Windows 8.1 Leaked Build 9369 Hits The Internet

A Windows 8.1 build has leaked in the past as well and today yet another build has been leaked and is now available on the internet. Microsoft is expected to make an announcement regarding Windows 8.1, or Windows Blue, some time in June. The leaked builds give us an insight as to what exactly Microsoft has in store for us. Microsoft may release a preview build at the BUILD conference, whereas RTM release can be pegged for the end of summer. Those who are courageous enough to try out such leaked builds on their computers, should keep in mind that installing such software might corrupt disk on which these files are installed.

This latest Windows 8.1 leaked build 9369 doesn’t seem to have anything substantially different from the previous build. Microsoft is expected to add a new feature in every build, for all we know there could be a hidden feature in this particular build. We’re not going to be linking to download locations of the build, though you should keep in mind that they’re likely to be unstable and installing them is probably not a smart thing to do.

American Airlines grounds all flights due to system outage [UPDATE]

Are you currently waiting at the airport ready to board your American Airlines flight? Not anymore you’re not. American Airlines has announced that they have grounded all of their flights until 4pm CT due to a massive nationwide computer system outage that affects the airline’s reservation system.

chi-american-airlines-livery-20130117-001

The airline announced on Twitter that they’re having issues with their computer system. Originally, the airline thought that there were issues with the Sabre booking tool, but it seems to only involve the airline’s reservation system. The latest report is that all American Airlines flights are grounded until 4pm CT.

It’s said that American Airlines runs over 3,300 flights per day, and that somewhere around 100,000 people are being affected by the ground delay. It’s also worth pointing out that American Airlines operates over 600 aircrafts that travel to around 260 countries, so based on that information, that’s certainly a lot of flights being grounded.

American Airlines stopped dispatching new flights, stopped boarding new flights, and stopped allowing people to check in starting at around 11 am CT, so the delay will last around six hours, according to when the airline first tweeted the issue. We’re not sure how they’ll manage to get everything back on track, but we’re guessing that employees will be working overtime for the next few days in order to get caught up.

UPDATE: American Airlines says that their “systems have been fully restored,” but as expected, there will be “continued flight delays and cancellations throughout the remainder of the day.”

Apple makes up almost half of all PC operating profit

It’s no surprise that PC sales are tanking, thanks to what many believe is the beginning of the post-PC era, where smartphones and tablets are taking over. The last quarterly results of PC sale saw the largest decline in PC sales in 20 years. However, PCs are still selling, and Apple is leading the way when it comes to pure operating profit.

imac-2012-18-SlashGear--580x407

Apple currently makes up 45% of all PC operating profit, with Dell making up 13%, HP at 7%, Lenovo at 6%, ASUS at 6%, and Acer at a measly 1%., with 21% of the total pie consisting of “other” PC manufacturers. Of course, it’s important to note that profit is different than sales. Apple may not have sold the most computers, but they made the most profit from the ones they did sell.

The data comes from industry analysis firm Asymco, who say that the volumes which “made up for” low margins with PC sales are “disappearing.” Of course, Apple is experiencing the same problem, but on much lower scale, because they have “positioned themselves for growth with devices and content commerce and services.”

The problem seems to be OEMs’ reliance on Windows 8, which has been met with criticism as a step backward in desktop operating systems, whereas Apple integrates its operating system with its own hardware. Simply tacking on Windows 8 to various hardware is certainly cheaper for OEMs, but if Windows 8 fails, hardware sales go down with it.

Titan Supercomputer Has World’s Fastest Storage System

Titan Supercomputer Has World’s Fastest Storage SystemThe Titan does not fall under the supercomputer category for no particular reason, as it resides at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In fact, it is no ordinary supercomputer, having already “owned” the mantle of being the world’s most powerful supercomputer, but fret not – it is not corrupted at all, since there is nothing remotely human about it. Having said that, the Titan supercomputer is not going to stop at just being the world’s most powerful, as it is also about to take on the honor of having the world’s fastest storage system.

Just how fast is its storage system, and what kind of innards does it carry underneath the hood? Well, it seems that the Titan supercomputer comes loaded with 18,688 AMD Opteron 6274 16-core CPUs, and 18,688 Nvidia Tesla K20X GPUs, which would more or less make it a 299,008-core computer. In addition, it carries 710TB of memory, which would mean it is capable of achieving performance speeds of a whopping 1.4TB/s. Excuse me for a moment, but I will need to pick up my jaw from the floor and compose myself…

Google Autocomplete Results Censored By Tokyo Court

Google Autocomplete Results Censored By Tokyo CourtA Japanese court recently ordered the world’s most popular search engine, Google, to actually censor terms that show up in autocomplete which relate to a particular person. The ruling by the Tokyo District Court also actually asked Google to award the unknown person 300,000 yen (when converted, it is roughly $3,100) for the “mental anguish” suffered, no thanks to the association of said person alongside different criminal acts that was found in autocomplete-derived searches.

