Google Could Work On Next Day Shipping Program

Google Could Work On Next Day Shipping ProgramGoogle is a company that started off mainly in the search department, before they started growing rapidly and also gained a significant foothold in the online ad industry, with their Google Ads program that has certainly helped plenty of folks take the jump to being a “pro-blogger”. Well, it seems that Google is not a company that rests on its laurels, where they continue to work on a slew of products with the aim of being the dominant force. TechCrunch claims that Google has Amazon in its sights now, as the Internet search giant has been quietly working with a fair number of nationwide retail chains, which could very well comprise of the likes of Walmart, Target and Walgreens, to develop a new next-day shipping service which intends to undercut Amazon Prime.

It is said that this service will more or less cost anywhere from $64 to $69 annually, which is a rather significant savings compared to the $79 that Amazon Prime charges. Bear in mind that you should take this bit of news with a pinch of salt, since there was no launch timeframe in the picture, and nothing has been finalized and inked just yet.

ASUS Transformer AiO: Where Windows 8 Meets Android

ASUS Transformer AiO: Where Windows 8 Meets AndroidAll-in-one desktop systems are usually a great way to save table space since it usually does away with the need for a bulky CPU case, and if you’re in the market for a new AIO system, ASUS has announced the Transformer AiO desktop system.

Considering that ASUS is using the Transformer name for this particular product, you’ve guessed it right if you thought that this would be some sort of hybrid system where tablet meets desktop. The display of the Transformer AiO when unplugged from the PC Station transforms the device into a fully functioning Android tablet, albeit a rather large tablet at 18.4”. Probably not bag or pocket friendly, but it should come in handy if you want to make presentations at the offices of clients. (more…)

Facial Recognition Software Resulted In Over 2,500 Arrests

Facial Recognition Software Resulted In Over 2,500 ArrestsAccording to New York state officials, the DMV’s implementation of facial recognition software when it comes to driver’s licenses from the dawn of 2010 onwards, has managed to result in over 2,500 arrests of guilty people who attempt to steal someone else’s identity, or at least, want to obtain a second license. This is what Gov. Andrew Cuomo had to say about the situation, “Through this program, we are successfully taking dangerous drivers off our roads, helping to track down criminals, and protecting taxpayer dollars — sending a clear message that New York State does not tolerate identity fraud and those who try will be caught.”

New York’s DMV did look into 13,000 possible cases of identity fraud with the help of facial recognition technology, resulting in 2,500 arrests with “more than 5,000 individuals facing administrative action.” That is an awful lot when you think about it – nearly 40% of all cases that are looked into. Every single day, new photos taken at the DMV will be added to the database, which already amounts to 20 million photographs thereabouts.

Kinect Will Soon Replace Your Mouse With Your Hands

Kinect Will Soon Replace Your Mouse With Your Hands

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox is expected to have its Kinect heavily integrated into the system, but the company is looking past the home console market to have computers rely on it as well.

Microsoft’s TechFest is going on this week and the company is showing an updated version of its SDK which will introduce some new hand-gesture functionality to their programs. The new SDK will allow developers to have the user pinch-to-zoom with their hands and the ability to pan around the screen, all of which is done by waving and clenching their hands. Halfbrick’s Jetpack Joyride was demoed featuring the new Kinect SDK in order to show how games can make use of the new technology. (more…)

Microsoft To Cut Prices For Windows 8 And Office To Encourage OEM Adoption

Microsoft To Cut Prices For Windows 8 And Office To Encourage OEM AdoptionAccording to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal (paid article), it seems that Microsoft will be offering price breaks on their Windows 8 and Microsoft Office software. Unfortunately these price breaks will not be for consumers, but rather they are catered towards OEMs in hopes that by making Windows 8 and Office cheaper to license, it will spur the development of smaller, touch-based Windows laptops. Apparently Windows 8 has not been doing so well due to Windows 8 notebooks and tablets being considered too expensive.

Digitimes has also reported the same thing and according to the deal Microsoft is reportedly offering OEMs, a Windows 8 plus Office bundle can be had for $30 for touchscreen devices under 10.8”. This is compared to the previous price which was set at a much more expensive $120. While that sounds good as far as OEMs are concerned, hopefully the reduction in price for them will be translated into retail price breaks for regular consumers as well.

2013 Retina MacBook Pro Has Fan Speed Issues

2013 Retina MacBook Pro Has Fan Speed IssuesSo, you think that you are smug with the 2013 Retina MacBook Pro in your possession, while the rest of your mates are rocking on to a 2012 or older model? Well, not everything that is the latest is always the greatest, although that is the general rule of thumb most of the time, as the 2013 Retina MacBook Pro is said to have issues with its fan speed.

YouTube user Oyinko, as well as a bunch of other folks over at the official Apple support forums, did mention that the fan in the 2013 Retina MacBook Pro model will actually increase its speed to a potentially dangerous level, never mind that the MacBook Pro itself is not doing anything processor intensive, and hence, logically would not need that kind of cool air. According to Oyinko, the possible reason why the fan has gone all wonky would be the change of a Samsung SSD to that of a Sandisk SSD, where the new (and obviously foreign) Sandisk ends up creating a conflict in fan management. Short of an update from Apple to fix this issue, there does not seem to be any other method. Are you affected as well?

Datamancer Executive Keyboard

Datamancer Executive KeyboardWhen it comes to the typing instrument of your choice, just which particular model floats your boat? Well, assuming you happen to have the dough to spare this time around, how about dropping $750 on the Datamancer Executive Keyboard? Currently on sale over at Etsy, the website that does have its fair share of fine things, the Datamancer Executive Keyboard will feature an aluminum body, mechanical switches, and typewriter keys. Good to know that after you have decided to fork out $750 for it, shipping has been factored in.

The Datamancer Executive Keyboard will feature a standard US ANSI 104-key QWERTY layout, although those of you living across the pond can also settle for custom European layouts. All keys in the layout would be the main centerpiece of this input device, where they have been specially done up in a style which is reminiscent of that of antique typewriter keys. Since it plugs in via USB, it ought to play nice with either PC or Mac platforms, and a slick cloth cable cover helps keep things unraveled.

Microsoft Not Dropping Scroogle Campaign After All

Microsoft Not Dropping Scroogle Campaign After AllIt was just a couple of days ago when we reported that Microsoft will finally put an end to the Scroogled campaign (obviously, the reference of the name itself does point towards an anti-Google theme), but apparently reports of those were greatly exaggerated. According to Microsoft, “Scroogled will go on as long as Google keeps Scroogling people.” Now that is a pretty strong statement to make, and it sticks in the mind like super glue.

Word has it that the software giant was extremely pleased with how the previous two chapters of its Scroogled campaign went, that they are gearing themselves up for yet another chapter. The Scroogle campaign kicked off originally, hoping to achieve the objective of getting users to drop Gmail and settle for Outlook.com instead, touting that Google actually scans users’ e-mails in order to determine relevant advertisements that are placed alongside the messages. All in all, it does seem that this healthy competition is good for the end user, as we get to see both companies remain on their toes to deliver the best experience possible at all times.
