Amazon’s Cloud Accounts Carry Unsecured Data

Amazon’s Cloud Accounts Carry Unsecured DataSecurity can be said to be of paramount importance when it comes to your personal data and private information, and when you decide to upload stuff to the cloud, you would surely be taking a risk that there is a remote possibility of a hack or security breach by outsiders. Of course, it does not help that it has been discovered that when probed Amazon’s S3 servers which hosts their cloud, offers nearly 2,000 unique S3 “buckets” that were left open to the public, and if translated to plain English, these “buckets” carry unsecured passwords, photos and other personal files.

It must be said that Amazon did set S3 accounts to private by default, although these buckets can still be opened to the public manually, or it ended up this way as a misconfiguration. Of course, the issues are no more than user error, but upon realizing what was discovered, Amazon has stepped out by treating this particular matter with a sense of urgency, and has started to warn its users that their files could jolly well be publicly accessible. Hence, Amazon has started to put “measures in place to proactively identify misconfigured files and buckets moving forward.”

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Ready For Delivery

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Ready For DeliveryWhen we first laid our eyes on the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, it was back in January earlier this year at CES 2013, and you can more or less say that this is definitely one of the cooler convertible Ultrabooks around. The thing is, the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix was not quite ready yet for prime time action back then, and it even missed the February 2013 release date, and with the first quarter of the year coming to a close, just how much longer must the agonizing wait be?

Well, Lenovo recently mentioned that the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix will be made available sometime next month, which means it is already more or less ready for delivery. Just before we conclude, we would like to refresh the memories of those who have forgotten about the ThinkPad Helix’s hardware specifications, where it will include an 11.6-inch Full HD display at 400 nits brightness, carry 3rd generation Intel Core processors, has a pen input device, Intel HD4000 as the graphics chipset of choice, up to 8GB RAM, a 128GB SSD, and runs on Windows 8 as the operating system of choice. Pricing of the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix remains at $1,499 for the entry level model and goes up from there.

Gemini Could Be Future Microsoft Office Product

Gemini Could Be Future Microsoft Office ProductYesterday, we brought you word that Microsoft has already confirmed that the next version of their Windows operating system will be known as Windows Blue, but this does not mean that the Windows operating system is the only thing from Microsoft to receive a revamp. No sir, here we are with whispers that Windows Blue actually has a “twin”, so to speak, where the future version of Microsoft Office will be simply known as “Gemini”.

Gemini is said to be a wave of Office releases that will arrive in the coming time span of over two more years, where the first wave will be aligned with Windows Blue, and users will be able to enjoy updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, assuming all goes well and it is released later this fall. It remains to be seen whether these apps will take on the appearance of full Metro-Style/Windows Store versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and only time will tell, so sit tight and enjoy the ride. It might be a paradigm shift with Windows 8 and subsequent operating system versions, but as long as life gets easier and better, we’re all for it.

Facebook Tests Targeted Ads In News Feed

Facebook Tests Targeted Ads In News FeedA company like Facebook certainly needs to find ways to generate revenue, and with the humongous user base that it has, that should not be too much of a problem for them. In fact, ads in Facebook have started to creep in for some time now, in subtle ways, and here we are with the world’s largest social network testing out targeted ads in the News Feed, although it is not every one who will experience these ads, only a bunch of folks as Facebook tests its Exchange ad delivery system.

Facebook posted earlier in the day, “Allowing advertisers to reach people in News Feed is important because people spend more time in News Feed than any other part of Facebook.” Right now, advertisers were relegated to feature standard ads in the right-hand side bar of Facebook on a desktop or notebook, but now they are able to do the same when it comes to ads in the News Feed, now how about that? Mobile users should be pleased to know that there were no advertising changes made for mobile clients, or those could very well be in the pipeline but have yet to be announced.

Internet Slows Down After History’s Biggest Cyber Attack

Internet Slows Down After History’s Biggest Cyber AttackIs it possible to experience a “traffic jam” on the anecdotal information superhighway? The simple answer, yes! I noticed it around 9 hours ago, but did not give too much thought into it, thinking that my local ISP’s underwater cable somewhere is experiencing issues as normal, but it seems that there is more than meets the eye. The Internet has apparently slowed down due to what security experts have deemed to be the biggest cyber-attack ever experienced in the short history of the Internet.

It seems that a particular row that sparked off being a spam-fighting group and hosting firm resulted in retaliation attacks that of course, affected the Internet in a negative manner, including impacting popular services such as Netflix. Experts have this albatross around their neck that it could potentially escalate to a level that disrupts banking and email systems. So far, five national cyber-police-forces are looking into these attacks.

Spamhaus has been identified as one of the two groups, as the London and Geneva based group is known to be a non-profit organisation who intends to assist email providers filter out spam and other unwanted content. They recently blocked servers maintained by Cyberbunker, a Dutch web host who claims that it has the right to host anything except child pornography and terrorism-related material. Cyberbunker saw Spamhaus as abusing its position, and this is where the tiff started, much to the detriment of everyone else. Hopefully the DDoS attacks against one another will cease so that the world can get on with our normal lives.

Intel Expects $599 Ultrabooks To Arrive In The Market This Holiday Season

Intel Expects $599 Ultrabooks To Arrive In The Market This Holiday SeasonUltrabooks have started to become popular alternatives to regular laptops due to its thin and slim form factor, and the fact that most Ultrabooks come bundled with speedy SSDs versus regular HDDs found on normal laptops. However Ultrabooks tend to be priced at the higher-end of the market, meaning that customers who don’t see the point in paying $999 for a laptop will not buy one. However according to Intel at the Intel Solutions Summit, Kirk Skaugen, the senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s PC Client Group came out and said that we might be able to look forward to $599 Ultrabooks entering the market this holiday season.

These $599 Ultrabooks are expected to be built on Intel’s Haswell chipset, making it more affordable, but apparently more feature-rich compared to current generation devices. Intel’s reference Haswell model is expected to come with a high-res touchscreen display, speedier SSDs, voice recognition and facial recognition, and best of all, “all-day” battery life which we guess is definitely subject to testing and will vary from user to user. However we have to wonder if dropping the price down to $599, will OEMs have to sacrifice premium materials in favor of plastic (i.e. the Samsung Series 9 uses aluminum for its chassis)?
