Intel Update For USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Increase Power Output As Well

Intel Update For USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Increase Power Output As WellIntel has announced that they will be introducing an update to their USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface, where this spanking new update will not only increase the total available throughput via the interface, but will also bump up the power output as well. In a nutshell, this would allow you to transfer data to your USB 3.0 devices at a faster rate in addition to having the potential of powering a bunch of other peripherals connected to it, sans a dedicated power cord. Now we’re talking!

Having said that, USB 3.0 compatible devices have been around for some time already – can you believe it that we are already in the fourth year or so? Somehow it does feel to me that not everyone is jumping aboard the USB 3.0 bandwagon as fast as I would like, but that is just my personal opinion. The new USB 3.0 SuperSpeed specifications is said to be able to boost up the power delivery to 100 watts, which is a ten-fold increase from the current 10 watts, and this is achieved via delivering a maximum of 20 volts at 5 amps. It would be interesting to see how the peripherals world cope with this new quantum leap.

New Nexus 7 Tablet Google I/O Release Rumored

New Nexus 7 Tablet Google I/O Release Rumored

Google will be making quite a few announcements at the I/O conference. The company will unveil Android’s next major platform update, version 5.0 or Key Lime Pie. It is also expected make hardware announcements, though recent rumors suggest that it won’t be unveiling Nexus 5 or Motorola X. Rather it will be announcing a Nexus 4 with 32GB storage and 4G LTE. Now it is being speculated that the company will unveil a revamped Nexus 7 tablet at its event.

The new Nexus 7 tablet will reportedly be released in July. It is rumored to have a full HD display, a slimmer bezel design, Wi-Fi and cellular capabilities. Some rumors also suggest that Google will swap the Nexus 7′s existing NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. Revamped Nexus 7 is expected to retain its current price point of $199. Like before, the device will be manufactured by Asus. The slight changes in design will make this tablet thinner and lighter than before. This would give it an extra edge in the market which is literally overflowing with 7-inch tablets from a wide variety of manufacturers, a thin and light footprint coupled with Android OS will set the Nexus 7 apart beautifully.

Acer Iconia W3 Windows 8 Tablet Purported Images Leaked

Microsoft is expected to make a lot of announcements at the Build Conference, which takes place in the last week of June. The company will reveal more information about the upcoming software updates, though quite a lot is already known courtesy of leaked builds. They’ll also be making hardware related announcements. Microsoft CFO Peter Klein has already confirmed that the company is working with OEMs on smaller Windows RT/Windows 8 devices. These purported leaked images of an Acer Iconia W3 tablet lead us to believe that Acer will be the first manufacturer to release a smaller device based on the aforementioned platform.

This 8-inch tablet is supposedly powered by a 1.8Ghz Intel Atom Z2760 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. Though the package isn’t as powerful as other tablets in the market, it will reportedly be enough to run all Windows applications correctly. No specific information is available right now about the display. The tablet is expected to have dual cameras for taking photos and video conferencing. An optional keyboard may also be available for the Acer Iconia W3, it will ship with a pocket that protects the tablet against bumps and also doubles as a stand. No clear details regarding pricing have been revealed, but the device is expected to be available in September.

Windows 8.1 Preview And Windows Server 2012 R2 References Discovered In Leaked Build

Windows 8.1 Preview And Windows Server 2012 R2 References Discovered In Leaked Build

Yesterday we reported that yet another Windows 8 build had been leaked on the internet. While it did not bring any substantial changes, the new Kiosk mode was discovered in this build. That’s not all though. References of Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2 have been unearthed in the code of this leaked build’s system files. The references mean it is highly likely that Windows Server 2012 and Windows RT users will also be included in the upcoming upgrade cycle.

Microsoft is expected to make a number of announcements relating to its latest software at the Build developer conference taking place in June. That’s not all, Microsoft is also expected to make some hardware related announcements as well, particularly about its 7 or 8-inch devices. Code from leaked Windows 8 build 9374 also points to Windows RT 8.1, this leads us to believe that Microsoft might launch Public Preview of Windows RT upgrade for tablets such as the Surface RT. In the past three weeks, three Windows 8 builds have been leaked. Perhaps more references to Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows Server 2012 R2 will be uncovered in any subsequent leaked builds.

