12-issue series will give fans much more background to the hugely popular Mass Effect franchise. Given that the writer is Mac Walters, you can expect the series to stay true to the Mass Effect universe. Walters was evasive about whether or not the Mass Effect series will be coming to the PlayStation 4, but he did say they that were considering it. He also says that fans should look forward to the new Citadel DLC coming out next week, and that he, and the team, would appreciate any feedback. You can read the rest of his interview here.

Deadpool to get his own video game
Posted in: Today's ChiliIf you’re not a big fan of comic books, you may not be familiar with Marvel’s Deadpool. Deadpool has appeared in video games in the past, and was played by Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. During Comic-Con, a trailer for a new video game from Activision and Marvel surfaced bringing Deadpool his first standalone game.
Along with the announcement that Deadpool would be getting his own standalone video game, also came a trailer showing some game play tidbits. Be warned, the trailer is NSFW thanks to language. There are few details about the video game available at this point. One of the only hard details is that Nolan North will voice the character. North voiced Deadpool in the video games “Hulk Vs” and “Spider-Man: Shattered Dreams”.
The official teaser trailer shows typical combat mechanics with swordplay and guns available. This time out Deadpool also gets his trademark sick humor making him more like the Deadpool comic book fans know and love. Check out the NSFW video below.

Two different audiences and two very different screenings. After unfamiliar 48fps Hobbit footage was pretty universally panned back at Cinema-Con, Peter Jackson decided to play it safe and show Comic-Con fans the traditional low frame-rate teaser. Their response? They loved it. Which would, you’d think, give the head hobbit a clear message: his film works better without the wacky frame rate, but that’s just not how he sees it. Writing on his Facebook page, he said “I’ve always been happy to bet on myself” and the 48fps version of Hobbit is “something really special” when you watch the entire movie. In other words, he’s sticking to his orc sword, and in the meantime we’re left to wonder what would have happened if the Comic-Con crowd — who are perhaps more his kind of people than Cinema-Con goers — had been shown the tricked out footage.

Movie fans visiting Comic-Con got a chance to see the first trailer for the film The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp as Tonto. About 6000 people packed the San Diego Convention Center yesterday and were treated to a brief trailer for the film. Sadly, there seems to be no YouTube footage of the trailer to be found.
The short trailer showed Depp decked out in long hair and makeup to make him look like a Native American. In the scene, Tonto rides beneath a speeding train. The Lone Ranger in the film is being played by Armie Hammer with Helena Bonham Carter strangely paying the main female character. I’m not a huge fan of Carter’s work this side of Fight Club.
Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the movie, and the director is Gore Verbinski. Depp and Verbinski worked together on the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films and the animated film Rango. The Lone Ranger is set to release next summer.

ThinkGeek’s Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver universal remote pleases Whovians in time for Comic-Con
Posted in: Today's Chili Ever wished you too could make use of the awesome powers that lie within Dr. Matt Smith’s Mark VII Sonic Screwdriver? Well, it’s still not exactly a reality in the way of the space-bred handyman’s gadget seen on Doctor Who, but ThinkGeek and The Wand Company have you covered if an IR-packing replica universal remote sounds good enough. This BBC-licensed Mark VII remote handles up to 39 commands that are all controlled using 13 different motion gestures. Of course, if controlling the likes of TV and AV devices in an extraterrestrial fashion just isn’t your thing, there’s always ThinkGeek’s Sonic Screwdriver flashlight, right? There’s no word on price just yet, but San Diego Comic-Con attendees can try it out first-hand at the BBC America Booth (#3629) starting July 12. The Mark VII remote is set to go sale for $99 at ThinkGeek’s website on August 31st, so for now we’ll direct you to the press release after the break.
Update: Video demo added after the break.
[Thanks, Alan]

It has been about a year since Hasbro launched its own LEGO-style building sets under the name brand KRE-O. The first of those kits Hasbro offered were Transformers themed. The toy maker is back with a new line of KRE-O building sets that are officially licensed Star Trek kits, based on the J.J. Abrams-helmed Trek movie series.
There will be multiple building sets to be unveiled a preview night starting on July 11 at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The first of the sets to be unveiled is a U.S.S. Enterprise kit. Some the details on this kit are missing such as exactly how big it is and how many parts it has, but it does look pretty good. The company will also offer special “KREON” figures of Trek characters.
KREON figures are the KRE-O versions of LEGO minifigs. Three of the special figures will include Kirk, Spock, and Bones. There’s no word on when the sets will be available for purchase or how much they will cost.
For a long time if you wanted a blocky building set, Lego was the only way to go. Hasbro launched its own block building set line a year or so back called KRE-O. Some of the first building sets that were offered under the KRE-O brand were Transformers sets. KRE-O has announced that it will be officially unveiling its new licensed Star Trek sets at Comic-On on July 11.
Hasbro is giving a tease of what the building sets will be like with an early look at the KRE-O USS Enterprise building set. The building set is based on the Star Trek film sequel from Paramount pictures and is under license from CBS Consumer Products. The Enterprise building set isn’t the only set to be offered in the collection.
There’ll be a variety of vehicles along with KREON figures based on iconic Star Trek characters. KREON figures are the KRE-O versions of Lego minifigs. The three characters we know will be offered include Kirk, Spock, and Bones. Other branded building sets will also be shown off at Comic-Con starting July 11.
