Raspberry Pi Nears 1 Million MilestoneThe Raspberry Pi Foundation, the charity behind the ingenious Raspberry Pi single-board computer, is announcing that Element 14, a division under electronics company Premier Farnell, has already made and sold more than half a million Raspberry Pi units. This is interesting since Element 14 is just one of two official distributors. RS Electronics is also an official distributor.  (more…)

Neither have I, so for those of us who are in the dark, SurDoc prides itself in being a leader in cloud storage and document technologies. In fact, at CES this year, SurDoc has every intention to demonstrate their patented best-in-industry VisiDoc user interface, in addition to showcasing their TruPrivacy security technology to those who drop by their booth. Basically, TruPrivacy technology is a breakthrough development in cloud storage security technology, where users are said to be able to enjoy absolute privacy protection without increasing the costs of cloud storage.

In a nutshell, TruPrivacy would give consumers the peace of mind to use cloud-based storage, where hackers or any other unauthorized third-party like the government, industry associations, or even employees are able to gain access to your data within a cloud service provider. As part of a generous gesture to celebrate the recent launch of their TruPrivacy Technology, SurDoc will be offering free unlimited cloud storage for 1 year accounts until January 15, as long as you key in the code 2013CES at SurDoc.com. Mushkin Announces 960GB Chronos SSD

chronos dx Mushkin Announces 960GB Chronos SSDThe world of solid state drives (SSDs) continue to expand in terms of capacity and speed, and in the future, you will most probably find the classic hard drive being rendered obsolete – this is assuming that the price of flash memory will fall down to the level of hard drives, otherwise, there will always be the price vs performance issue to mull over. Mushkin intends to forge ahead with their latest 960GB Chronos solid-state drive that is tipped to ship from this month onwards.

You do not need a rocket scientist to tell you that a 960GB SSD is extremely rare in this day and age, and it will definitely cost you a bomb if you were to include it in your notebook. This is nearly double the storage capacity of a standard 2.5-inch form factor drive, and it will most probably target disk intensive applications like workstations and servers. The layperson is not going to fork out insane amounts of money for shaving off some seconds from their program loading sequence.

MISEETX Self-Contained PC

ctx pc MISEETX Self Contained PC[CES 2013] You know how certain ideas remain in the incubation box until it receives the correct form of catalyst to move forward? I guess you can say the same applies to the MISEETX, a self-contained PC-in-a-box device which in essence, is a diminutive computer that runs on an Intel Atom processor, carrying with it some amount of RAM and a tiny LCD display which is easily flipped open. Sounds like a slight improvement over the Raspberry Pi, does it not?

One thing about the MISEETX is this – it even comes with an integrated projector so that it can project a 800 x 478 pixel display on a suitable surface. The keyboard itself will hark back to one of the older peripherals back when the Palm Treo was part of the smartphone description, as a keyboard is also projected right in front of you via a different projector. Good luck getting used to that without any form of tactile feedback!

Apparently, the MISEETX has yet to hit the market despite being on parade at CES last year and this year as well, but the manufacturer, CTX Technologies, intends to strike a deal with a major player before selling that. Who is willing to step up to the plate and market the MISEETX as their own? A probable price of $600 for this would make me look for a tablet instead.

Kingston DataTraveler HyperX Predator 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 Flash Drive with keychain 640x436 Kingston Unveils 1TB DataTraveler HyperX Predator USB 3.0 Flash Drive[CES 2013] Flash drives come in all shapes and sizes, but if you’ve ever wanted a flash drive with a 1TB storage capacity and USB 3.0 connectivity and the speeds that it brings to the table, Kingston has such a device in their lineup called the DataTraveler HyperX Predator, which they are touting as the “world’s largest-capacitiy” USB 3.0 flash drive. What this means is that not only will you be able to read/write files from/onto it at speeds of 240MB/s and 160MB/s respectively, but you will be able to slip it into your pocket or attach it to a keychain as opposed to regular portable hard drives which might not be as pocket friendly. At flash drive will also be made from zinc alloy metal which should add a bit to its durability and as expected, it will be USB 2.0 backwards compatible. Unfortunately at the moment only the 512GB model is available and Kingston expects the 1TB model to be made available later on in the year, and considering that the 512GB model is retailing for $1,750, we’d hate to think just how much the 1TB model will cost. Probably not for everyone but hey, we’re sure that there will be some who are willing to pay for the convenience and slight novelty factor. [Press release]

NPD: 2013 Will Mark The Year When Tablet Shipments Overtake Notebooks

Every year that passes, we hear of tablet sales getting closer and closer to computer sales as analysts have been speculating for some time now one day, the world will go tablet-crazy and prefer them to computers. Before you take that bit of info to heart and decide to proclaim your love for your computer, you may want to hear what the NPD has to report today.

According to NPD, this year seems to be on track to be the year where tablet shipments will overtake notebooks. In total, NPD is estimating tablet shipments to reach over 240 million units worldwide while notebooks are projected to reach 207 million shipments this year.

A few weeks ago, we published a report by analytics firm Flurry that saw Christmas Day 2012 being a record-breaking day for Tablet and Smartphone activations with a 332 percent increase compared to the average amount of activations between December 1 and December 20. Judging by that report, it looks as though today’s news may not be so far fetched.

Microsoft Sells 60M Windows 8 Licenses

[CES 2013] Regardless if you like the direction Microsoft took Windows with its Windows 8 OS, it seems the company is celebrating a milestone today as Windows 8 has sold 60 million licenses.

Unfortunatley, with today’s news, Microsoft didn’t disclose just how many of those licenses are based on consumers purchasing Windows 8 or how were sold in bulk to vendors and enterprises, but the Windows blog team had the following to share in regards with today’s news:

At the 11th Annual J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES 2013 today, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller announced that Windows 8 has sold 60 million licenses to date. This represents the cumulative sales of Windows 8 including both upgrades and sales to OEMs for new devices. This is a similar sales trajectory that we saw with Windows 7.

We have seen a significant increase in the number of Windows 8 certified systems since general availability at the end of October. There are now more than 1,700 certified systems for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

In addition to the news of 60 million Windows 8 licenses being sold, Microsoft is also seeing “strong growth” in the amount of developers building for the platform. According to Microsoft, over 100 million applications have been downloaded from the Windows Store after two months of being available to the public.

Valve Teams Up With Xi3 For Steam-Powered ‘Piston’ PC

Valve Teams Up With Xi3 For Steam Powered Piston PC

[CES 2013] We’ve been hearing whispers of Valve potentially entering the console market with a console of their own for months now, especially after their release of their Big Picture Mode. This year’s CES seems to have been the perfect place for them to finally unveil what they’ve been working on, which turns out it isn’t a console, but instead, a PC.

Valve has partnered up with Xi3 to reveal their prototype called “Piston.” The mini-PC is being built with Steam and Big Picture Mode in mind, but both companies were tight-lipped in regards to its specs or any other details regarding the project. What they did decide to share was the Piston PC will have 1TB of internal storage and will be based on Xi3′s X7a modular PC.

Seeing as the Piston is expected to be a mini-PC, you could technically consider this console-like as it could easily be brought into the living room for some gaming good times. Although we’re hesitant to see just how many non-gamers decide to drag this into their living rooms after it’s released.
