Office 2011 For Mac Update Adds New Office 365 Features

Office 2011 For Mac Update Adds New Office 365 Features

Today Microsoft rolled out a new update of Office 2011 for Mac. The new update brings a slew of bug fixes, stability and performance improvements. It also adds a handful of new integrated features of Office 365. Bumping the version number up to 14.3.4, the update weighs in at 113MB and can be downloaded through Microsoft’s web page or via the Office 2011 AutoUpdate utility. Before this update can be installed, it is mandatory that the user has Service Pack 1 of Office 2011 installed. The AutoUpdate utility will show two available updates if SP1 hasn’t already been installed.

Office 2011 for Mac license is available as a subscription now after this update, bringing it at par with Office 2013 for Windows. While offering more compatibility with Office 365 features, the update also brings deeper Microsoft SkyDrive and SharePoint integration. Office 2011 for Mac is now available as a $99 per year or $10 per year subscription, with the ability to install it on five separate Mac machines. The full list of changes and bug fixes is available at the update’s web page, from where it can be downloaded as well, for free.

Syria And The Internet Divorces

Syria And The Internet DivorcesSyria is not exactly the shining example of being a stable country at this point in time, not to mention the fact that the Syrian electronic army recently hacked 11 Twitter accounts belonging to the Guardian. Having said that, it seems that Syria’s Internet connection to the rest of the world has been interrupted, at least this is what can be gathered according to Google data as well as other global Internet companies. Google’s Transparency Report pages pointed out that traffic to Google services pages from the country which has been knee deep in a civil war which has dragged on for more than a couple of years already, stopped abruptly before 3pm EDT (19h00 GMT), and there were no additional activity for approximately four hours after the initial drop-off happened.

Christine Chen, Google’s senior manager for free expression, said, “We’ve seen this twice before. This happened in Syria last November and in Egypt during the Arab Spring.” It is more or less an impossible task to know the reason behind such a disruption, unless someone or a party claims responsibility, but hopefully, Syrians will be able to get back on track – at least their online lives, sooner rather than later.

Microsoft Has Plans For Office Web Apps Suite

Microsoft Has Plans For Office Web Apps SuiteA few months ago, Microsoft threw in their fair share of new features to their free suite of online Office Web Apps, where among them include the ability to add images that were discovered on the Internet quickly within a document. Well, fast forward to today, and we have Microsoft outlining a fair number of its future plans for upcoming Office Web Apps updates.

A post discovered on the Office blog pointed to Microsoft mentioning that one of their biggest new features that is in the pipeline at this point in time would be real time co-authoring of documents. Right now, you can have at least two people collaborating on documents in Office Web Apps simultaneously, although changes to those documents can only been viewed when the apps have been refreshed. Microsoft stated, “We’ll introduce real time co-authoring in the Office Web Apps so that all file authors will automatically see presence and edits from others as they happen without needing to refresh. This is a subtle change, but a great enhancement to enable even richer collaboration.”

Google Maps To Get New Interface

Google Maps To Get New InterfaceThe folks over at Google do seem to be looking forward into the future at all times, and this time around, word has it that they have been working on a spanking new interface for Google Maps. This particular update will see the removal of the sidebar, and it will show off everything right on top of the full-screen map. Not only that, another one of the new features will also enable you to restrict local search results to places that have been recommended by top reviews, or to folks who are within your Google+ circles.

It is said that the upcoming interface will be a more immersive one, where in all probability, it will place nice across majority of the mobile devices out there in the market. Google has decided to shift their focus from navigational elements, buttons and sidebars to the map itself. After all, isn’t the whole point of a map being easy to read, so that you can get from Point A to Point B relatively quickly without any hassle? Google has also kindly thrown in more updates to the map colors, icons, text styles. No idea on when the new user interface will be showed off in a demonstration, but with Google I/O happening next week, things would definitely heat up there. There is another image right after the jump for additional context, just in case the curious George in you wakes up and wants to have a look.

Microsoft Having “Meaningful Discussions” On Bringing Back Windows Start Button

Microsoft Having Meaningful Discussions On Bringing Back Windows Start Button

A lot of traditional Windows users were not impressed by the fact that Windows 8 required them to do an additional unnecessary step to get to the desktop. Furthermore, Microsoft removed the iconic Start button that generations have come to love. It was quite clear from the get go that this OS was developed while keeping tablets and touchscreen computers in mind, but not everyone is going to use Windows 8 on those devices. Recently there’s been chatter indicating that Microsoft might be contemplating on bringing back the Start button, whereas code has already been found in a Windows 8.1 leaked build which points to an option that might let users boot directly to desktop.

Julie Larson-Green, head of Windows Engineering, confirmed today in a conference that Microsoft is having “meaningful discussions” on the prospect of adding older features of the outdated Windows version to future updates of Windows 8. These features include, but are not limited to the Start button. However Julie also says that the company believes fully in the start screen and the “model of having live tiles and access to everything” in a single glance. It is a bit early to say whether the features will be seen in Windows Blue, which was confirmed earlier today, and its public preview release date was also revealed. The next Windows 8 update is slated for release later this year.

The time frame that Julie has given fits in comfortable with that of Microsoft’s Build 2013 conference, which is being held in the last week of June. As far as the public preview for Windows Blue RT is concerned, Microsoft has said that they don’t have any commented with regards to the public preview of the company’s trimmed down update for tablets. HTC R7 And R12 Windows RT Blue Tablets Launch Reportedly In October

It was rumored back in December 2012 that HTC was contemplating entering the Windows RT tablet market. Back then it was said that the Taiwanese manufacturer was working on a 7 inch and a 12 inch tablet which would run on Microsoft’s tablet compatible Windows OS. Today alleged specifics of both tablets have received, but since its just one source, its best to read ahead keeping in mind that these are merely rumors for now.

HTC is reportedly going to release two tablets, the HTC R7 and the HTC R12, the monikers correspond to the respective screen sizes. The R7 is expected to tout a 7-inch full HD display, with a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM breathing underneath it. There might be a 13 megapixel camera on the back and 16GB of internal storage, with the added option of increasing storage through microSD cards. The smaller of the two tablets is expected not to have NFC, HDMI or DLNA. A variant with LTE/HSPA+ compatibility is expected though, alongside a Wi-Fi only one with the customary Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS connectivity features. As far as the HTC R12 is concerned, it will reportedly boast a 12-inch 2048×1536 display and will have the same internal specifications as the R7, but with more connectivity options such as NFC and HDMI.

Details about battery capacity or device dimensions are not available right now. It is rumored that HTC R7 and R12 tablets will be launched on the 13th of October. The tentative release date sits just around the corner from holiday shopping season and is comfortably ahead of the rumored Windows RT Blue release time frame.
