    How Machines Think

When people talk about artificial intelligence, it’s tempting to think that it means computers can think (a little) like humans. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it turns out that’s not quite the case.

    Gmail Gets New Compose Screen

Gmail Gets New Compose ScreenIt was not too long ago when we brought you word that Gmail would be on the receiving end of a full-screen option where composing an email is concerned. Now that this particular full screen compose window is now available, Google has decided that everyone should jump aboard the new compose window, bidding adieu to the old compose. If you have yet to experience the new compose window, do not worry or fret over it too much, since it ought to roll out in the coming few days.

Just what kind of features or new additions will greet you as you start to type emails to those on your contact list? For starters, it will open drafts as a minimizable window, allowing you to compose multiple drafts simultaneously, all the while enabling you to keep a keen eye out on incoming email, you busy bee you! It will also include support for inline images among others. For those who have a preference for a full-screen compose experience, you are then able to click on the expand button that is located in the top right of the new compose window so that the full-screen switch will happen. Here’s hoping that the new compose screen will not end up as compost!

Geek Squad Members Sued For Allegedly Posting Nude Photos Of Customer Online

Geek Squad Members Sued For Allegedly Posting Nude Photos Of Customer OnlineLegal tangles can be quite a mess, just ask Samsung and Apple, and you will be able to see just how the rabbit hole does not have any end. At least not in sight for now. It so happens that a lady from Tuscaloosa woman has filed a lawsuit against Best Buy, touting that members of the Geek Squad have posted her nude photos online after they worked with her computer. The plaintiff happens to be a University of Alabama art student, and she has filed an invasion of privacy lawsuit against Best Buy, with her lawyer Steven Heninger of Birmingham touting that she has been left devastated and humiliated by the events.

In the seven-page civil lawsuit, it allegedly claims that back in August 2011, the plaintiff, who did work at the Best Buy on McFarland Avenue back then, sent her computer to the store and paid in full so that her hard drive problem could be fixed. However, in May this year, she was notified by a colleague that her nude photos had already made their way online, which means one of the possible ways of that happening was for a Geek Squad employee to take those photos from her computer in 2011 before uploading them to the Internet as well as linking them on Pirate Bay. Well, it just goes to show what are some of the stuff you should keep on your computer, and what should remain private – even if the computer’s spoiled or is in a mess.

Over 40% Of Americans Log Into Web Version Of Facebook Each Day

Over 40% Of Americans Log Into Web Version Of Facebook Each DayJust how popular is Facebook? Well, the social network giant, fresh from picking up Mobile Technologies under their growing list of companies acquired, has just unveiled the latest batch of US user metrics, where statistics point out that over 128 million users actually log into the web version of Facebook each day. That amounts to more than 40% of all Americans, now how about that?

On the mobile front, the number would have dropped a wee bit to 101 million in comparison, which accounts for nearly 33%, but it is not worrying at all since it still shows off just how popular the mobile version of Facebook is. Something tells me that most of the folks who log into their mobile version of Facebook would also log into the web version whenever they are at home or at work. Of course, the main target of these metrics would be advertisers so that they have a better idea on how to engage with their intended audience. Other than that, Facebook has every intention of moving away from the “monthly active users” metric, citing that to be an “old way of looking at the media world.”

Since you have owned a smartphone and/or tablet, do you still log into the web version of Facebook?

Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard Aims To Make You Comfortable When Typing

Connectivity is crucial these days, whether you’re a professional or a student, you’ll need to use a computer to accomplish various tasks. People who have desk jobs, like most of us, or even those who just spend a lot of time working away on their computers often complain of being uncomfortable in their workplaces. According to a survey conducted by Microsoft, 85 percent of workers in the U.S. have these complaints, globally the figure is said to be at 89 percent. In a bid to solve this major problem and to make people more productive, Microsoft today announced its Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop. In this post we’ll focus on the Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard and how it hopes to keep you productive while you’re typing.

