The news has been largely positively received by users of the app. Amazon should certainly help this platform grow. Not everyone is happy though. Some people don’t like Amazon’s policies. However, those people need to take a deep breath. It just went down, so lets wait and see what happens.

Press release:

ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms,” said David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology. “There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

“Amazon and comiXology share a passion for reinventing reading in a digital world,” said David Naggar, Amazon Vice President, Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing. “We’ve long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers.

Will this be a new age for digital comics? We sure hope so.

Amazon Announces Acquisition Of ComiXology

Amazon Announces Acquisition Of ComiXologyIf you love getting your comics digitally instead of heading on over to the comic book store or the book shop, then perhaps comiXology is an app that you’ve heard of and probably used before. For those wondering, comiXology is basically your one-stop-shop when it comes to digital comics. The app has titles from publishers such as Marvel and DC, just to name a few, and also has a ton of smaller and indie comic books as well.

Now according to a recent announcement made by comiXology, it seems that they will be acquired by Amazon going forward. According to the CEO of comiXology, David Steinberger, “ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms. There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels.”

At this point in time it is unclear what Amazon’s plans for comiXology are and if they might integrate it into their own ecosystem in the future, but this definitely could prove to be an advantage Amazon could lord over its competitors when it comes to providing even more digital content.

It also seems that it is business as usual for comiXology for now, according to Steinberger who wrote on comiXology’s website, “ComiXology will retain its identity as an Amazon subsidiary and we’re not anywhere near done “taking comics further.” We are confident that – with Amazon by our side, who shares our desire for innovation and a relentless focus on customers – we’ve only just begun.“

Image Will Sell All Digital Comics with No DRM

Image Will Sell All Digital Comics with No DRM

Well, this is a weird little thing that could be a very big deal. Image Comics—home of series like Invincible and The Walking Dead—just said it’s going to sell its own comics as DRM-free PDFs. You buy a digital comic straight from Image, and you download a PDF than you’re free to give to whomever you want. It’s the diametric opposite of how digital media is typically viewed.

Marvel giving away over 700 free first issue digital comics (for real, totally seriously this time)

Marvel giving away over 700 free first issue digital comics for real, totally seriously this time

Remember, like, not even a month ago when Marvel tried giving away over 700 first issues of its comic library in digital form on ComiXology? Apparently that didn’t work so well, with rabid fans crashing the digital comic service while attempting pull down as many issues as possible. Fret not, law-abiding citizens, as Marvel is re-introducing its offer today, albeit with a different method for snagging those free copies. Head over to the service’s special sign-up page right here and enter a bit of information ahead of tomorrow night’s expiration. Following that, you’ll receive an invite from ComiXology sometime on April 11th with instructions for how to download more comics than you’ll ever have time to read. Even better, the whole shebang hopefully won’t be bookended by download errors this time! That’s what we’d call super.
