Google Chromebooks For Education Program Now In 2,000 Schools

Google has been making quite the push to make its Chromebooks available to schools as they recently announced discounts for schools to pick up their own Chromebooks for $99 each until December 21. Today, Google is announcing 2,000 schools are using Chromebooks for Education around the world.

Google didn’t announce if its discount program had anything to do with the rise in Chromebooks being used in schools, but when you consider there were only 1,000 schools listed as using Chromebooks, then the math certainly adds up.

Along with today’s announcement, Google highlighted some of the schools that recently joined the Chromebooks for Education program that include Transylvania County Schools with 900 devices, St. Thomas Aquinas High School with 2,200 devices and Rocketship Education with 1,100 devices. If you’re currently attending any of those schools, you just received your shout-out for the day simply by helping your students learn with a Chromebook. You never see Apple give shout-outs for schools that buy their computers for their classrooms, do you?

Google AdWords Helped Man Get Hooked Up

Google AdWords Helped Man Get Hooked Up Most companies who want a decent shot at Internet advertising would surely have considered Google AdWords at one point or another, and but a Japanese man decided to think out of the box, and come up with an ad on Google AdWords to look for a girlfriend. I am quite sure that many other single guys out there might actually kick themselves in the rear end for not giving this a go in the first place, especially after said Japanese man managed to bring his date (out of 5 positive responses) out for a meal.

In a nutshell, this man posted the ad a couple of months after he broke up with his previous love, where he used a “job position” style in writing his ad, which goes something like, “I’m looking for a girlfriend: Age and occupation are irrelevant. Nature of job position: love. No experience necessary.” At least 5 ladies responded, and he decided to play the gentleman and run a ’first come first served’ basis, meeting up with whom he claims is a cute lady who is a wee bit older than him. No idea on whether wedding bells are in the pipeline or not, but it sure as heck seemed to be a rather good investment for his $27 Google AdWords, considering how much dating agencies charge for an ad.

Mega Search Engine Blocked

Mega Search Engine BlockedIt looks like Kim Dotcom is never too far removed from the news, as his recently launched file sharing website that is known as Mega ended up resembling its previous “relative”, so to speak, which was known as Megaupload and has already closed down. It seems that anonymous users have already launched a search engine which will index the numerous files uploaded to Mega, and theoretically, this would make it a whole lot easier to look for copyright-protected material.

In fact, it was earlier today, where the third party search engine was blocked by Dotcom, taking under 24 hours to do so after its existence was first reported online. The search engine, known as Mega-Search.me, is no longer available online. There was a message in French that is located on its home page, where according to Google Translate, says, “Due to a script developed by Mega to delete all files indexed in Mega-search, the engine is temporarily unavailable. A solution to overcome this problem will be made shortly.”

Looks like the quick response showed by Mega underlines the seriousness that Dotcom never exhibited in the past in making sure that no copyrighted material are made available for the masses.

$13,500 Bounty To Breach Mega

$13,500 Bounty To Breach MegaKim Dotcom has brashly put forward a $13,500 bounty that will be the reward for the first person who successfully breaks into his Mega system’s security. I guess that amount of cash will mean something to most people, but for someone of his stature and cash reserves, it surely does not reflect the kind of confidence (IMHO) in Mega’s security system, no? I wonder which enterprising hacker will walk away with the €10,000 bounty (which is roughly $13,500 after conversion), and from which country he/she is from.

This prize money was announced after Mega was criticized for its security procedures, and in a war of words, there was even a Mega blog post that pooh-poohed (some say valid) points which were raised by industry heavyweights such as Ars Technica and Forbes. At this point in time, Mega holds nearly 50 million files, which is a sizable achievement considering it was launched less than a fortnight ago. How soon do you think it will be before someone steps forward to claim the reward?

Eurora supercomputer cuts back on CO2 emissions with help of NVIDIA GPUs

The world obviously needs its supercomputers, but with a growing energy crisis, efficiency is becoming a big priority. The problem is that supercomputers require a lot of power, but that’s an issue Eurotech and NVIDIA are trying to solve in the new Eurora computer. Not only is this beast powerful, but NVIDIA has announced that it’s also breaking efficiency records for supercomputers.

Eurora1

In a NVIDIA Blog post, the company explains that Eurora managed to reach “3,150 megaflops per watt of sustained performance,” which just so happens to beat the efficiency of the highest-ranked supercomputer on the Green500 list by 26%. That isn’t bad at all, and it’s thanks to Eurotech’s Aurora hot water cooling system.

By using hot water cooling, the Eurora doesn’t need to be cooled by air conditioning, obviously saving on energy costs. NVIDIA describes the benefit of using hot water by pointing out that it can be “re-purposed to heat buildings or drive absorption chillers, and then returned back to the supercomputer at a cooler temperature.” The Eurora is equipped with 64 compute nodes, which are each made up of two Intel Xeon E5-series CPUs and two NVIDIA Tesla K20 GPU accelerators. Since the water cooling system allows Eurotech to save space in the Eurora, NVIDIA says it’s able to fit 256 CPUs and GPUs into a single rack.