Microsoft touts the “modern” and ergonomic design of this keyboard, claiming that it “sets the standard” for support and comfort. The design helps the user keep their hands and arms in a relaxed position, thus allowing them to work for longer periods of time without getting uncomfortable or developing soreness. The keyboard has a cushioned palm rest that prevents repetitive stress injuries and inflammation, the split layout aids in keeping wrists and palms in a relaxed position. Furthermore, the domed shape of this keyboard helps reduce and correct excessive wrist pronation which can cause pain. Keys are laid out in a natural arc which follows the curve of the fingertips, allowing for a more natural way of typing. Microsoft’s Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard has a MSRP of $80.95, more information regarding purchase can be obtained from your local distributor.

HTC Likely To Move Away From Windows Phone 8

HTC Likely To Move Away From Windows Phone 8

With the longstanding duopoly of iOS and Android, a number of mobile platforms constantly wage battle for the third position in the global market. In some markets BlackBerry is ahead of Windows Phone 8, in others its the other way around. Many analysts believe that Windows Phone 8 is actually in a much better position as opposed to BlackBerry, even with its new BB10 platform. Nokia is one of the biggest manufacturers of WP8 devices, its Lumia range has produced decent hits. On the other hand there’s HTC which is yet to see immense success with any one of its WP8 device. Rumor has it that HTC is likely to move away altogether from Microsoft’s mobile platform.

Before Microsoft and Nokia signed a billion dollar deal making Windows Phone the default OS on Nokia smartphones, HTC was the biggest vendor of Windows Phone device. Now it accounts for roughly 5 percent of all WP8 devices, as opposed to Nokia which has the lion’s share of 80 percent, followed closely by Samsung in second place. Digitimes cites sources based in Taiwan who claim that HTC might move away from WP8 and focus even more than it is already doing on development of Android devices. One reason cited for this change is HTC’s desire to gain more share in the global smartphone market, and given Android’s popularity, the move seems perfectly logical. Does his mean HTC will stop making WP devices altogether? Presumably not, the company hasn’t dropped any such hint as yet.

Bra Sizes Of Female Detroit Cops Emailed By Accident To Officers

Bra Sizes Of Female Detroit Cops Emailed By Accident To OfficersNow this is definitely an embarrassing situation for female members of the Detroit police, as their bra cup sizes have been emailed to the other officers by accident. Just how the heck did such personal information become available? The answer is simple – a bullet proof vest. After all, the bullet proof vest that is worn by a man looks nearly the same as that of a woman’s on the outside, although the inside is very much different since it has been specially contoured to fit her curves. It is rather unfortunate then, that when a handful of female officers provided information such as their height, weight and bra cup sizes to the Detroit Police Department so that they are able to receive fitting bullet proof vests, it is rather unfortunate that a “clerical error” led to such a situation.

Assistant Chief James White, said, “On the third page, the females were listed. Unfortunately and embarrassingly, the cup sizes of the females were listed on that third page, and it was really just a clerical error.” Commander Dwayne Love was tasked to inform the officers that their bullet proof vests were ready to be collected, so in the forwarded email to the commanders who in turn forwarded it to the supervisors, and subsequently had it forwarded it to the rest of the officers, carried the weight, height and bra cup sizes of the women named in the attached Excel spreadsheet.

    Dalai Lama’s Chinese Site Hacked

Dalai Lama’s Chinese Site HackedI guess that anyone with an online presence in the form of a website or web page is fair target of hackers, although your blog would be left mostly untouched if all you did with it was to show off pictures of your lunch, your pet cat lazing around the home, as well as selfies. If you were a high profile person who somehow divides opinion right down the middle, then the chances of someone defacing or hacking into your website is a whole lot higher, as the Dalai Lama found out recently with his Chinese site hacked. Apparently, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of His Holiness the Dalai Lama site will come with an embedded iframe which will redirect Chinese visitors to a Java exploit, where said exploit will open up a backdoor payload, according to Kaskpersky Lab’s Kurt Baumgartner.

This is better known as a watering hole attack, where it is normally used by hackers to work their way into a site which has an extremely high probability level to be visited by a select group of users. While the site remains legitimate to most security software, visiting the compromised website could result in malicious content being installed on your machine which will then allow hackers safe passage to your personal information. It would be best to avoid this particular site at the moment to prevent any unwanted data theft.
