Since nearly all new Vaio computers are using a touch display, Sony thought that it was time to re-think how people would want to use their laptops. The idea behind the Vaio Flip is that with touch, it would be nice to have a “real laptop” that also offers a “flat” mode that is more touch-centric, maybe closer to a table computer than a classic tablet. Finally, having a “viewing” mode where the the display is upright, but without the keyboard in front of it could be desirable for presentations or simply for entertainment.

At IFA 2013, Sony introduces the Vaio Tap 11, a tablet-PC that is super-thin (0.39”) and comes with a detachable keyboard-cover. This is a beautiful design, and it turns out that this is NOT a slow computer. Despite its small internal volume, the Vaio Tap 11 can use the latest Intel Core processor – up to Core i7, says Sony. This is quite a feat for a device that would look like a 10” Android tablet at first glance.

One of the great things about all-in-one desktop computers, like the iMac for example, would be how little desk space it takes up. However if you were to throw in peripherals such as external hard drives, it could take up more desk space than you’d like, which is why mLogic’s external hard drive solution could be for you especially if you own an iMac or Apple Display. The company has recently debuted a lineup of mBack Zero-Footprint external hard drives that have been designed for the iMac and Apple Display in mind.

The hard drives themselves have come in either a white or aluminum finish that should match your iMac or Apple Display, and best of all it will mount on the stand of your display, hiding it from view while not cluttering your desk at all. Given that the USB ports are on the back of the iMac, we reckon it makes a great fit. Available in 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB models, the hard drives will connect via USB 3.0 and is bus-powered. It will come with a built-in cable and is formatted for Mac computers meaning that it is Time Machine ready out of the box. It is priced at $100, $150, and $260 for the 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models respectively and can be purchased from mLogic’s website.

Sometime near the middle of this year, we did manage to spend some hands-on time with the Acer Aspire R7, but it seems that said hybrid device is due for a refresh. Acer has just announced a new version of the Aspire R7, where it will sport the version number R7-572, while featuring Windows 8.1 installed right out of the box to get you started, apart from a slew of new additions. Acer claims that this new version of the 15.6”Aspire R7 will be accompanied by an Acer Active Pen, a stylus that is said to work well with the touchscreen gesture controls that can be found in Windows 8.1.

This active stylus will rely on electromagnetic induction technology where it can respond to different degrees of pressure sensitivity just like an actual pen, resulting in it delivering a greater range of pen strokes and more natural writing. Not only that, the new Acer Aspire R7 will be accompanied by a set of Acer Touch Tools apps which will include MemoryBinder, a photo app that Acer claims allows users to add paint brush effects to images, while letting them arrange photos in order for one to convey a story in an unbroken manner.

Expect the new Acer Aspire R7 to roll out in Europe, the Middle East and Africa sometime before the end of this year with a starting price point of 999 Euros. Hopefully the full hardware list will be revealed in due time, too. [Press Release]
