Google Maps Introduces Tardis Easter Egg

Google Maps Introduces Tardis Easter EggAre you a huge fan of the Doctor Who series? If you have answered in the affirmative, you will be pleased as punch to hear that the folks over at Google have not yet lost their sense of humor, and hopefully, it will remain that way for a long, long time. In fact, the latest Easter Egg that the Internet search giant has introduced to the world can be found in their Google Maps services. It seems that Google Maps decided that a heady mix of technology and science fiction would do the trick this time around. Whenever you navigate to this location on the London Map, it will show off a U.K. police box in Street View, with the option to double click the arrows that are located in front of the structure.

Upon doing so, you will be taken into a Tardis. Once you are inside (imagine that, without even having to be in the movie set of Doctor Who, now how about that?), you are able to drool over an entire 360-degree view of an incredibly well rendered version of the Tardis’ interior which was brought to public consciousness thanks to the Doctor Who series. Don’t you wish that you have a personal Tardis of your own?

Amazon Silk Browser RevampedJust like how you would get sick and tired of wearing the same old clothes of a uniform color each day, so too, do software and apps need a revamp from time to time to keep things looking fresh and perky always. Amazon has finally rolled out its first major update for the Silk browser since September 2012, and a visual revamp would be what gets your attention right from the get go. After obtaining and studying feedback from Kindle Fire owners, the entire Amazon Silk browser’s user interface has been redesigned, making it easier and more intuitive to use.

Surface Pro Workstation Setup Boasts A Quartet Of Monitors

Surface Pro Workstation Setup Boasts A Quartet Of MonitorsMicrosoft’s foray into the tablet market the second time around (remember the tablet PC that did not take off all those years ago?) is not exactly a happy experience, as both the Surface RT and the Surface Pro has yet to achieve the kind of crazy sales figures which would make an Apple executive proud. Still, this does not mean that Microsoft has given up the good fight, having rolled out firmware updates for the Surface RT and Surface Pro as recently as this week. For those of you who do not think much of the Surface Pro, perhaps seeing what a certain Keith Elder has done with his might change your mind.

Elder happens to be a Director of Software Engineering at Quicken Loans during the day, and his project concerning the Surface Pro is something worth checking out – this rather diminutive tablet has been hooked up to a quartet of generous sized PC monitors, by hooking up the Surface Pro’s USB 3.0 port to a $95 Plugable USB 3.0 docking station. This is followed up by connecting the right number of Plugable UGA-3000 video adapters to the docking station, and you have a four monitor workstation which is ready and raring to go, with the Surface Pro being the “brains” behind everything. This might take some work, and it definitely is no replacement for a gaming machine, but the possibility of it as a casual email/Facebook machine is very real.

New York Times Web Site Is Still Offline

New York Times Web Site Is Still OfflineJust earlier this morning, we did bring you word that Microsoft’s Outlook service has experienced an outage, and it seems that Microsoft is not the only one suffering from such a malady, as the New York Times’ website has been offline, and still is offline as at press time. Just what is going on today? When approached, a representative for the New York Times’s owner has confirmed that the site is down without divulging any details as to why it is so, while a tweet from one of the blogs has pointed the blame finger squarely at the all encompassing “technical problems” reason – or should we say, excuse?

One ought to take note that the New York Times Co. happens to be the owner of the Boston Globe right now, but the Boston Globe’s website remains up and running without any issues. Certainly this outage proves that while the Internet is a fantastic place for print media to take a leap into the paperless future, there still is some room left for traditional newspapers. After all, I just love the smell of a freshly printed paper, not to mention you can always use these old papers to clean your glass doors and windows after scrunching them up nice and good. Hopefully the folks handling the New York Times’ website will be able to get things up and running quickly, otherwise heads might roll. Image courtesy of CNET.

    Microsoft Outlook Outage Reported

Microsoft Outlook Outage ReportedIf you are an online service provider and your service happens to undergo an outage, it would definitely make many people unhappy. Of course, if your service happens to be widely used but not indispensable, then it would irritate a wide percentage of folks, but it is not really a life or death issue. However, when you have a service like Outlook from Microsoft and it happens to be down, then you’re in a quite a bit of a spot, no? Microsoft is already well aware of the situation and they have noted on the Updates segment in their status page, “We’re working on the problem and will provide an update by August 14 11:00 AM. Thank you for your patience.”

I guess if Outlook is having issues, that would also mean services such as Hotmail, Messenger and SkyDrive will not be up and running without glitches, either. What do you think could have caused this? Hardware issues or is it some sort of software compromise somewhere? One thing is for sure though, it would be best if Microsoft’s engineers are able to figure out just what is happening at the moment and sort everything out as soon as possible so that the world can carry on as it used to be.

Hamlet Filtered At Library For Containing “Violent Content”

Hamlet Filtered At Library For Containing “Violent Content”Do you think that computers are getting way too smart for us these days? After all, a man who was at the the British Library recently tried to access the library’s Wi-Fi network, but he was denied access when he tried to check out an online version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet for one very basic reason – the text within contained “violent content”, or at least according to the filter. Author Mark Forsyth was busy trying to write his book in the library, where he then felt a need to look up a line from the Bard’s famous play, but hit a roadblock.

According to British Library, the fault did not lie with the library itself, but rather, the blame was shifted to a newly installed Wi-Fi service from a third-party provider. A security expert weighed in on the incident, touting that it showed off the “dysfunction” of internet filters. Of course, this is most probably an oversight, and according to spokesperson for the British Library, Hamlet had been made accessible ever since the complaint was lodged, and the new upgraded service comes with a web filter to ensure that inappropriate content such as smut and gambling sites cannot be viewed or accessed. A double edged sword, this is.
