Seagate Quits 7200rpm Laptop Hard Drive Market

Seagate Quits 7200rpm Laptop Hard Drive MarketSeagate, a name that is synonymous with hard drives is about to raise the white flag when it comes to manufacturing 7200rpm hard drives for notebooks. Yes sir, this is true, Seagate will no longer continue to produce 2.5-inch drives for notebooks, which means you will soon be unable to hear the sweet, sweet whirring and clicking of 7200 revolutions per minute within the belly of your notebook’s chassis. Surprising? Not really, considering how 7200rpm hard drives, being faster compared to the 5400rpm drives which are crammed into more budget oriented notebooks these days, do not have a market to cater to any more as premium notebooks lean towards SSDs or SSD/HDD hybrids.

This does not mean that Seagate will also quit the 3.5-inch 7200rpm hard drive market for desktop computers, at least, not for the time being. While Seagate has not yet ventured into the world of solid state drives, they have rolled out hybrid drives which will merge a spacious hard drive with tiny bits of far faster solid state storage, aiming to deliver the best of both worlds.

Jailed Hacker Hacks Prison Computers From IT Class

Jailed Hacker Hacks Prison Computers From IT ClassNicholas Webber, who is currently serving five years in jail after creating a hacker’s forum site known as GhostMarket, was invited into an IT class in jail, which is more or less one of the last few places where he should be. Well, what do you in such a situation? The rather modern Isis prison invited him to an IT class, and of course, the inevitable consequence was having the prison’s computer system hacked.

This rather peculiar miscalculation which resulted in the 2011 hacking incident was brought up because the teacher who ran the IT class sued the college which employed him for unfair dismissal. According to Michael Fox, he said that he didn’t know that Webber was a hacker, leaving the prison to ban him, while Kensington and Chelsea College decided to drop him from their payroll. According to the BBC, Isis was “‘bedeviled’ with faulty technology.” Interesting choice of words, would you not say so? It is somewhat akin to letting Joker free into Arkham society, believing that he is “cured” of his murderous madness, if you need something more culturally relevant.

MSI Unveils AG2712 All-In-One Gaming Rig

MSI Unveils AG2712 All In One Gaming RigWhen it comes to gaming, most gamers tend to sport monstrous-looking rigs. There are a few reasons behind their choice, usually boiling down to multiple hard drives, large graphic cards and an extensive cooling system that a mini-ITX gaming rig will find hard to achieve. That being said, that’s pretty much the reason why all-in-one desktop systems aren’t exactly favored by gamers either, but it seems that MSI is hoping to change that. The company announced the AG2712 all-in-one gaming system a couple of days ago, but they are currently parading the device at CeBIT 2013.

For those hearing about the device for the first time, the MSI AG2712 is a 27” Full HD all-in-one desktop system that based on its looks, you wouldn’t be able to tell it was designed for gamers (gaming rigs tend to be flashier, think Alienware). The system will run on an Intel Core i7 ivy Bridge processor, although it is possible that it will be upgraded to Haswell later on. In terms of graphics, you can expect to find an NVIDIA GeForce 670MX GPU which was announced back in 2012. Unfortunately the 670MX is considered to be a laptop-grade GPU which means that don’t expect to max out the settings on games like Crysis 3. No word on pricing just yet, but given its specs, we don’t expect it to cost a fortune. Then again gamers looking for a new rig will probably be better off building one from scratch.

Evernote Hacked

Evernote HackedIt seems that a company is not considered to be “cool” these days if it was not hacked. Evernote has “joined” this “esteemed club” of companies, where their cloud-based services have actually suffered a serious security breach over the weekend. This has caused Evernote to implement a service-wide password reset after attackers managed to gain access to user information.

Good to know that these compromised passwords accessed were “salted hashes”, and in plain English, would be a whole lot harder to crack compared to a plain text password. Some of the other user information that hackers had access to included user IDs as well as e-mail addresses. Having said that, Evernote users were required to reset their respective passwords just in case the attackers managed to recover passwords from the salted hashed list. The password reset will be applicable to all apps that were given access to Evernote accounts, too. Apple, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft bid Evernote welcome to the hacked club.

