Microsoft: 1M Xbox Live Users Downloaded Netflix App

Despite the absence of Sony content with the Xbox-Netflix partnership, one million Xbox Live Gold members have downloaded the Netflix application since its November launch, Microsoft announced Thursday.

In total, the Xbox Live community has watched 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV episodes over the past three months.

The deal allows people with subscriptions to Xbox Live and Netflix to access via the Xbox the 12,000 streaming movies and TV shows from Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” library. Sony, which produces the Xbox rival PlayStation 3, however, is reportedly blocking Xbox users’ access to movies produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Nintendo DS and Wii Break Sales Records

Nintendo_Characters.jpg

The Nintendo Wii sold over 10 million units in the U.S. in 2008, the first game console ever to break that barrier, according to new NPD data relayed by the News Market.

The report said that the Nintendo Wii racked up 10.17 million sales in 2008, followed closely by the company’s sister portable console, the Nintendo DS, with 9.95 million. Both consoles broke the previous record set in 2007, when the Nintendo DS sold 8.52 million units.

As a result, the Nintendo Wii represented 55 percent of all home console sales in 2008, while the DS nailed 72 percent of all portable system sales, according to the report.

Son Assaults Mom With Taco After Xbox Privileges Revoked

Plenty of time and money has been spent on studies attempting to determine whether or not video games make kids violent. Perhaps some of both ought to be invested in the adverse effects of Mexican food on kids brains. After having his Xbox unplugged, an Orlando teenager assaulted him mother…with a taco.

Dena Moir unplugged her son’s console after he refused to pause the game for dinner. Zachary, 19, pushed her, called her a “bad name,” and eventually threw the meat-filled Mexican dish in her face.

“He went ahead and hit me with the taco and I got taco all over my shirt and kitchen,” Dena told the local Fox affiliate. “I’ve threatened to call police before. But anyway this time, I thought he went too far so I called police and he’s in jail now.”

Dena later told authorities that she would press charges. No word on whether the tacos were beef, chicken, or fish.

CES 2009 Video: Capcoms Planet Hollywood Party

This party no doubt annoyed a lot of people who were actually staying at Planet Hollywood. Capcom threw part of the event outside, in the hotel’s courtyard–complete with an open bar and tons of food. And attendees could play the new Resident Evil 5 on a really big screen. When I say “really big screen,” I mean a projected video that encompassed 6 floors on the side of Planet Hollywood and had huge speakers blasting the game’s audio.

Check out our video to get an idea of how awesome it was (that is, for everyone not paying for a room in the hotel).

Guiness Book Releasing Second Annual Gamers Edition

guinnessbookgaming09.jpgI’m not much a gamer myself, but I have to say, King of Kong was one of the most entertaining documentaries I’ve seen in the last few years. It portrayed the drama and excitement of professional gaming, rarely seen by the outside world. For those who find that such sentiments are just a distraction from raw lists of numbers, however, “The Guinness Book of World Records” has announced the release of its second annual “Gamer’s Edition.”

The book comes out on February 4th, with a $21.95 cover price. And it does feature more than lists of numbers. While details are scarce about the forthcoming edition, last year’s had reviews of games, interviews with pro, and gaming tips and cheats.

Personally, I hope they keep some of the regular “Guinness” oddball stats intact. World’s fattest gamer, anyone?

Sharpen Your Math Skills with Nintendo DS Personal Trainer

professor-kageyama-lifestyl.jpg

Quick, what’s 236 divided by 5? OK, math can be hard. According to a study conducted for Nintendo, 1 in 5 (out of 400) children surveyed believe they’re more likely to grow up to become a professional athlete, actor, or singer than to get As and Bs in math. More than one-third of those surveyed say that math is their most difficult subject, and nearly one-third of kids have very negative feelings about math. Eighteen percent of those surveyed called math “boring” and 13 percent called it “torture.”

Nintendo has come up with a fun solution to get kids interested and confident in their math skills. “Personal Trainer: Math” is a new software for Nintendo DS that both entertains and improves basic math abilities.
Personal Trainer: Math is the second in Nintendo’s Personal Trainer series; the first was Personal Trainer: Cooking.

CES 2009: Audiovox Bringing Playstation 2 to a Car Near You

audiovoxps2.gif

Audiovox this week announced a partnership with Sony that will bring the Japanese electronics manufacturer’s popular PlayStation 2 console to cars everywhere.

Audiovox plans three models, which so far lack an official product name, price, or ship date. It appears that the company will offer these as aftermarket options to car manufacturers, and possibly to retail stores as well.

The flagship model looks a bit like standard in-car DVD player — and it should, because that’s essentially what it is. Inside the unit, however, are the guts of a PlayStation 2 player. It also incorporates a full-color 16:9 10-inch screen, 16-channel FM modulator, two game controllers, headphones, and a DVD remote.

CES 2009: Wiimote Maracas and Soprano Sax

wiimotemaracasax.gif

I think Chinese companies may have officially jumped the shark, regarding Wiimote adapters. Swords, OK. Tennis Rackets, sure. Hey, I can even get behind Wiimote crossbows. But a company called Top-Union, based inf Shenzhen, has gone a bit too far.

On display in the CES International Hall were these two items, which appear to be Wiimote maracas and a Wiimote soprano sax. The latter has apparently been released in eager anticipation of the as-yet-unconfirmed Nintendo Wii Kenny G game.

The kids are gonna go nuts over that one.

Mousepad! Boobs! Butts! That is all.

P.S. Is that Patrick Dempsey in the middle?
