Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Now An Automatic Update

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Now An Automatic UpdateDid you hear the latest from Microsoft? The software giant has started to roll out Windows 7 Service Pack 1 as an automatic update, never mind that Service Pack 1 was originally released a couple of years ago. Good thing that the Microsoft folks have decided to make this an automatic update instead of requiring users to install it manually using Windows Update, as you can never quite tell when a momentary lapse in concentration or a short memory could result in not installing the Service Pack 1, which could result in a system be compromised down the road.

Microsoft said as of today, “the installation will be fully automatic with no user action required for those who already have Automatic Update enabled. SP1 will be released gradually over the coming weeks to all customers on the RTM version of Windows 7.” Basically, that is what we love computers to move towards to – smarter software that requires less maintenance on the part of the consumer, without compromising on safety and security. Are you still using Windows 7 as your operating system of choice at this point in time, or have you already moved to the beauty that is Windows 8?

Internet Pioneers Pick $1.5 Million Prize

Internet Pioneers Pick $1.5 Million PrizeThe only reason you can read this on your computer or mobile device is because of the Internet, where five engineers were the ones behind the Internet. Good to know that after all of these years, these engineers were given additional recognition, where they were awarded with a $1.5-million prize that the British organisers hope will eventually be on par with the Nobel Prize when it comes to engineering.

Robert Kahn, Vinton Cerf as well as Marc Andreessen of the US will share in this inaugural £1-million Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering with Louis Pouzin of France and Tim Berners-Lee of Britain. According to Alec Broers, chair of the judging panel, “The emergence of the internet and the web involved many teams of people all over the world. However, these five visionary engineers, never before honoured together as a group, led the key developments that shaped the internet and web as a coherent system and brought them into public use.”

Kahn, Cerf and Pouzin were credited to have made “seminal” contributions to the design and protocols which right now make up the fundamental architecture of the Internet, while Berners-Lee is the one who was credited with “inventing’ the World Wide Web. Better late than never, no?

Microsoft Windows 9 Arriving Next November?

Microsoft Windows 9 Arriving Next November?I will be the first to admit that I would be pretty surprised if the above were to be true, that Microsoft Windows 9 will hit the markets sometime next November. It just feels too soon, and do we really need a next generation desktop operating system even before the entire world has made Windows 8 as their operating system of choice for millions of computers worldwide? One thing’s for sure though, you can bet your bottom dollar that Microsoft is definitely working on a next generation of their desktop operating system, but what they have decided to call it, and when will it roll out to the masses, remain to be seen. It would be a waste of time, too, to speculate on such details.

Win8China, a site that has provided a bunch of Windows leaks in the past which were hits (as well as misses), claimed that the software giant is working on Windows 9 for a tentative November 2014 product launch, and it would be as early as next January where we will be able to check out a beta. This, however, does jive with whispers on the street that Windows would get a yearly operating system update, and Windows Blue being touted to be a Windows 8 update later this year, so what’s stopping Windows 9 from a November 2014 release? All in all, we will be on our toes to make sure that when Windows 9 arrives, we will report it.

Lenovo ThinkPad T431s Design A Departure From The Norm

Lenovo ThinkPad T431s Design A Departure From The NormIn a world where not many things are certain (other than death and taxes, of course), it seems that the now familiar ThinkPad design from Lenovo has been a mainstay for years, being noted for their build quality, battery life as well as relatively lightweight chassis amongst others. Well, Lenovo seems to have gotten a little bit more adventurous this time around, with the latest ThinkPad T431s, which happens to be the first device that is based on an all new design for the ThinkPad series.

According to the Lenovo blog, the entire ThinkPad T431s design came about after Lenovo “shadowed” both ThinkPad and non-ThinkPad users alike, in addition to checking out just what other young adults in different countries liked over a nine month period. This “gestation” period, so to speak, allowed Lenovo to pick up on what folks liked and did not when using notebooks, and armed with such information, resulted in the ThinkPad T431s’ final design. What do you think of the departure from its traditional look? It seems that the ThinkPad T431s will come with 4GB RAM (up to 12GB), a 14” display at 1,600×900 resolution, a 320GB hard drive (SSD optional), and a choice of either Windows 7 or Windows 8, as it is due to hit the market sometime later this April for $949 a pop.

Google Keep Might Be A New Google Service

Google Keep Might Be A New Google ServiceOut with the old, and in with the new. Granted, Google Reader is an RSS reader, and what we are going to focus on here would be Google Keep, a potential note taking service that will most probably be in the same vein as Evernote or Pocket, and it has also been given the codename “Memento” that definitely sheds more light on what the entire shebang is all about. Google did leave some digital “bread crumbs” behind, such as the URL https://drive.google.com/keep/ which incidentally, directs you to a fake “Page Not Found”, while the URL http://g.co/keep sends you to a non-existent Play Store app.

Not only that, you will be able to check out the service’s favicons here and here. It was discovered that a link for Google Keep was discovered in a screenshot for Instant Preview in the Android browser back in July last year, where “Add to Google Keep” might eventually be a common feature that we see in websites from now on. What do you think?

Feedly Picks Up 500,000 New Users After Google Reader’s Demise Was Announced

Feedly Picks Up 500,000 New Users After Google Reader’s Demise Was AnnouncedSo, how has the announcement of Google Reader closing its doors this coming July 1st affected you so far? We do know that Digg wants to create their own RSS reader, and another alternative RSS reader out there would be Feedly. The thing is, Feedly has certainly benefited from Google Reader’s impending demise, where they managed to gain another half a million new users in just two days. Yes sir, 500,000 new users in a mere 48 hours.

Other substitutes in place of Google Reader, apart from Feedly, of course, and they include Flipboard and Newsblur. Of course, none of these will be a precise replacement to Google Reader, where each would be a decent replacement. Of course, with such a huge influx of new users on Feedly, the company’s main priority at the point in time, or at least, the next 30 days, would be to ensure that the service remains up and running, without running into any obstacles or hiccups. According to Feedly, they are proud to say that Google Reader users are able to migrate seamlessly to its service when July 1st rolls around.
