Google Experiments With Sites, Removes Navigation Bar

Google Experiments With Sites, Removes Navigation BarGoogle might be in the midst of their spring cleaning exercise (which also saw Google Reader being discontinued this coming July 1st, of course), and they are also testing out a new design across the range of its websites, which will see the removal of the black navigation bar located at the top. This particular change comes after a separate test in which Google actually replaced the navigation bar with a menu that is not too different from the one found in Chrome OS.

Replacing the well loved navigation with another one is fine with us, and would also sit well with many others, but where is the logic behind the complete removal of a navigation bar? It is not as though the navigation bar is so offensive dog poo on your shoe’s sole, and right now, said navigation bar that performed a disappearing act is the only element which links its different Web services together. Reports do point to a similar design being implemented across the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Let us hope that this is not a permanent thing, as Google attempts not to throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater.

Retina MacBook Pro Owner Files Lawsuit Against Apple Over Ghosting Display

Retina MacBook Pro Owner Files Lawsuit Against Apple Over Ghosting DisplayIt seems that the owner of a Retina MacBook Pro has filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple, alleging that Apple has not bothered to acknowledge, fix or warn users that Retina display made by LG are prone to “ghosting”. Beau Hodges complained that customers have no way of knowing what they have bought (in terms of whether they got an LG or Samsung display) and that Apple sales people do not disclose that there are “different levels of performance and quality”. There are videos where proof has been shown that LG display panels in the 15” Retina MacBook Pro are prone to ghosting, although it is speculated that LG panels were used only in the early versions of the MacBook Pro and were replaced by Samsung panels later on.

Hodges claims that Apple must have known about these issues “because it has spent a considerable amount of time testing the products during research and development, and has been inundated with complaints from customers.” We’re not sure what the result of this class-action lawsuit is going to be, but what do you guys think? Any Retina MacBook Pro owners out there experience similar issues with their displays as well?

Samsung’s CEO Thinks There’s “Lackluster Demand” For Windows Products

Samsungs CEO Thinks Theres Lackluster Demand For Windows ProductsWith the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung has to be feeling pleased with itself. After all they have launched one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2013, regardless whether some of you think it was a complete bust or the next best thing. Sitting down in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, newly appointed co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, JK Shin, was asked about Samsung’s relationship with Microsoft, and if Samsung had begun to work closely with the Redmond company after seeing what Nokia has been doing.

Interesting Shin had this to say about Microsoft’s smartphones and tablets, which is that they aren’t selling very well. Shin also went on to state that over in Europe, there is lackluster demand for Windows-based products, which we guess could have explained why Samsung decided to pull the plug on the ATIV Tab Windows RT in Europe. We guess this isn’t all too surprising, after all Samsung hasn’t exactly been in the forefront when it comes to Windows Phone devices, and the pulling of the ATIV Tab seems to indicate that the South Korean manufacturer might have less faith in the Windows platform that we were led to believe.

Google Merges Maps And Search Division

Google Merges Maps And Search DivisionGoogle is not a company that is averse to making the tough decisions, and most recently, we were “treated” to news that Google Reader will be persona non grata when July 1st rolls around on your calendar. The thing is, we have yet another bit of news concerning Google (other than having Andy Rubin step down from his position as head of the Android division) as well, in addition to another major bit – that Google will be merging two of their major divisions, namely Maps and Search, where this new amalgamation will be headed by the Search head, Alan Eustace.

The head of the Maps division, Jeff Huber, has already confirmed this report from The Wall Street Journal over on his Google+ page, claiming that he will still remain with the search giant, although paying his dues at the Google X research division. We do wonder what kind of new creations will roll out from this alliance of departments, but I am quite sure that whatever Google releases from here will definitely lean more towards the users’ best interests than anything else.

Digg Wants To Create Own RSS Reader

Digg Wants To Create Own RSS ReaderThe news of Google Reader calling it a day in a few months’ time certainly proved to be quite a shock to those who did not expect such an announcement, and since then, other companies would love to take up the mantle and possibly, mindshare of those soon-to-be orphaned Google Reader users. In fact, the folks over at Digg have stepped forward with belief that Google Reader is worth saving, which is why they intend to come up with an RSS reader of their own sometime in the second half of this year.

Digg hopes that this attempt of theirs will be able to make the Internet a more approachable and digestible place to hang out (virtually speaking, of course), and has clearly placed it at the top of their priority list after Google’s recent announcement. Digg intends to identify and rebuild the best of Google Reader’s features (including its API), bringing them up to speed with Internet trends for this year, and hope to churn out a worthy successor along the way. Hence, they will obviously need help from the masses, including input from their readers, so you can always drop by Digg and share with them your two cents. [Press Release]

Netflix Offers $100,000 In Prizes For Improvement Ideas

Netflix Offers $100,000 In Prizes For Improvement IdeasNetflix wants your brains to think of innovative solutions on their behalf, and of course, for all your hard work and enterprising spirit, you will be rewarded financially. In fact, Netflix, the streaming video industry behemoth, has put up a $100,000 bounty that is spread across 10 prizes for cloud computing solutions, and winners will be honored at the Amazon Web Services Re:Invent conference that is happening later this November.

Known as the Netflix Cloud Prize, it intends to challenge “developers around the world to do their very best to improve the features, usability, quality, reliability and security of computing resources delivered as a service over the Internet.” There will be 10 categories to “fight for”, so to speak, where they will be judged by a panel of experts including Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels, Thoughtworks Chief Scientist Martin Fowler, Strategist Simon Wardley, Telx SVP Joe Weinman, University of Aarhus Developer Training Expert Aino Corry and Netflix Cloud V. If you look at it, this is a great way for Netflix to gain an upper hand over its competition and consolidate its position at the top, considering $100,000 would be a drop in the ocean if the improvements could help them reap millions of dollars down the road with high tech innovative cloud solutions. Facebook Could Adopt Hashtags Soon

Facebook Could Adopt Hashtags SoonHashtags has not been part of Facebook culture for the longest time, but it seems that the social networking giant is set to change their stance and viewpoint on hashtags. This is one feature that Twitter users absolutely love, where it was first used by users of Internet Relay Chat (IRC), who added a the “#” character in order to link posts. Twitter users jumped on the hashtag bandwagon approximately half a dozen years back, so much so that there was enough volume of users to see hashtags.org born in order to promote and curate the tags.

Not only that, Twitter added hyperlinks to hashtags in 2009, making sure that each click would result in a search which listed all the tweets that used the tag. Marketers have also made attempts to seed their own hashtags, and since then the humble hashtag has grown into a potent research tool, too. Facebook might have been bitten by the green eyed monster somewhat, and informed the Wall Street Journal that they too, want to adopt hashtags. The thing is, we have absolutely no idea on when this will happen, and what do you think Twitter’s response will be? #meh
