From Vancouver all the way down to Mexico City, if every subway system in North America were connected, it would be quite lovely. At least on paper in this clever visualization. More »
Marvel giving away over 700 free first issue digital comics (for real, totally seriously this time)
Posted in: Today's ChiliRemember, like, not even a month ago when Marvel tried giving away over 700 first issues of its comic library in digital form on ComiXology? Apparently that didn’t work so well, with rabid fans crashing the digital comic service while attempting pull down as many issues as possible. Fret not, law-abiding citizens, as Marvel is re-introducing its offer today, albeit with a different method for snagging those free copies. Head over to the service’s special sign-up page right here and enter a bit of information ahead of tomorrow night’s expiration. Following that, you’ll receive an invite from ComiXology sometime on April 11th with instructions for how to download more comics than you’ll ever have time to read. Even better, the whole shebang hopefully won’t be bookended by download errors this time! That’s what we’d call super.
Facebook announced a phone! No, Facebook just announced Facebook Home. Facebook announced a home? No, it’s just a home screen. Hmm… what would a real Facebook home actually look like? The guys at Joy of Tech wondered just that and created a comic that shows what Facebook distilled into a home would look like. Foundation built by Winklevii, open doors because no privacy, tunnels for “friends” to come in, Instagram cameras set up at the dinner table and so much more. More »
Out of all of the Avengers, Captain America is probably my least favorite. But he might be able to win me over with some of his awesome cupcakes. You know they are the most direct way to a man’s heart.
These perfectly patriotic superhero treats were made by Hundred and Thousands Cupcakes. While I personally love the ones that are formed in the shape of Captain America’s head and winged cowl, the shields are pretty great too. Though you probably couldn’t bounce any bullets off of them.

Barnes & Noble may have saved most of the limelight today for in-app purchasing on Nook hardware, but it’s not leaving other platforms by the wayside. Its Nook 3.4 update for iOS focuses heavily on visuals, with new support for both Nook Comics as well as “HD” magazines on Retina display-equipped iPads. Likewise, there’s some spring cleaning afoot: the app offers better organization for periodicals, the option to expand book illustrations and newly animated page turns. Swing by the App Store if you’ve got enough of a toehold in Barnes & Noble’s ecosystem to use its software.

How the Internet Changed Comics
Posted in: Today's Chili Things that have changed because of the Internet: newspapers, magazines, porn, dating, shopping, television, movies, video games, lunch, cooking, cats, weather, pictures. While the world waits for the official release of Steve Jobs’ upcoming biopic starring Ashton Kutcher called jOBS, his life story will also be receiving the manga treatment in Japan in Kiss magazine, which is a publication specifically for women. Artist Mari Yamazaki has been chosen to illustrate Jobs in the officially licensed manga as she feels “sympathy for Jobs” as well as for her realistic and charming painting style. The manga will be based on the best-selling Walter Isaacson biography titled “Steve Jobs.”
A teaser image drawn by Yamazaki was released to show what kind of art style she’ll bring to Jobs image. As you can see above, we think she did a great job of Jobs’ portrait as she captured the majority of his likeness, even down to his slight face stubble. We’re curious to see what extent her talent can take the Steve Jobs manga as we’re sure he’ll be portraying many emotions throughout its story, especially towards the end of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Marvel offers over 700 free first issue digital comics, might involve great powers and responsibilities
Posted in: Today's ChiliLooking to revise the whys, hows and who’s who of the Marvel universe? Well, the movie-spinning comic book company wants to help you out, offering hundreds of first issue editions across the company’s entire history. The free digital editions will cover perennial favorites like Spider-Man, the X-Men and Avengers, as well as slightly less mainstream hits and spin-offs. The promotion kicked off yesterday and — tying in with the company’s presence at SXSW — will run until 11PM ET on Tuesday. The titles can be downloaded through either Marvel’s official comics app or its web-based digital comics shop, although it appears US readers are having more luck downloading the digital comics — we’re getting error messages when trying to access it elsewhere. Of course, if you’ve already signed up to Marvel’s Unlimited subscription service, there might not much here to pull you in, but this limited-time offer is unashamedly courting new readers and comic dabblers. If that sounds like you, start hunting down those hundreds of freebies at the source.