National Day of Unplugging encourages 24 hours of enlightenment

For a lot of us, having to spend 24 hours away from our smartphones and computers seems like a horrific nightmare. I mean, what are we? Cavemen? But that 24 hours could be a very enlightening experience, and that’s exactly what the National Day of Unplugging wants to encourage. Obviously, if you’re reading this post, you’re not taking part in the National Day of Unplugging, but perhaps in the future you will.

National Unplugging Day

The National Day of Unplugging took place on Friday. From sundown to sundown, from March 1st to March 2nd, people who have made the pledge to “unplug” will have to keep away from their smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers, TVs and more until sundown March 2nd. The movement was started by the Sabbath Manifesto, which encourages individuals to slow down their fast-paced lifestyle and just take a breather.

Thousands of people made a pledge to unplug for 24 hours. Many of them posted pictures on the NDU’s official website and stated that in their 24-hour tech-less break, they would do things that are meaningful and enlightening. Unsurprisingly, many pledges are going to spend their 24 hours bonding with their families. What is surprising is how technology has consumed so much of our lives that we need designated breaks, like NDU, to spend time with our families. Many other pledges have stated that they are going to rekindle strained relationships, reflect upon themselves, or just find peace.

The National Day of Unplugging makes us think about how much time we spend on technology (and how much of it is just wasted time spent on aimless browsing and online shopping), and how supposedly normal things, like spending time with loved ones, becomes collateral damage because of it. I’m not taking part of it this year, but it’s definitely something I’d consider doing next year. Along with NDU, the Sabbath Manifesto encourages connecting with loved ones, nurturing your health, getting outdoors more, avoiding commerce, lighting candles, drinking wine, eating bread, finding peace and silence, and giving back to others. Each of those principles are completely up to your interpretation, and all will improve your lifestyle.

Raspberry Pi Cake Does Bites Instead Of Bytes

Raspberry Pi Cake Does Bites Instead Of BytesThe Raspberry Pi chipset has certainly seen a successful launch ever since it rolled out some time ago, so what better way to celebrate its “birthday” than with a gigantic cake? Yes sir, as you can see above, the cake (image courtesy of Element 14) itself comes in the form of, you’ve guessed it, the Raspberry Pi itself. Thing is, we would have liked it to come with a dash of raspberry flavor which it unfortunately does not, but you can consider this to be a marvelous piece of modern confectionery.

The Raspberry Pi cake was specially baked and presented to Pete Lomas of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Andrew Robinson (the creator of PiFace) at the Embedded World conference in Nuremberg, Germany. I would definitely love to sink my teeth into this. You know, someone should celebrate each new version of the Android operating system by coming up with a cake that resembles the dessert name, or at least the dessert itself in the form of an Android mascot. How about opening up a geek-themed bakery?

Bing Maps Gets New World Imagery

Bing Maps Gets New World ImageryThe folks over at Microsoft have just upgraded Bing Maps, this time around throwing a whole lot more images than hopefully you will have time to go through, and there is no word on just how large the update file’s size is this time around, although it will comprise of a whopping 13,799,276 square kilometers of high resolution satellite shots. Those who are wondering what lurks beneath the ocean too, will be able to enjoy a far more intimate view of the ocean floor.

The all new “straight down” photos will provide the base map with a resolution of 15 meters per pixel, and when Microsoft decided to throw in bathymetric imagery that changes the ocean’s hue depending on its depth, you have got quite the looker here for curious eyes and minds. The Bing Maps update will not have that many clouds too, so that you can see more of the earth instead of waking up your craving for cotton candy. Bing Maps is proud to cover the whole of the US, in addition to 90% of Western Europe, thanks to images shot from aircraft. [Press Release]
