Asus Zenbook UX31A Review

Asus Zenbook UX31A Review

We were first introduced to the Asus Zenbook UX31 back in late 2011 and last year, Asus introduced a new wave of Zenbooks, one of which was an improved version of the UX31, the Asus Zenbook UX31A, which is now equipped with an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, a higher-resolution screen and now comes with Windows 8.

We were already pretty impressed with the original Zenbook UX31, so we certainly have been looking forward to checking out the same ultrabook design with some seriously improved internals. The UX31A is extremely light at 3.08lbs, has a 50Whr battery, and it also happens to have an Intel Core i7 processor inside of it. Could this be the ultrabook that will raise the bar for others to try to beat? There’s only one way to find out, so let’s get down to our review, shall we? (more…)

BitTorrent Sync Alpha Unlimited File Sharing For All

BitTorrent Sync (version alpha) is now available for all to use (for free). Prior to this a pre-alpha version was circulating, but the access was limited to 20,000 users. If you are not familiar with BitTorrent Sync, it is a software that allows private file-sharing between your computers, and it is of course based on BitTorrent’s distributed technology. (more…)

Western Digital Ships 5mm Thin Drives

Western Digital Ships 5mm Thin DrivesWhen it comes to storage and backup drives, Western Digital would be a name that many people are familiar with, although some might have run into unpleasant experiences in the past where their backup hard drive just died even before making it past the 1 year mark, which is rather unfortunate. Still, we are not here to start an Aunt Agony channel for failed hard drives, but rather, talk about Western Digital’s latest solid state hybrid drives and hard drives that rely on a single edge connector to save space, and hence, reducing its thickness to a mere 5mm thick.

You can say that the all new WD Blue and WD Black 2.5-inch drives were specially manufactured with notebooks and Ultrabooks in mind, where being a mere 5mm thick, it would translate to sleeker notebook and Ultrabook designs down the road. The thing is, will the other components and parts of a notebook or Ultrabook be able to achieve such levels of miniaturization? This slimmer design is touted to lower weight by up to 36% compared to the traditional model, not to mention boasting of reduced noise during operations. The 500GB WD Blue 5mm will retail for $89 a pop, while versions of the WD Black 5mm SSHD are said to ship to PC manufacturers, leaving us in the dark concerning its capacity and costs.

Lenovo Helix Begins To Ship

Lenovo Helix Begins To ShipThe Lenovo ThinkPad Helix is certainly a thing of beauty, right from the moment that we laid eyes on it at CES earlier this year in Las Vegas. Of course, since then, at the end of last month, we did bring you word that the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix is being prepared for delivery, and since we are approaching the tail end of April now, it seems that students over at a university in New Jersey will soon start to enjoy the wonders of the ThinkPad Helix.

Apparently, this university has furnished its students with the ThinkPad Helix hybrid Ultrabook after performing an evaluation against pure Ultrabooks and tablet devices. The Seton Hall University hopes to deploy approximately 2,000 (!) units of the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, where the first batch should arrive in a few weeks’ time. Other folks do seem to have already received them though, which is why this Ultrabook hybrid could very have begun to ship to the masses. Definitely a beauty for the ages, this.

Acer Teases “A Unique Notebook” In Star Trek Trailer Video

If you’re in the market for a new notebook, perhaps Acer might have something for you that as far as design is concerned, might not disappoint. The Taiwanese company released a teaser video in which the notebook can be seen in a tie-in with upcoming movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness where the device can be seen with a sliding-hinge screen. The video refers to the notebook as “A Unique Notebook” and states that the device will be revealed in its entirety come 3rd of May, which is a couple of weeks before the movie is released.

Unfortunately apart from the tease, not much else is known about this “unique notebook”, apart from the fact that the Windows 8 brand can be seen at the end of the trailer, suggesting that we could be looking at some sort of hybrid device which is part laptop and part tablet, a feature starting to become common these days. In any case we guess we will know more on the 3rd of May, but in the meantime if you’re curious, check it out in the teaser video above.
