Windows 8.1 Build 9385 Images Leaked

Windows 8.1 Build 9385 Images LeakedA few days ago, we discovered the leaked references of the Windows 8.1 preview, and it seems that there was more than meets the eye as screenshots of Windows 8.1 build 9385 have already surfaced on the Internet today. This would drop additional hints at the possibility of the build being leaked out in the days ahead. Apart from the desktop image, there was also a screenshot of what looks like a user being in the middle of the ISO downloading process.

Windows 8.1 has been given the codename “Blue”, which has been bandied about in recent weeks. In the previous few weeks, builds of Windows 8.1 have already made its way out in intervals of five: 9364, 9369, and 9374. Obviously, those with a soft spot for mathematics would figure out that build 9385 would break that pattern, although should it be similar to the previous leaks, it will most likely include a slew of bug fixes in addition to more control panel options.

Gigabyte U2142 Convertible Ultrabook Revealed

Gigabyte U2142 Convertible Ultrabook RevealedEarlier this year at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada, we managed to spot the Gigabyte U2142, and after a few months, it is finally available to the masses. The Gigabyte U2142 is a convertible Ultrabook that comes in a 11.6” form factor, where it boasts of a swiveling hinge that does bring back memories of Lenovo’s swiveling hinge for some of its ThinkPad models. This enables it to function as a tablet when the situation calls for it, while you can always use it as a standard issue Ultrabook, too. Running on the Windows 8 operating system, the Gigabyte U2142 tips the scales at just 1.39 kg for the m-SSD model, and is slightly heavier at 1.49kg if it carries a hard drive within, all crammed into a chassis that is 2cm thick when closed.

Powered by a third generation Intel Core processor with a host of connectivity ports, the Gigabyte U2142 convertible Ultrabook can double up as a tablet, too. The display itself sports a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels alongside multi-touch capability, an expandable memory of up to 16GB, and a choice between a 256m SATA SSD and a 1TB HDD. Pricing starts from €949 onwards if you are interested in picking one up.

Dell Delivers 4G LTE Wireless Connectivity For Windows 8 Tablet

Dell Delivers 4G LTE Wireless Connectivity For Windows 8 TabletDell is venturing into unchartered territory at the moment, at least from their point of view, by throwing in 4G LTE wireless connectivity for their Windows 8-powered tablet. The tablet in question that we are referring to here would be the Dell XPS 10, where it will run on the RT version of Windows 8. Dell’s statement read, “Today, we’re introducing an AT&T 4G LTE mobile broadband version for US customers on Dell.com, providing professionals with the same fast, reliable, high-speed internet connection as on their smartphones for connectivity anytime, anywhere.”

Hmmm, hopefully it will be able to live up to its reputation. After all, the Dell XPS 10 is somewhat an oddball tablet even in the midst of top-tier PC manufacturers, where it mostly boils down to the RT version of Windows 8 running underneath the hood. Not only that, the Dell XPS 10 is powered by a Qualcomm ARM processor instead of NVIDIA’s version. Well, if you want an LTE-totin’ Dell XPS 10, you would need to fork out an additional $100 for it, hitting $749 in the process, where it will be accompanied by 64GB of internal memory. In comparison, the 64GB iPad 4 with LTE would cost you $829 a pop.

Microsoft Bing Offers Launched, Bing Deals Put To Bed

Microsoft Bing Offers Launched, Bing Deals Put To BedHave you ever given group deal buying sites like Groupon and LivingSocial a go? Well, those were pretty hot for a moment in time, but you can more or less say that interest in these two along with their clones have somewhat dropped by some degrees over the past few months. Still, this has not prevented Microsoft from launching Bing Offers, which is a totally new local deals aggregator that will target the US market. Something tells me that if it takes off in the US market in a big way, surely Microsoft would want to look into introducing it in other markets around the world.

In the the new, and obviously, the old must go, which is why with the launch of Bing Offers, we would bid goodbye to an old friend which debuted in 2011, known as Bing Deals. A Microsoft spokesperson shared that Bing Deals underwent “a number of iterations” over the years, and you can more or less say that Bing Offers is the next version of Bing Deals.

