Speck Offers MacBook Great Looks, More Stability

SpeckSeeThru.jpg
There are so many plain white MacBooks at Starbucks. Don’t you want yours to stand out a little? If so, check out the two new lines of colorful coverings from Speck.

The Speck SeeThru is a hardshell case that comes in clear, red, and pink. The Speck SeeThru Satin has a soft texture and a frosted look, and comes in black, purple, and red. Both add extra stability to your MacBook with the addition of integrated rubber feet.

Both lines offer unhindered access to all ports, are easy to remove, and list for $49.95 each.

Travel Case Keeps iMacs Secure

CaseCruzer.jpg

Yes, you can travel easily with a 27-inch iMac, thanks to the just-announced CaseCruzer carrying case made for that model. CaseCruzer specializes in indestructible padded cases for a variety of computers. This iMac model holds the LCD screen in an upright position, and is both airtight and waterproof. If you’re traveling for a trade show and you need a large iMac for demonstration, you’ll be safe even from airport baggage handlers with this one.

While the 27-inch iMac case is large (34.5 by 13 by 30 inches), it’s no chore to maneuver, thanks to corner wheels. It also includes two durable cushioned rubber end handles for easy lifting. The case weighs 36.85 pounds when empty and has two pad-lockable latches for greater security. When you’re on the site, check out CaseCruzer’s other indestructible bags. I like the NiteCruzer, a combination laptop case and overnight bag.

Hands On: Case Logic SLR Suspension System Backpack

DSC_1579.JPG

I’ve been trekking around with the Case Logic SLR Suspension System backpack ($134.99 direct) for about a month now, and it’s a great choice for photographers. It features a nifty “SLR Suspension System,” an elastic strap that grips and suspends your SLR, as opposed to having its body or lens rest against other shelving within the bag.  It seems a little gimmicky, but it definitely holds your camera securely.

More pictures and details on this bag, after the jump.

Hands On: Case Logic Soft-sided Messenger Bag Keeps your Laptop Cozy

CaseLogic-3.jpg

The Case Logic Soft-sided Messeger Bag ($49.95 direct, for laptops up to 16 inches) is the coziest case I’ve come across. With its softly padded polyester exterior, it looks and feels like a sleeping bag or a down jacket; you could use it as a pillow, if you stuffed it with a t-shirt or two instead of a laptop.

I did use it as a laptop case, though, and it does the job. This bag is obviously not as protective as a hard-sided case, but it makes a nice-looking, light day bag; a separate sleeve of the same material is also included for extra padding for your laptop.

The messenger has one large exterior pocket and two interior compartments; you won’t fit a huge amount of extras into this bag, but that keeps it extra-portable. I love the bright orange with gray of the bag that I used, but it also comes in brown-blue and gray-pink colorways. And it comes with–really–a 25-year warranty.

Case Logic also offers a netbook sleeve that’s covered in gray cable knit, just like your dad’s sweater; check it out after the jump.

Be.ez Wraps Netbooks in Style

BeezLArobe.jpgRecognizing that those crazy netbooks aren’t going away, French accessory maker Be.ez (it’s pronounced “be easy”) is expanding its line of LA robe netbook sleeves for 11.6-inch netbooks. That means that owners of ASUS EeePC 1101 HA and Acer 751H netbooks can now get the perfect fit. The 11.6-inch sleeves come in two color combinations: black-and-white and “red kiss.”

The LA robe sleeves are made with low-resilience polyurethane memory foam, so they offer protection from bumps and scratches. The new 11.6-inch sleeves retail for $22.99. You can see the whole Be.ez line at Amazon.

Imation Hard Drive Cuts the Cord

ImationProWXUSB.jpgWe’re heading for a completely wireless world, and Imation is helping it
along with the Imation Pro WX USB hard drive. This 1.5TB drive comes
with a USB dongle that plugs into your computer; the drive
itself can be placed anywhere within a 30-foot range.

Going wireless doesn’t mean sacrificing speed, as this drive offers a 15MB-per-second data-transfer rate. It works with both Windows and Macs, and comes with Memeo Instant Backup software. That means you can set it up, place it far away from your computer so you don’t hear it working, and know that all your data is constantly being backed up without you having to think about it.

The Imation Pro WX includes a built-in stand so you can set it horizontally or upright, and features a one-touch backup button. It’s not the cheapest model around at $449.99 (list), but wireless convenience is worth paying for.

Hands-On: Tamrac Velocity Sling Bag Holds 3 of Anything

TamracVelocity9X_1740_1743_1755.jpg
Tamrac Velocity sling bags let you carry a digital SLR camera with lens and a couple extra lenses. Choose the most useful model in the line, the Velocity 9x ($90 street), and you’ve also got the perfect insulated bag for carrying three bottles to that BYO restaurant. The Velocity 9x bag measures 13x11x7 inches (HWD). Others in the line range from camera-only plus a couple accessories bag (Velocity 6x) on up through two DSLR cameras with lenses (Velocity 10x, $100) that is the size of most backpacks. The Velocity 6x ($45) or Velocity 7x ($60) would be good for carrying a video camera even if that’s not its intent. Both the Velocity 8x and Velocity 9x do the three lenses (plus one camera body) trick. All the Velocity bags ride on your back, then slide around front for easy access. All have three compartments formed by padded movable dividers and spacers so you can stack accessories or lenses; a hidden waist strap; and a bunch of front and top compartments for cellphones, MP3 players, memory cards, and keys.

Hands-On: Lowepro Versapack 200 AW Photo Backpack

LoweProversapack200AWweb.jpg
The Lowepro Versapack 200 AW may be the most versatile combination yet of backpack and camera bag for photo enthusiasts who do other things with their lives. The removable divider flap between the bottom photo compartment and the open upper compartment comes out to allow this $100 (street) bag to be a full-depth backpack. Think of it like the folding rear seats on some sedans that merge the trunk and back seat into a single bigger storage area. Same idea here, but only two color choices: black or teal.

TimBurton.jpg

This one’s for you, Tim Burton fans: GelaSkins, maker of attractive skin covers for all types of gadgets, has announced four new designs created by dark and quirky director Tim Burton. The artwork was all taken from Burton’s book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories, and features the characters Oyster Boy, Stain Boy, Toxic Boy, and the Pin Cushion Queen.

The site features Tim Burton designs for 15- and 15.4-inch laptops, as well as iPhones. You can create a skin for any supported device, however, by selecting a design as a favorite and then clicking the “Create Your Own” link.

If you’re looking for something a little more grown-up, consider the three Bettie Page images that were also just added to the site and bring some retro hotness to your favorite gadget.

Razer Dials it Back with Abyssus Gaming Mouse

RazerAbyssus.jpg

Maybe it’s the recession; maybe it’s the realization that not every gamer has an unlimited amount of money to spend on gear. Whatever the case, preeminent gaming peripheral company Razer has introduced the Abyssus mouse, a simplified version of its high-end products with a more reachable price tag.

The Abyssus was designed to give gamers the tools they need, but not the extras. It offers a 3500-dpi infrared sensor, on-the-fly sensitivity adjustments, and three programmable buttons. This mouse can be used by either left- or right-handed users and glides on Ultraslick Teflon feet. A seven-foot cord lets you sit as far from your PC as you’d like. All this will cost you $49.99, which isn’t bad for a premium gaming mouse.

“Less is more,” said Robert “Razerguy” Krakoff, the president of Razer. “We’ve taken our ambidextrous three-button mouse design and loaded it with our industry-leading technology without the added cost of too many bells and whistles.”