While the water cooling system helped the Eurora meet its efficiency goals, it didn’t do all the work along. The Telsa K20 GPUs are also quite efficient too, with NVIDIA pointing out that they’re four times more efficient than x86 CPUs. The Eurora made its way to the Cineca supercomputer facility in Bologna, Italy this week, with NVIDIA and Eurotech predicting that it will save 2.5 million kilowatt hours and eliminate 1,500 tons of CO2 emissions over the course of its 5-year life. That, ladies and gentlemen, is one efficient machine.

Apple discontinuing Mac Pro in Europe starting March 1

Due to changes made to regulatory standards, Apple will be discontinuing the Mac Pro in Europe starting March 1. MacRumors received a copy of a note sent out to European distributors regarding the discontinuation of Apple’s tower computers, saying that the Mac Pros “are not compliant with Amendment 1 of regulation IEC 60950-1, Second Edition which becomes effective on this date.”

mac-pro-late-2010-2-slashgear-540x356

While the Mac Pro has been slowly dying off the past couple of years, due to lack of demand and what seems like no interest from Apple to give the series a big update, the discontinuation of the Mac Pro in Europe actually has nothing to do with this lack of demand from users. This only affects Europe and a few other surrounding nations, so Mac Pro sales will continue in all other countries as usual.

The new product certification standards in Europe appear to have something to do with a few internal components in the Mac Pro systems, such as power supply parts and various wiring. It’s currently unclear exactly which aspects of the Mac Pro line don’t meet regulatory standards, but any new Mac Pro systems will not be shipping over to Europe after March 1.

Resellers in Europe will be able to continue selling existing Mac Pro systems that have already shipped over, even if the March 1 date has passed, but starting at that point, no new shipments will be going to Europe. Apple has announced that a redesigned Mac Pro will come sometime this year after the company barely updated the line in June 2012 with outdated processors and no big improvements.

Facebook Gift Card Announced

Facebook Gift Card AnnouncedFacebook, a modern day technological success story, has fallen back onto old school marketing techniques when it comes to announcing the availability of Gift Cards which can be purchased online for a friend or relative living elsewhere. Basically, Facebook users will soon be able to gift their mates items from Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora, and Target, thanks to the introduction of the reusable gift card from Facebook.

How does it work? The premise is rather simple, really, where you first pick a gift for your friend from the Gift Cards & Digital category. Following that, choose a value and complete your purchase. Your friend be informed immediately about your gift, and checking their mail, they should see a Facebook Card in the mailbox not too long after. They can then take a quick trip to a nearby retailer that you have selected, and spend whatever credit is in there. Best of all is, Facebook Gift Cards are reusable, and each card can hold multiple gift balances, with individual balances dedicated to the associated retailer. Expect the ability to send a Facebook Card gift being made available in stages to folks living Stateside.

MacBook EFI Updates Bids Adieu To Battery Issues

macbook air review 03 hero MacBook EFI Updates Bids Adieu To Battery IssuesApple has released a bunch of firmware updates in order to fix a rare issue which plagued systems which rely on excessively used batteries, where it involved the affected device to be unable to boot up. This bunch of EFI firmware updates should bring an end to systems affected that will sometimes see the unexpected shut down or having the machine simply freeze.

Apple has long determined battery health via the number of charge cycles which said battery has gone through. A solitary charge cycle is a sum of partial charges which equates to one full charge, and has claimed that batteries ought to last anywhere from 300 to 1,000 charge cycles. Needless to say, Murphy has struck as a relatively rare issue in select systems resulted in a non-functional machine whenever the system detects that it has already passed the 1,000 charge cycles mark.

A trio of EFI firmware updates for the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook ought to fix this issue for good, and they can be obtained via the Software Update section, although you can also head towards these links: MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.5, MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.6 and MacBook Air SMC Update 1.8 and perform the updates manually yourself.

Google Forms Refreshed

google forms 640x378 Google Forms RefreshedHow has your Google Drive experience been so far? I have found it to be extremely useful when it comes to creating, storing and sharing data, and there is a whole slew of apps out there which will assist you in being more productive and on-the-go as well, ranging from making amendments to spreadsheets and to signing documents electronically. Having said that, Google has already refreshed their Google Forms platform, which did come in handy in the past to help you create questionnaires in a snap, while automatically collecting responses in a spreadsheet.

The new and refreshed Google Forms offers a “faster, cleaner, and more collaborative experience.” Similar to Docs, Sheets and Slides, you are now able to collaborate with other folks in real-time, where you and your colleagues are able to make modifications to the same form at any one time, and even chat on the side without having to leave the form. Expect the refreshed Google Forms to be introduced in the days to come, where you can create them straight from Google Sheets or Drive, or take the alternative route of installing the Chrome Web App so that you can work from your browser.
