e3.jpg

Ahhhh! E3’s next week, which means, of course, that I need to start packing soon for my trip to LA. It also means that we’re knee-deep in video game rumors. We waded through all of the information swirling around next week’s show (well, Natalie the intern did, actually) and picked out a few of the our hopes for next week’s show.

Sony: New PSP. This may well be the big news of the show. Speculation is bubbling up that Sony will release the PSP Go!, the successor to its perennial favorite portable gaming console will drop the UMD in favor of downloadable media and 16GB of built-in memory.Oh, and will God of War 3 get a release date?

Razer Introduces Sphex Mousing Skin

RazerSphex.jpg

PC gamers know that Razer makes high-performance mice that let them pivot and shoot faster, and ultra-slick surfaces for friction-free mousing. Now the company has introduced a new kind of surface, the Sphex desktop skin.

The Sphex differs from other surfaces because you can attach it and remove it from any surface, so it’s portable yet still high-quality. The skin measures 320 by 230 mm and has an adhesive bottom to grip to your desk. It’s ultra-thin, yet still offers excellent tracking quality.

The Sphex is currently available for pre-order for $14.99, and will ship June 1st. It promises a serious performance boost for not much money.

PC Gaming Doing Better Than Most in the Recession

The Jon Peddie Research Institute announced Tuesday that PC gaming is holding strong during these troubling economic times. JPR, a multimedia consulting firm, found that although spending has slowed on PC gaming hardware, as in other areas of gaming, it has slowed less. Data charting spending the PC-game hardware market in 2008 and 2009 shows a downward trend, from $20.07 billion to $18.65 billion.

So why is JPR forecasting a near $5 billion increase in spending by 2010? The firm foresees a trend of people staying home more, going out less to movies, putting a hold on vacation plans, and turning toward more economical forms of entertainment. You can buy a game for $50, for example, and get hundreds of hours of amusement–and a computer doubles as a way not only to play games but also to watch TV and create video.

The NPD Group
, a leader in marketing research for the entertainment industry, agrees. When it asked Americans if they had gone to the movies or played video games in the past six months: 63% answered they had played a video game and only 53% claimed to have seen a movie.

Queen Elizabeth Has a Shiny New Wii

queen elizabeth ii.jpgWhat to get for the monarch who has everything? How about the latest new game console from Nintendo? Not good enough. How about the latest new Nintendo game console covered in gold?

That’s what THQ got for Queen Elizabeth.

The game developer also tossed in a copy of its latest release, Big Family Games, so her highness can get her golf, tennis, ladder golf, lawn darts, horseshoes, and bocce on in style. Word on the street–or, rather, in the palace–is that the Queen got a bit addicted to the console when Prince William got a Wii last Christmas. We assume she knows all the words to “We Are the Champions.”

Microsoft Magic Wii-like Wand Patent Revealed

Back in November of 2007, Microsoft filed for a patent on a device known as the “Magic Wand.” The patent, which was filed roughly a year after the release of Nintendo’s gesture-based Wii console, was just recently made public.

The abstract description of Microsoft’s device is as follows,

The claimed subject matter relates to an architecture that can facilitate rich interaction with and/or management of environmental components included in an environment. The architecture can exist in whole or in part in a housing that can resemble a wand or similar object. The architecture can utilize one or more sensor from a collection of sensors to determine an orientation or gesture in connection with the wand, and can further issue an instruction to update a state of an environmental component based upon the orientation. In addition, the architecture can include an advisor component to provide contextual and/or comprehensive guidance in an intuitive manner.

There are plenty of theories surrounding the proposed application for such a device, including a Wiimote-like controller previous referred to as Newton. The patent includes the names of a number of Microsoft bigwigs, including Zune/Xbox-daddy J Ballard and Andy Wilson, one of the heads of Microsoft’s Surface project.

Activision Gearing up for DJ Hero, Band Hero, and Guitar Hero 5

djherocontroller.jpg

A perennial complaint among musicians goes something like this: “Why waste your time perfecting Guitar Hero, when you can learn a real musical instrument?” The impending release of Activision’s DJ Hero begs the question of whether that game will provoke a similar sort of reaction among DJs.

Like Guitar Hero before it, DJ doesn’t really make an effort to teach actual music skills. Instead it adopts the design of its predecessor, with three colored buttons attached to a mock turntable.

Activision is also working on Guitar Hero 5 and an all-ages Band Hero title. All three are slated for a fall release.

Harmonix: Play John Lennons Guitar for $99 in Rock Band

Beatles Rock Band Lennon guitar.JPG

Behold John Lennon’s Rickenbacker 325, at least as envisioned by Harmonix. The controller will be sold for $99 alongside The Beatles: Rock Band, which goes on sale on Sept. 9.

If you’re interested, Harmonix is now accepting preorders at TheBeatlesRockBand.com. Fans who preorder will receive “exclusive news and access to exclusive game elements,” according to the company.

For those who want every last semblance of the Beatles experience,
Harmonix is also selling the Gretsch Duo Jet guitar used by George
Harrison. At this point, it appears that the controllers will be sold separately, and not as part of the $249.99 Special Edition package that features the bass, drums and microphone.

The Special Edition set includes the Hofner bass used by Paul McCartney, and the Ludwig-branded drum set inspired by Ringo Starr. There’s also a mic, of course, but that doesn’t seem to be inspired by any band member in particular. Reportedly, the game will allow up to three mics, enabling three-part harmonies.

Apple Reportedly Looking to Buy EA. Hmmmmm.

Here’s a fun little rumor that may likely get lost in all of this morning’s Apple-buying-Twitter talk. Apparently in some circles there’s also a good deal of “chatter” that the Cupertino-based company is also looking to buy gaming giant Electronic Arts.

Not a whole lot of information on this one, and honestly, even with the company’s new found focus on casual gaming for the iPhone and the hiring of a couple of old Xbox executives, such a rumor seems to grasping during a relatively slow news week. So for the time being, move along, there’s nothing to see here.