Leap Motion And Google Earth Are Now In Cahoots

Leap Motion And Google Earth Are Now In Cahoots Recently, we were talking about how Leap Motion and HP worked together in order to integrate Leap Motion’s technology in its upcoming devices. Doing their bit to honor Earth Day, both Google and Leap Motion have just announced (and it is not even April Fool’s!) that there is an update to Google Earth available today, where this update would be able to detect input from the Leap Motion Controller. Basically, you are now able to “reach in” and “grab” the world within your display using Leap Motion, not to mention flying around at will.

Of course, this particular freedom to fly around does come with a catch. The only folks who will be able to make use of hand gestures to fly around Google Earth on Earth Day will be limited to approximately 10,000 or so members of Leap Motion’s developer program. As for the rest of the world, they will just have to be patient and wait until May as the pre-orders will ship then, retailing for $79.99 a pop. Any takers for this collaboration between Google Earth and Leap Motion?

Facebook Shuts Down Gun Shop Site That Is Giving Away A Free AR-15

Facebook Shuts Down Gun Shop Site That Is Giving Away A Free AR 15Guns and the right to bear arms is an extremely touchy subject, especially for folks living in the US. The thing is, we have seen our fair share of tragedies borne out on TV because of mindless and senseless killings, where even teenagers were able to obtain firearms and run amok with them, be it at campuses or in a movie theater. Well, it seems that the Facebook fan page for Pittsburgh Tactical Firearm has been shut down by the powers-that-be at Facebook. The thing is, not only was the main page shuttered, but the second page which begun as a replacement for the first was killed off, too. Apparently, this could very well be because the owner of Pittsburgh Tactical Firearm has been running a giveaway contest for an AR-15.

Shop owner Erik Lowry said, “I still don’t know what’s going on.” He realized that the page was shut down three days back, and many of the page’s 27,000 followers subsequently called and emailed to ask what had happened. Lowry then stepped up to begin a replacement page, but that one was also shut down shortly, and despite asking at least 100 times, according to him, Facebook did not respond with any explanation. Do you think that such “censorship” is unconstitutional?

Windows 8.1 Will Reportedly Mark The Return Of The Start Button

Windows 8.1 Will Reportedly Mark The Return Of The Start Button

We’ve been hearing some interesting rumors in regards to Windows 8.1 over the past few weeks, such as the next Windows update possibly including a “Boot to Desktop“ option. It seems Microsoft may be considering bringing back the old feel of Windows with this option, and it might be taking it a step further as it’s being reported today Microsoft will bring back the much-missed Start button to Windows 8.1.

The report is coming from sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans and have revealed Windows 8.1 is expected to mark the return of the Start button. The Start button in Windows 8.1 will simply allow users to access the Start Screen and will not bring back the Start Menu of yester-Windows. The Start button is expected to look nearly identical to the current Windows flag that is used in the Charm bar. (more…)

Reddit Outages Due To Malicious DDoS Attack

Reddit Outages Due To Malicious DDoS AttackThe self-styled “front page of the Internet” was not working for some time, as the site itself underwent a flood of traffic that has been attributed to what is known as a “distributed denial of service attack”, or a malicious DDoS attack in short, which resulted in the social site’s servers huffing and puffing away as it tried to keep up. Needless to say, there were certain quarters who speculated that this could be due to the massive Boston manhunt traffic, but Reddit says otherwise. Not much information has been released on who is responsible behind the DDoS attack, as nobody decided to step forward and proudly (I use the term here rather loosely) announce that they are the ones behind it.

According to a Reddit employee who called himself “alienth,” he claimed that “the load from the Boston incident was measurable. The attack which is ongoing is orders of magnitude larger. We’re mitigating it the best we can.” Partial service has since been restored after its outage happened, and as at press time, Reddit is purring away like a newly serviced engine. We have seen our fair share of outages in the past, too, and are glad that none of them proved to be beyond redemption.
