Intel mSATA 525 Series Review

Intel mSATA 525 Series Review

Because of their small form factor, mSATA SSD are mainly found in ultra portable devices, ultrabooks, tablets or ultra compact PCs. Lower sizes units, 30GB or 60GB,  are the prime candidate for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology feature as long as your motherboard supports it . Although, there are no benefits of using an SSD as a cache for another SSD, a SSD/HDD combo is your optimal setup for that purpose. With the Intel 525 mSATA series, there are plenty of capacity options to choose from. Available sizes are: 30GB, 60GB, 120GB, 180GB and 240GB. They are ridiculously tiny and I am curious to know what is the trade off, size vs performance vs price? (more…)

Cooler Master Unveils Quickfire Stealth Mechanical Keyboard

Cooler Master Unveils Quickfire Stealth Mechanical KeyboardFor those who love typing and receiving both tactile and audio feedback while they bang away at their keys, mechanical keyboards are probably the way to go over their rubber domed, scissor-styled keyboards which offer quieter profiles and softer touches. Now if you’re in the market for a new mechanical keyboard, Cooler Master has unveiled the Quickfire Steam mechanical keyboard which is essentially a more refined version of its Quickfire Rapid mechanical keyboard. Right off the bat, the first thing you will notice is that the lettering and numbering on this keyboard is not immediately visible.

Yup, Cooler Master has taken the letters and numbers commonly found on keyboards and inscribed them at the sides of the keys themselves, meaning that on the surface it would seem like you are facing a blank keyboard. While a bit confusing, this will no doubt appeal to purists/elitists who don’t bother looking at the keys when the type, plus without actually touching the letterings/numberings, it will probably take a while before they start to fade.

Available in Cherry MX red, blue, brown or green (CM Storm exclusive), pricing of the keyboard will begin at $89.99 for the Cherry MX brown, and $104.99 for the Cherry MX green.

Chrome Makes Itself More Useful At The Office

Chrome Makes Itself More Useful At The OfficeIt goes without saying that any decent modern day office would come with at least one computer, whether it is for administrative purposes or simply as a productivity tool. Having said that, what kind of browser do you run in your enterprise environment? Assuming you have heard so much about Chrome from Google and have been raring to give it a chance, how about now, considering how additional improvements for Chrome at the office have been introduced recently.

The browser, after all, is a program that will see action most of the day, where it is used to access useful information, remain connected with people, and even to run web apps, regardless of whether you are at home, at work, or on the move. Chrome for Business might be the ideal candidate at the office, where it offers the flexibility for your IT administrator to configure Chrome so that it can automatically launch an alternate browser whenever you are running a web app built for older browsers. Should you want to use Chrome at work but fall back on older apps, it is painless ot switch seamlessly between the two browsers. That ought to provide you with enough peace of mind, no?

American Airlines Flights Resume After Computer Glitch

American Airlines Flights Resume After Computer GlitchEarlier yesterday, we did talk about how flights of American Airlines were grounded because of a computer problem, and this led to tens of thousands of passengers being stranded on airports with no way of arriving at their destinations on time – insurance companies would definitely balk at the amount of payout that they would need to make. Good to know what whatever issues American Airlines suffered with their computers, all of those have been fixed, and American Airlines tweeted late yesterday, “Our systems have been fully restored, however we expect continued delays & cancellations. More details: on.fb.me/XPTaiC”

The outage lasted for more than 4 hours, and while that might not sound like too long a wait, it has done plenty of damage to the reservations of the every passenger who decided to fly with American Airlines today. It goes without saying that the delays will last for many more hours down the road, and a system-wide ground delay is said to be in effect until 5PM ET yesterday. At the very least, American Airlines were rather chatty over social networking channels like Twitter and Facebook, so at least that part of their PR exercise is covered. Were you affected by this computer glitch?

EA Shuts Down The Sims Social, SimCity Social And Pet Society On Facebook

EA Shuts Down The Sims Social, SimCity Social And Pet Society On FacebookJust how many hours a day do you spend on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and with the slew of apps available over on Facebook, how many more minutes (or hours) are used in playing games on Facebook? Sure, there have been compelling titles in the past, but sometimes, tough decisions need to be made, and Electronic Arts has decided to terminate three titles on Facebook, namely The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society.

These three titles will go offline when June 14, 2013, arrives. The official announcement reads, “Today we are informing players of the difficult decision to retire some of our Facebook games: The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society. After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising. EA will continue to deliver popular titles for Facebook, most notably games from PopCap, including Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and the recently-announced Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.”

EA is not the first to do so, and it does not seem as though they will be the last, either.

Intel Wi-Fi Adapters Run Into Issues

Intel Wi Fi Adapters Run Into IssuesIntel, the world’s largest computer processor maker, does not only come up with the brains of the majority of notebooks and desktops in the world, they have also branched off to different parts of the silicone universe. After all, it is never wise to place all of one’s eggs in a single basket, which was why some years back, Intel did venture into the Centrino range of wireless adapters, where along the way, these have ended up as one of the most highly used wireless adapters by OEM’s in the notebook world. Integrated Wi-Fi capability in a notebook is a given these days, but it seems that lately, many Intel Centrino 6230/6235 users have experience performance issues – no idea on whether the fault lies with the driver or hardware.

It seems that the most common symptom is this – when you first use the notebook, it will be able to hook up to whatever wireless network you have assigned the notebook to without any issues, although problems of disconnection will crop up approximately an hour after use. When you try to reconnect, chances are it will show that the network no longer exists, and one of the main recourse would be the switch the Wi-Fi off and then on again, although this is not a permanent fix as it might run into similar troubles again. Hopefully a permanent solution can be released in due time.

Microsoft And Hon Hai Sign Patent Agreement For Android, Chrome Devices

Microsoft And Hon Hai Sign Patent Agreement For Android, Chrome Devices If you think that the name Hon Hai is extremely familiar, that is because they are the parent company of Foxconn, and I am quite sure that Foxconn has made quite a name for itself in the world consciousness with them being one of the main manufacturers of Apple devices. Well, just today, Microsoft Corp. and Hon Hai have come together to sign a worldwide patent licensing agreement which will be able to deliver broad coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio for devices that are powered by either the Android or Chrome operating systems, and these will include smartphones, tablets and TVs.

Needless to say, the contents of the agreement will remain confidential, although there are parties that claim that Microsoft will be on the receiving end of royalties from Hon Hai under the agreement. Hon Hai is not the first, and neither does it look like they will be the last in a growing list of contract manufacturing and original design manufacturing companies that have something to do with Android and Chrome patent licenses.

Facebook Hires Ex-Apple Maps Chief Richard Williamson

Facebook Hires Ex Apple Maps Chief Richard WilliamsonThe world of technology might be a vast one, but some names just tend to go around the market from time to time, simply because their expertise in a particular situation is always valuable. You know what they say – one man’s meat is another man’s poison, and one of those folks who were affected in the fallout due to Apple’s iOS 6 Maps snafu was project head Richard Williamson, who was speculated to have been dropped from Cupertino at the end of last year. While these are just speculations with no actual details (at least until now), Williamson might soon be back on a payroll as Bloomberg’s sources point out that Williamson has already joined Facebook’s mobile software division over the past fortnight.

Needless to say, it remains to be seen just what Williamson will churn out for Facebook, although one would be wise not to question the pedigree that Williamson brings with him where interface development is concerned, considering how he helmed that segment for key iOS apps as well as played quite a sterling role in assisting Safari to get off the ground.
