Chrome Delivers Voice Recognition Capability To The Internet

Chrome Delivers Voice Recognition Capability To The InternetIf you deal with web applications, or are currently looking into such an endeavor, I think you would be stoked to hear that today’s Chrome stable release will introduce support for the Web Speech API that was originally discussed in January, where it will allow developers to take advantage of speech recognition capabilities into their web apps. Just in case you want to get a better idea on how integrated voice recognition in a web app would work and look like, there is this particular demonstration that should pique your attention.

The demonstration would show just how you can speak to the web app in order to compose an email from scratch, now how about that? Apart from that, today’s release will also do away with the silent extension installs in Chrome for Windows. There is one very good reason for doing to – this ensures that Chrome will remain fast and safe to use, making sure that your consent is required for every extension that is about to be installed on your computer. The auto-update feature would mean you need not actively seek out the update, as these enhancements will arrive as the release rolls out. Bear in mind that you need Chrome version 25 or later for this voice recognition API to work.

Every Reason Not to Buy the Google Chromebook Pixel

Google just showed off a dumb new thing: an expensive laptop that pairs the gorgeous screen, capable components, and design of a MacBook Pro with the diluted, web-based Chrome OS. It makes no sense. Don’t buy one. More »

Microsoft Considered ‘Cool’ Again By Young Adults

Microsoft Considered Cool Again By Young Adults

If you would have told me a few years ago teens would no longer consider Apple to be cool in 2013, I wouldn’t believe you. If you followed that up by saying Microsoft would then be considered cool by teens, I would have called you a damn liar right in your no-good liar face. But that’s exactly what a recently published poll is reporting.

The poll was conducted by an organization that knows all about being cool, Reuters, which shows around 50% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 believe Microsoft is cooler when compared to the Microsoft of 2012. Unfortunately, Microsoft can’t officially claim itself to be the coolest tech company as 70% of Americans in the same age range believe Google’s Android OS has gotten cooler over the past year, while only 60% consider Apple to have gotten cooler over the past year.

Reuters believes the reason why young adults believe Microsoft to be cooler nowadays is due to its numerous marketing campaigns revolving around its Microsoft Surface tablets. In addition to that, Microsoft’s Xbox and Kinect also helped in considering the company to be cool.

Google Chromebook Pixel High-End Laptop Launched

Google Chromebook Pixel High End Laptop Launched
Google just announced its new high-end computer called Chromebook Pixel, which is aimed at “everyone” (including the “enthusiast” market), and we got a chance to check it out this morning. If you are unfamiliar with Google’s Chromebook products, they are computers built for “cloud” users who rely mainly on web-based applications and services. It has had some real retail success (Amazon) and has gained some traction in the education space as well. Previous Chromebooks laptops were primarily designed to be affordable, and that means making tough choices when it comes to hardware, especially in terms of chassis materials and display quality. The Chromebook Pixel will change this, and this time again, Google has worked (hard) with Samsung to build this laptop computer. [Photo credit: Karsten Lemm (www.kalemm.com)]

Billboard Incorporates YouTube Viewership

Billboard Incorporates YouTube ViewershipYouTube views are now more valuable than ever before, as they have been incorporated into Billboard charts. This ought to see musicians take a more serious approach in seeing just how technology does wield a rather strong influence in the future of the music industry. To put it in a nutshell, YouTube views of a song will be placed on the same pedestal as that of digital downloads, physical sales, and streaming, amidst other metrics, in order to make sure just which song will rise up to the top in the US. If one were to apply this sort of metrics retro-actively, does this mean that Psy’s Gangnam Style would come up tops, with over 1 billion views?

Billboard, however, has its own strict rules where YouTube data is concerned, limiting it to “all official videos,” Vevo clips, and user-generated videos which use “authorized audio.” In plain English, legitimately used songs are the only ones to be included in the charts. I am quite sure that many a tech-savvy music enthusiast will finally heave a sigh of relief, as YouTube has turned into a place where more and more folks listen to music.

Chrome Launcher For Offline Apps Arrives On Windows Platform

Chrome Launcher For Offline Apps Arrives On Windows PlatformIf there is a single takeaway message from this post, it would be this. Listen very carefully, Google’s Chrome “app launcher” for offline browser apps will finally be landing on the Windows platform, although Mac and Linux users are required to play the patience card for a little bit longer. So far, Google has rolled out an early stage “app launcher” for its Chrome browser, where it will come with a container for browser-based apps which were specially designed to function offline.

This particular feature remained for a long time, a domain of Google’s Chromebooks that are manufactured by the likes of Samsung, HP, Lenovo and Acer. Google has described it to be “a dedicated home for your apps which makes them easy to open outside the browser.” Having been released yesterday in the Chrome developer channel for Windows, this particular launcher is also said to be available “soon” if you are a Mac or Linux user. You know what they say, good things come to those who wait, so a little bit of patience would be ideal in such a situation.

Facebook Says Sorry To 104-Year Old Marguerite Joseph Due To Age Restriction

Facebook Says Sorry To 104 Year Old Marguerite Joseph Due To Age RestrictionThe folks over at Facebook do seem to be involved in some sort of interesting human interactions lately, as we did cover the story on how police used Facebook to inform the tragic news of a son’s death to his mother. Having said that, this time around we have an egg fall flat on Facebook’s proverbial face, as a 104-year old Michigan grandmother, Marguerite Joseph, was unable to input her birthday due to an over age restriction.

Facebook has since stepped forward to issue an apology to this grandmother, as Marguerite needed to lie about her age when it comes to jumping aboard the social network bandwagon. An interview with Local 4 saw Marguerite Joseph’s granddaughter mention that Facebook did not allow her grandmother to list her actual age, as Facebook would change the birth year of 1908 to 1928. Guess she remained forever young at 99 on Facebook for the past two years, and Facebook spokesperson Andrew Noyes did mention, “We are working on a fix for this and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

Better late than never, no?