Facebook Purchases Mobile App Builder Parse

Facebook Purchases Mobile App Builder ParseFacebook did pick up some companies along the way to obtain new technology that they can use to further their social network cause, and just late last year, there was a rumor concerning a possible Facebook buyout of WhatsApp, although nothing came out of it, with the latest potential suitor of WhatsApp being touted to be Google for a cool $1 billion. Having said that, here is something more concrete – Facebook has just purchased mobile app builder Parse, where Parse specializes in powering mobile applications, which would clearly augment Facebook’s intention to roll out a more tablet- and smartphone-friendly social network down the road. The future, after all, lies in mobile devices.

So far, there has been no disclosure on how much money exchanged hands in this acquisition deal, although sources closed to the ground mentioned an $85 million buyout for the San Francisco-based Parse. Facebook posted, “By making Parse a part of the Facebook platform, we want to enable developers to rapidly build apps that span mobile platforms and devices.”

Leap Motion 3D Gesture Controller Launched Delayed To July 22

Leap Motion 3D Gesture Controller Launched Delayed To July 22Earlier in the week, we read on how Leap Motion and Google have come together to deliver a far out Google Earth experience. The thing is, you will need a Leap Motion sensor to go through a pseudo-Superman like experience, but the sad part about all of this is, an unexpected delay has cropped up. It seems that the Leap Motion sensor which would pave the way for such interactivity has been delayed until July 22nd later this year.

Chief Executive Michael Buckwald mentioned, “As a company, in good conscience, we couldn’t sacrifice the testing process. We have to push back the date…. We really believe in meeting our own expectations and I think a little additional testing is necessary to get there.”

Personally, I agree with this, as it makes sense to take more time to ensure that the product that is pushed out would not be gimped in any way, or rather, is as perfect as humanly possible, instead of being rushed just to meet a rollout date. Patience might be wearing thin though, as the Leap Motion 3D gesture controller was meant to ship sometime earlier this year before its official release date was pushed to May 13th afterwards.

Samsung ATIV Brand Expands With ATIV Book 5 And ATIV Book 6

Samsung ATIV Brand Expands With ATIV Book 5 And ATIV Book 6Love is in the air, at least on Valentine’s Day this year when we tried very hard to kindle a relationship with the Samsung ATIV S, a Windows Phone 8-powered smartphone. The thing is, that was a smartphone, and it seems that Samsung has far greater plans for the ATIV brand name other than to sell Windows Phone 8 devices. The day has come then, as Samsung has announced that they will expand the ATIV brand to include its entire range of Windows-powered PCs.

Having said that, a couple of Samsung ATIV Book models has been announced, namely the Samsung ATIV Book 5 and the Samsung ATIV Book 6, with the former representing the next generation of Samsung Ultrabooks, while the latter comes in the form of a high-powered notebook that delivers a high level of performance without compromising on efficiency. Other than that, Samsung also has a new technology released that they call SideSync, where it will allow users to switch from working on their PC to their Android-based Samsung smartphone seamlessly through the simple action of hooking up the devices in question via USB. The Samsung ATIV Book 5 and ATIV Book 6 will retail for $899.99 and $1199.99, respectively.

Toshiba Uses Anime Characters For Its Dynabook Instruction Manuals

Toshiba Uses Anime Characters For Its Dynabook Instruction Manuals

When you purchase a new product, we’re sure you’re the kind of person who doesn’t even look twice at an instruction manual unless you completely stump yourself while setting up your new purchase. Instruction manuals aren’t meant to be flashy or interesting, instead foregoing any sort of entertainment value in lieu of giving the reader the information they need. But Toshiba is releasing a new manual that features anime characters in order to help the new owner of its dynabook series of notebook computers setting up their machine in order to get the most out of it.

The illustrated instruction manual features Para-chan, who looks like an anthropomorphic seal, and Mana-chan, who we would assume is a student based on her school uniform. The guide doesn’t replace the more traditional instruction manual, but instead is being included with the company’s newest dynabook laptops as an introductory guide. Mana-chan plays the role of the teacher as she guides Para-chan through setting up its dynabook. We have a feeling this will never make its way out of Japan, but it’s nice to know Toshiba is helping otakus learn more about their laptop in a way they would digest the information best: through reading manga.
