NVIDIA Grid Announced

nvidia grid NVIDIA Grid Announced[CES 2013] NVIDIA is not quite done with their press conference just yet, and this time we are looking at the birth of Skynet. No, we’re kidding, it would be the rise of cloud computing, and over the course of time, the infrastructure cost has been lowered dramatically recently. Gamers do ask themselves how come cloud computing did not bring that much benefit in terms of gaming, but things look set to change with the introduction of NVIDIA Grid. Basically, the NVIDIA Grid is a rack that is packed full of GPUs, and has been equated to be roughly the equivalent of 700 Xbox 360s where processing power is concerned.

During the demonstration, it was shown that the user interface has been rendered in the cloud (similar to what Vudu offers), which is great since clients are then able to be ported in a jiffy. Some product pimpin’ was done where LG’s Smart TV saw the NVIDIA Grid client ported over, where the TV then ran games onver the cloud in a fluid manner. Granted, this is just a side-scroller, but it is impressive enough. Following that, an Android client that ran NVIDIA Grid showed the game where the gamer last left it, meaning the client’s hardware does not matter any more since all it does is stream data back and forth.

NVIDIA is working to grow their list of partners for the NVIDIA Grid system, and we do look forward to see how widespread NVIDIA Grid’s adoption rate would be.

HP Pavilion 20xi to 27xi IPS LCD Monitors

hp 2401 xi 04 640x424 HP Pavilion 20xi to 27xi IPS LCD Monitors

CES 2013] The HP Pavilion line has always been about “bang for the buck”, so introducing IPS displays in that line-up makes sense. Most of the models (22xi, 23xi, 25xi and 27xi) feature a 1080p resolution, but the smallest 20xi does not (it tops at 1600×900), and it’s probably OK for a mid-range 20″ monitor. All of them offer a variety of input options, namely VGA, HDMI, DVI-D.

The IPS is the star of the show here, because if it wasn’t for that special detail, the rest of the specifications aren’t out of the ordinary, and the design itself is decent, but not fantastic either. That said, check the prices: the 20xi will cost $129.99 and the 27xi will sell for an MSRP of $339.99 which seems to land  right in the normal price range (street price) for this type of IPS monitors. What do you think? What’s your monitor brand of choice these days?

HP Envy 27-inch Monitor

hp envy 27 monitor 04 640x424 HP Envy 27 inch Monitor[CES 2013] At CES 2013 HP is launching a new 27″ LCD IPS monitor under the Envy brand. The HP Envy 27″ display has been designed to look good on a desk, and one of the primary objectives of the designers was to make the bezels very thin. It’s hard to see on the photos, but if you’re not familiar with the IPS display technology, it is a type of LCD display which has been optimized for having great view angles and color reproduction. For example, mobile devices like the iPad use an IPS display. At the moment, this is one of the best technology available for large displays as OLED is simple too expensive at that size. (more…)

HP U160 15.6-inch LED Backlit Portable Monitor

up u160 mobile monitor 02 640x424 HP U160 15.6 inch LED Backlit Portable Monitor

[CES 2013] The HP U160 is a USB powered notebook monitor that can be folded inside a very practical case which acts as a stand when unfolded. The thin, light and elegant body weighs only 3.4 pounds and is only 1.02 inches thick.

The HP U160 looks like the perfect monitor to have when on-the-go, and during the briefing with HP, we thought that it could be a useful gadget to bring for our trips to international conferences like CES, MWC or CEATEC, to increase our productivity. The 15.6 inch LCD display features 1366×768 resolution, 16:9 ratio and is powered via USB 2.0 or above. When we saw it in action, the responsiveness was good and the framerate was fluid.

The u160 will be available in January for only $179 (starting price), I am sure that the attractive price and design will make it one of the sought-after device for road warriors. Last but not least, the device is ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it is quite eco-friendly: it is made with arsenic free glass and BFR/PVC free plastics and mercury-free LED backlighting.

HP ProDisplay Series Means Business

hp prodisplay ces2012 02 640x424 HP ProDisplay Series Means Business[CES 2013] The thing with computers is that you need a screen, and when it comes to business, companies want something that is cost-effective, predictable and easy to maintain. That’s what HP is aiming for with this HP ProDisplay line of monitors that feature four models: P191 (18.5″), P201m (20″) and P221 (21.5″). Seriously, call me a naive consumer, but I don’t really understand why there is a need for four models to cover a price range of $129 to $179 and size variations that seem relatively small.

In any case, CTOs may find it comforting that while these monitors won’t win any design awards, they have plenty of “Green” labels, including: Energy Star, EPEAT Gold, BFR/PVC-Free, Arsenic Free and Mercury-free LED. Well, there’s nothing wrong with doing business without polluting (too much), right?

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook To Get Full HD Display (Rumor)

dell xps 13 review disp 1 20 Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook To Get Full HD Display (Rumor)[CES 2013] Dell does not seem to be too interested in making a splash for itself this CES, but this does not mean that they have nothing interesting up their sleeves. In fact, there are whispers going around that Dell’s XPS 13 Ultrabook will be on the receiving end of a 1080p display upgrade before January is over. This does sound like a minor upgrade that has been a long time in coming, especially when you consider how the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook was unveiled at the previous edition of CES.

Good to know that the now mediocre 1,366 x 768 display on the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook will soon be a thing of the past, assuming that this particular rumor is proven to be true. Perhaps Dell might take into consideration that the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook lacks an SD memory card reader, No official confirmation on this yet, and even if it were proven to be true, it remains to be seen how much the end user would need to fork out to bring one of these bad boys home.

Lenovo Yoga 11S At CES 2013

lenovo yoga 11s 1 Lenovo Yoga 11S At CES 2013[CES 2013] So the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 has just gotten a revamp in time for CES 2013, and here we are at the CES Unveiled showfloor with the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11S, where it will carry Windows 8 as the operating system of choice this time around. One of the main advantages of the IdeaPad Yoga 11S would be to bring it closer to the iPad as well as other notable Android-powered tablets in the market when its screen is folded all the way to transform it into a tablet mode.

Definitely one of the more creative methods of sharing your video or presentations amongst friends or colleagues, and while this is not the definitive tablet experience as we spent some time with it, it does a passable impersonation. At least those long haul flights need not be that boring any more, and you also have more space to use it even when flying cattle, er, economy class. We had the orange colored model to play with, and you can pick up this bad boy sometime later this June from $799 onwards, where it will run on an Intel Core i5 low-voltage processor with a display resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels.

Seagate Central Storage System

seagate Central Seagate Central Storage SystemAs we switch our lives to the digital world, more and more people would like to have a central repository for their content. Solutions have existed for some time, but for a while, getting a NAS and setting it up properly was out of the reach of the lay person who would rather spend time playing with the tech, than spend time setting it up. To be fair, nobody likes to tinker with router settings – especially when the network works just fine.

Seagate Central is a replacement for the GoFlex Home storage device from last year. It features a faster processor (dual-core) and has more memory (256MB). Just like other Seagate products, this one is optimized for DLNA (for content streaming over the home network) and can have up to 4TB of storage. Interestingly, it has been design to sit next to the Television, like a small set top box. (more…)
