Windows 7 Update Bug Results In Endless Reboots In Brazil

Windows 7 Update Bug Results In Endless Reboots In BrazilRome might be the Eternal City, but Windows 7 could be the eternal reboot, if nothing is done about the situation for folks living in Brazil. I am referring to those who are running the 32-bit version of Windows 7 on their notebooks in Brazil, where their machines would end up in an infinite reboot cycle after installing the latest update. Right now, it would be best if you were to make sure that update KB2823324 remains blocked at all costs, at least until Microsoft manages to fix the bug.

Apparently, this particular update seems to affect only those living in Brazil, and Microsoft has yet to pinpoint just what is wrong with the situation. After all, it definitely is no fun when your machine ends up rebooting endlessly, as it would have transformed your notebook into nothing more than an expensive paperweight. If you want to prevent yourself from falling victim, turn off automatic updates and do not update your notebook until there is a fix from Microsoft. Anyone have any idea why only Brazil is affected?

Samsung Series 9 Premium Ultrabook With Full HD Display Available For $1,399

Samsung Series 9 Premium Ultrabook With Full HD Display Available For $1,399

Samsung announced its new and improved Series 9 Premium Ultrabook a few weeks ago which would introduce a 13.3-inch full HD display, Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB SSD to its line of ultra books. And today, the company is announcing it is now available for purchase.

The Samsung Series 9 Premium Ultrabook (NP900X3E-A02US) is quite the little powerhouse as we already mentioned it’s equipped with a full HD display at a resolution of 1920 x 1080, but it also comes with 4GB of RAM, Samsung’s SuperBright technology able to provide 300 nit of brightness, a 1.3MP HD Webcam, 802.11 a/b/g/n and comes in at the extremely-light weight of 2.56lbs. Best of all, the previously revealed price of $1,899.99 has been slashed down to $1,399.99, making this a much more affordable ultrabook.

Considering we were thoroughly impressed with the Samsung Series 9 (NP900) in our review, we certainly like the direction Samsung is taking its 13-inch ultrabook by including some serious hardware in it while keeping its weight relatively light. We can’t wait to get our hands on the new Premium Ultrabook and will hopefully have a review for you guys in the coming weeks.

The ZenDock Is An Elegant Way To Manage Your MacBook’s Cables

The ZenDock Is An Elegant Way To Manage Your MacBooks CablesWe’ve seen various ways to manage cables on a desk before, but if have a MacBook computer that you take with you on the go and need to plug in a variety of peripherals and cables, such as USB flash drives, Ethernet cables, display cables and power cables, we understand just how messy it can get, not to mention it probably gets a bit time consuming having to unplug all of them one by one. The good news is if you’re willing to spend $139, you will be able to get yourself a ZenDock, which as you can see in the image above is a clean and elegant way of managing your cables, all in a high quality aluminum body designed to match the MacBook.

The ZenDock will plug into the side of your MacBook and will connect to the various ports on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Pro with Retina display. By combining all the ports into a single block of aluminum, this also allows ease of removal rather than unplugging devices one by one. As it stands the Pro version of ZenDock will play nicely with MacBook Pros and will support gigabit Ethernet, FireWire, Mini DisplayPort, 3 x USB 3.0 ports, and an audio input and output. The ZenDock Retina model will support a Mini DisplayPort, 3 x USB 3.0 ports, and audio in and out ports, and Thunderbolt passthrough connection as well. Both models will also feature a slot for the MagSafe power cable.

The ZenDock Kickstarter project is currently a little over halfway its funding goal, so if you’d like to order yourself a copy upon successful funding and release, head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.

Google Links Google+ Pages To YouTube Accounts

Google Links Google+ Pages To YouTube AccountsIt seems that Internet search giant Google is currently testing out a new kind of program which will enable creators to link up their Google+ pages to their respective YouTube accounts and channels. This feature remains as a beta at the moment, so do not fret that you have yet to gain access to it. Basically, it works like this – once linked, all you need is a solitary Google account, and that single account is capable of managing up to 50 YouTube channels, now how about that?

Of course, as the owner, you will need to make the switch between accounts in order to manage each of them individually. Google also claims that linking accounts will help open up new features, where among them include improved video sharing, live Hangout broadcasting and the bonus of seeing a YouTube tab on Google+. In order to activate this feature, YouTube users are able to choose a “Connect with a Google+ page (beta)” option that can be found in their advanced account settings. Once there, you can choose from linking a new Google+ page, to linking an existing Google+ page which has been under the ownership or management of the YouTube account, followed by linking with a Google+ profile.

Identical Twins Meet For The First Time On Facebook

Identical Twins Meet For The First Time On FacebookI guess you can say that most twins who grow up together tend to be inseparable, but there are times in life when identical twins had to be separated at birth due to circumstances, and Samantha Futerman and Anais Bordier are just such a pair. Separated at birth. Futerman is currently an actress who lives in Los Angeles, while Bordier is a French fashion design student who resides in the capital of the Old World, London. It took the serendipity of one of Bordier’s friends to discover a YouTube video of Futerman, and she then mentioned their extremely close physical resemblance to her doppleganger, who was contacted over on Facebook.