Lawyer Hiroyuki Tomita represented the unnamed plaintiff, and according to the Economic Times, claimed that Google users who typed his name into the search box did let the autocomplete function point out a fair number of criminal acts associated with his name as the additional search terms. Obviously, checking out the results of these extended search strings would result in more heartache for the man involved. Apparently, the “victim” was said to have lost his job because of the autocomplete fiasco, although we do think that a company would have other grounds to dismiss him other than to fall back on search results on Google. What do you think?

Microsoft Cuts Price On Cloud Services

Microsoft Cuts Price On Cloud ServicesIn the highly competitive arena of cloud services, software giant Microsoft has slashed prices for both hosting and processing customers’ online data, and this move can be seen to be an aggressive challenge to Amazon.com Inc’s current lead in the expanding business of ‘cloud’ computing. In fact, Microsoft was so bold as to say that they will match Amazon’s prices in order to pick up more than just a slice of the growing market, including the more common online data services.

This has been seen by some to be the most aggressive move in the market arena done by Microsoft to date, where they do seem to keep their fingers crossed that its Windows Azure business is capable of winning the hearts and minds of customers from Amazon Web Services (AWS), where AWS actually paved the way in renting out technology resources including computing power and storage. AWS has been projected to generate approximately $20 billion before 2020, and it would be interesting to see how Microsoft’s latest move will upset the apple cart – if ever.

New Self-Deleting Trojan Malware Discovered By Microsoft

New Self Deleting Trojan Malware Discovered By MicrosoftMicrosoft, one of the major names worldwide where software is concerned, has stumbled upon a rather interesting discovery. First of all, a little context to help us get started off on the right footing. Microsoft does have their own anti-virus solution on the computer, where some have deemed to be added on as an afterthought since it is perceived to be nowhere near the capability of other third-party programs, but this does not mean the bunch of Microsoft researchers are no good. On the contrary, a recent post on the Microsoft Malware Protection Center blog has showed that Microsoft has discovered a totally new Trojan malware threat which has been called “TrojanDownloader:Win32/Nemim.gen!A”.

This particular new threat is said to be able to delete its own files right after it has been installed on a computer, in an effort to prevent the files from being isolated and analyzed, and hence, would also mean being a whole lot harder to identify and remove. It is highly recommended that those who were infected by TrojanDownloader:Win32/Nemim.gen!A change all account passwords after the system has been cleaned up.

Netflix Ditching Microsoft Sliverlight For HTML5

Netflix Ditching Microsoft Sliverlight For HTML5

Those of you who have been using Netflix on your computer instead of a set-top-box or video game console are probably familiar with Microsoft Silverlight as it has been the plugin of choice to be able to stream Netflix videos onto computers for some time now. But it looks as though Netflix’s time with Silverlight will soon be coming to an end as the company is announcing it plans to move on from it to deliver their video content to computer users by way of HTML5.

Netflix has some work to do in order for its service to fully adopt HTML5, primarily support for DRM. The company says it has been collaborating with three W3C initiatives which when combined will offer the kind of functionality Netflix would require for its streaming video services. The combined extensions, dubbed the “HTML 5 Premium Video Extensions,” will allow Netflix to deliver its streams via JavaScript, allow DRM encryption and a third extension that will keep communications secure. Dell Unveils Affordable Latitude 3330 Laptop

Dell Unveils Affordable Latitude 3330 LaptopWhile Ultrabooks look good and are pretty speedy and portable due to the slim profiles, they are unfortunately a bit more expensive than regular laptops, so if you’re in the market for a portable computer but don’t have the cash, Dell has unveiled the Latitude 3330 laptop which will ship at a starting price of $419. Pretty cool, huh? So what sort of specs can we expect here? While it will not be the most powerful laptop currently available, it should be more than capable of getting the job done, such as typing up documents, formatting spreadsheets, setting up presentations and the likes.

It will come with an Intel Core i5 3337U processor and a 13.3” 1366×768 display with 2GB of DDR3L RAM, and a 720p HD webcam built-in. Like we said, not the most powerful laptop we’ve come across, but students who need a laptop and who are on a budget, the Dell Latitude 3330 should do the trick. It is expected to be available for purchase at the end of the month.
