Windows 8.1 RTM Screenshots Leaked

Windows 8.1 RTM Screenshots Leaked

Last we heard, Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8.1 update is said to have been finalized and will begin rolling out on the 17th of October, and for those who did not bother with the Windows 8.1 Consumer Preview and were wondering how the operating system might look like post-update, a bunch of screenshots have made their way online, giving us an idea of what to expect. The leak comes courtesy of Win8China, who in the past has been pretty accurate about their product leaks, so we expect that these screenshots could be more or less the real deal.

The screenshots shows off the default start screen, lock screen, along with desktop screen backgrounds, so if you were wondering what sort of changes you might be able to expect from the update, hopefully these screenshots will be able to clue you in. Windows 8.1 is said to be a pretty major update for the operating system and will introduce a host of new features and changes, such as the bringing back of the Start button amongst other things. In any case additional screenshots can be found at Win8China’s page or the source link below, but what do you guys think of the update so far? Is Microsoft on the right track?

Apple Rumored To Release OS X 10.8.5 Update Today

Apple Rumored To Release OS X 10.8.5 Update Today

Its no secret that Apple is going to release a new OS X update soon, we just don’t know exactly when it intends to do that. For over a couple of months now the OS X 10.8.5 update has been in beta phase, meaning that it was only rolled out to registered developers. As of now, Apple has seeded seven betas of the upcoming update, the latest coming out on July 31st. Rumor has it that the company has started shipping a pre-release build to select partners, which might mean that the public release of OS X 10.8.5 will take place today.

The folks at AppleInsider claim to have heard from “people familiar with the software” that the pre-release version carries build number “12F35.” It is said that this update is recommended for all Mountain Lion users. Since its only an incremental update, there aren’t any new features in OS X 10.8.5. However, it is said to fix an issue that may prevent Mail from displaying messages, improve AFP file transfer performance over 802.11ac Wi-Fi, improve Xsan reliability and resolve an issue that might prevent a screensaver from starting automatically. The pre-release build is apparently 286MB in size, partners are reportedly supplied the build hours before Apple is to release the update for the public. If this is indeed the case, Apple may very well push out OS X 10.8.5 later today. We’ll keep an eye out and will let you know if that happens.

Google Brings Together The Past And The Present On The Web

Google Brings Together The Past And The Present On The WebGoogle, the most used search engine by the masses today, certainly has their fair share of products that have benefited mankind, and here we are with Google sharing a historic moment with the masses using the Web. This particular Web experience is the result of the work by Google’s friends Organic and Unit9, where it is known as “March on Washington” and was specially done up for the National Park Foundation. “March on Washington” is an online experience unlike never before, where you are invited to relive that particular moment in time as you listen in to an original recording of Dr. King’s words which is accompanied by immersive photography smack from the event itself.

It allows you to record yourself reciting Dr. King’s words, where you can also choose to play back other participants’ recordings as a crowd-sourced narrative of voices, in order to hear the timeless message repeated back from folks regardless of where they are from. What are some of the other future projects that you would like to see being shared with the masses? Certainly assassinations should not be part of it, despite being historical in nature, but rather, celebrations of joy and happiness ought to play a big role.

Microsoft May Have Forced Ballmer’s Retirement Due To Surface RT Debacle

Microsoft May Have Forced Ballmers Retirement Due To Surface RT Debacle

Late last week, Microsoft announced its current CEO, Steve Ballmer, would be retiring from his role within the next 12 months. At the time, Microsoft didn’t give any details in regards to why exactly Ballmer was making his exit from the company, instead taking the time to show their appreciation for his previous work to help shape the company into what it is today. But one analyst is arguing that Ballmer may have been pushed out of his CEO role due exceptionally poor sales of the Microsoft Surface RT. (more…)

AWS Server Issues Affect Instagram, Vine, Airbnb And IFTTT

AWS Server Issues Affect Instagram, Vine, Airbnb And IFTTTIt seems that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has run into a bunch of issues, which would mean folks who wanted to spend the rest of today checking things out on Instagram or Vine in a leisurely manner would have had a rather rocky road to walk. Both services were apparently offline for more than an hour, and Instagram was the first between the two to acknowledge its issues on Twitter, while Vine was not too far behind – in less than an hour later, Vine too, reported that they had run into a brick wall themselves.

You could say that the “first flood” of tweets complaining about both services’ downtime begun at approximately 4 p.m. Eastern time, and needless to say, it only increased in intensity as users realized that they were unable to share photos of their food or carefully directed short videos (or some really crazy videos, it doesn’t matter). It seems that other services which also rely on AWS, namely Netflix, IFTTT, Heroku and Airbnb too, have run into similar outage issues earlier today. Instagram and Vine have already gotten their act together since, and it seems that the Netflix outage, too, is on its way to recovery, but IFTTT’s website still remains out of commission. Apparently, Amazon’s north Virginia data center seemed to be the cause of the problem, but it seems that these issues have been locked down and have been worked out already.

US Open To Feature Social Media Wall

US Open To Feature Social Media WallThe U.S. Open is all set to begin in an explosive manner this coming August 26th, where you will find that as a tennis fan, things have never been better. Sure, I am quite sure that Roger Federer is going to find it extremely difficult and challenging in adding to his impressive list of Majors considering how his steamrolling days are just about behind him for quite some time already, not to mention the rest of the field having caught up and surpassing him in different ways already. Still, I would like to root for him because he’s been an all round nice guy, just like the Good Guy Greg meme. Having said that, it is not going to be about tennis balls and hot dogs, as the US Open will also boast of a giant social media wall which measures an impressive 50 feet in width and 8 feet in height.

This social media wall will be able to depict content pulled from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, where it shows off the tweets, posts and photos in real-time. Fans are able to share their “voice” and be a collective “reporter” by using the official hashtag #usopen. Not only that, this particular wall will show what is trending so that attendees will be able to keep up to date with the latest news and upcoming events – at least the tech savvy ones out there. I do wonder whether this social media wall, should it be effective in its nature, be implemented in other Majors?

    Windows 8.1 Development Finalized

Windows 8.1 Development FinalizedWe more or less know that Development of Windows 8.1 is already complete, which further confirms previous speculations as to when Microsoft’s primary operating system would be updated – the time frame does seem to be in time for the coming holidays this winter (at least for those of us who happen to live in the northern hemisphere). The “release to manufacturing” name (RTM) does seem to have a sense of finality, it is far from being the complete and polished article – I believe that very rarely is a software released perfect without any more need for improvements or fixes. Chances are development on the Windows 8 platform will continue moving forward until its general availability that is slated for October 17th happens.

What will happen between now and then? Microsoft is said to roll out a bunch of “quick fix engineering” (QFE) updates to the manufacturers as they continue to work on the next bunch of updates. How about Windows RT 8.1, you ask? Microsoft does seem to be hard at work on a second generation Surface tablet which will hopefully perform a whole lot better in the market than the older Windows RT tablet, and Windows Phone 8.1 also seems to be on track to hit the markets sometime in the first half of next year.
