Compal Could Manufacture Nokia’s Alleged Windows RT Tablet

Compal Could Manufacture Nokia’s Alleged Windows RT TabletEarlier today, we brought you word concerning the alleged specifications of Nokia’s upcoming tablet that will most probably be very close to Microsoft’s Surface RT when released. Of course, the Nokia tablet has not been officially announced or confirmed in any way just yet, but this has not stopped the rumor mill from churning out even more delicious morsels for the masses to read and swallow. Just to recap, the potential Nokia Windows RT tablet might arrive with a 10.1” 1080p Full HD display with multi-touch capability, running on a quad-core 2.15GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, sport 2GB RAM and comes preloaded with Windows RT 8.1, which is also better known as Windows RT Blue.

Accessories that are said to accompany the alleged Nokia RT tablet include a cover which resembles something like what the Surface Touch delivers, a Type Cover that is alike an external keyboard among others, boasting Wireless N Cell to boot. Compal is said to be the manufacturer of choice for the alleged Nokia Windows RT tablet. Are you looking forward to this tablet? Do you think that Compal will be able to make a good job out of this, or will they botch it? Somehow, a Nokia tablet sounds exciting, and hopefully it will be able to continue the Finnish company’s renaissance.

Google branded touchscreen Chromebook due 2012 tip insiders

Google is reportedly planning a Chromebook of its own, pushing out a Google-branded touchscreen notebook to follow its Nexus-brand smartphones and tablets. The Chrome OS laptop would be made by Compal, according to the China Times, with the finished product apparently set to ship by the end of 2012.

Two new Chrome OS laptops have debuted in recent weeks, with Acer chasing the budget end of the market with its $199 A7, while Samsung’s Series 3 is only a little more expensive at $249. Although both running Google’s operating system, the two models take different approaches to the underlying hardware: the A7 sticks to Intel’s Atom chip, whereas the Series 3 uses a more frugal ARM-based processor for longer runtimes.

It’s unclear which footsteps Google might follow in with its own machine, with no hardware specifics revealed. Given the company has experience already with ARM chips in the Nexus range, however, and the more impressive battery life such processors generally allow, that would perhaps seem the more likely choice.

Google has apparently ordered around 20m units of the new, unnamed Chromebook, which it’s suggested may be a more tentative move so as to gauge interest in the platform. Alternatively, it could be to seed units with developers, as Google did initially with the Atom-based Cr-48.

Fusion Garage’s Grid 10 just won’t die, preparing comeback as Compal’s Smart Pad PBJ40

Fusion Garage's Grid 10 just won't die, outed by Taiwanese database as Compal's Smart Pad PBJ40

Usually, once a gadget gets canned it either just disappears or it ends up stumbling back under a different brand. Because, you know, some unfortunate manufacturer may have an orphaned stock to get rid of, or maybe it doesn’t want to waste the expensive tooling developed for the failed product. Either way, judging by a fresh NCC (Taiwan’s FCC, basically) filing dug up by our brethren over at Engadget Chinese, it looks like the Grid 10 from the now-defunct Fusion Garage may well crawl out of its grave just like that.

While there’s still the “Grid 10” branding on the back of the tablet, the two-day-old NCC document recognizes Compal as the company brand (presumably it was Fusion Garage’s OEM partner for this), and there’s also a new but rather mundane name for the device: “Smart Pad,” model “PBJ40.” Sadly, there’s not much else to look at here apart from the vanilla Android Froyo or Gingerbread (instead of Grid OS) sighting in the pics, as well as the Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n WiFi mention.

So the question is: what will Compal do with this Smart Pad? Resurrect Fusion Garage in Taiwan? Unlikely (though Chandra does like to surprise people). Offload the lot to Taiwanese carriers or stores? We’ll bet our money on that.