One thing led to another, and it was eventually realized that both of the girls share the same birthday, and were placed in foster care before being adopted by different families. Futerman shared the experience of her early contact with Bordier, saying,”I knew I was about to embark on a journey that no one else had ventured before. Through just a Facebook induced interaction, I was positive that this girl was in fact my biological twin sister.” The light side of Facebook is shared once again, and we like heartwarming stories like these.

Researchers use brainwave device to replace passwords with passthoughts

Many techies have dreamed of the day when they can control things by simply thinking about them, and that reality is yet a step closer thanks to researchers at the University of California Berkeley’s School of Information and a $99 brainwave device. Using NeuroSky’s Mindset wearable EEG headset and custom software, users have successfully replaced passwords with passthoughts.

Screenshot from 2013-04-11 02:22:20

While one might be inclined to imagine a huge, expensive headset beyond the means of the average consumer, NeuroSky’s brainwave headset is priced at only $99, and connects to a computer or mobile device via Bluetooth connectivity. The headset has an ear-piece for audio, a grounding clip that goes on the ear, and a small sensor that rests on the forehead. In many ways, it resembles a cross beween an audio headset and an augmented reality eye piece.

Using this device, the researchers measured participants’ brainwaves and were able to use the resulting data to unlock a computer using a so-called passthought rather than a password. The passthought involves thinking of a specific thing, such as a word repeatedly or a certain movement. Such a method is more secure than a conventional password, and takes biometric security to a whole new level.

Just like placing a finger on a biometric scanner won’t unlock a computer unless it has the right fingerprint, using a brainwave headset to think of the passthought won’t unlock the computer unless it is the owner. This is because one’s brainwaves are unique, and one person thinking of something won’t have the same pattern as another person thinking the same thing. Of course, recovering a forgotten passthought is sure to be more difficult than recovering a forgotten password.

IDC: Worldwide PC shipments fell 13.9% in first quarter

The IDC reports that worldwide shipments of PCs declined 13.9% in Q1 2013 compared to Q1 2012. The 13.9% decline is much higher than the IDC expected in its forecast. It states that the decline of PC shipments most likely has to do with the poor reception of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. The IDC also states that Microsoft’s hybrid tablet/laptops have seen poor sales due to its high prices and inhibited component supplies.

IDC PC shipments fell 13.9 percent in first quarter

In Q1 2013, there were a total of 76,294,000 PCs shipped worldwide. HP accounted for 11,997,000 of those shipments, garnering a 15.7% market share. However, its total shipments last quarter was 23.7% less than the 15,726,000 it shipped in Q1 2012. Lenovo came in second place with 11,700,000 PCs shipped, and 15.3% of the market share. Its PC shipments was off only by 5,000 compared to Q1 2012.

Dell came in 3rd place with 9.010,000 PCs shipped, and 11.8% of the market share. Its shipments dropped 10.9% from its 10,110,000 shipments in Q1 2012. Acer came in 4th place with 6,150,000 PCs shipped, claiming 8.1% of the market. It suffered a whopping 31.3% decline from its Q1 2012′s 8,952,000 PCs shipped. ASUS comes in last with 4,363,000 PCs shipped, claiming 5.7% of the market. It suffered a 19.2% decline from the 5,401,000 PC shipments it made in Q1 2012.

All of the other PC manufacturers shipped a total of 33,075,000 PCs, claiming the remaining 43.4% of the market. Their shipments dropped 10% from last year when it shipped 36,739,000 PCs. IDC Research Director of Personal Computing, David Daoud, states, “Although the reduction in shipments was not a surprise, the magnitude of the contraction is both surprising and worrisome.” According to the IDC, Q1 2013 was the worst quarter ever for PCs, and it has been tracking PC quarterly shipments since 1994. The IDC states that a major factor for this huge decline is most likely due to the restructuring that both HP and Dell are going through

Drop In PC Shipments Linked To Windows 8 Flop

Drop In PC Shipments Linked To Windows 8 Flop

According to a report published by International Data Corp., first quarter global computer shipments dipped 14% as compared to last year. The decline is almost double than the forecasted figure, which was pegged at 7.7%. In fact this is the worst quarter for PC shipments since 1994 when the International Data Corp. started keeping track of quarterly PC shipments. Weak economy is not the only thing that is hurting PC sales, more and more customers are opting for mobile devices. Windows 8 was expected to give PC shipments a boost, but so far it has failed to do so.

IDC’s analyst Bob O’Donnell says that while consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the major changes in UI, removal of Start button and rising costs associated with touch enabled PCs are driving users away to dedicated tablets. Right now there are no signs that the decline in traditional PC sales is going to end in the near future. Perhaps it is time PC manufacturers stepped up their game? What steps do you think PC manufacturers should take to plug the decline as soon as possible?

Dropbox Can Be Used To Find Your Stolen Computer

Dropbox has been used as a digital locker for all of your files you deem important enough to upload, but one thing we never consider it could be used for is to help find your stolen computer. The folks at Hack College has come up with a way to do just that, making it completely OK for you to make a trip to the bathroom at Starbucks without packing everything up.

The process to use Dropbox to retrieve your stolen goods first requires you to not only have a Dropbox account, but to have its program continually running on your computer at all times. We recommend you take care of both of those right now just in case you haven’t already. (more…)
