Microsoft’s 2012

A lot of companies had a big year – Apple released the highly anticipated iPad mini and iPhone 5, Samsung found a smashing success in the Galaxy S III, Nintendo launched the Wii U, while Google delivered Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and released a number of impressive Nexus devices. Despite all of that, Microsoft arguably had a bigger year than all of them. 2012 was huge with Microsoft, with the release of Windows 8, Microsoft Surface, and Windows Phone 8 all happening in a high-energy span of just a few weeks. It wasn’t so much that these new operating systems and products were released this year either, but rather the fact that Microsoft was taking so many risks with the launch of each and every one.

As the follow up to the wildly successful and much-loved Windows 7, Windows 8 made plenty of enemies before it even released. This was thanks to the consumer preview that had every chattering well before Windows 8′s launch. Throughout all of 2012, we were hearing about what people liked and what they hated about Windows 8, with debate springing up all over the place and anticipation for Microsoft’s new version of the Windows OS riding high.

Then, at the end of October, it was finally time to launch the beast. Windows 8 was released to the world on October 26, garnering plenty of criticism and praise alike. We liked Windows 8 quite a bit, and while it isn’t perfect, we’re excited to see what Microsoft does with this news direction for the OS in the future. Others didn’t exactly share our enthusiasm though, bemoaning the new user interface at every chance. Some PC manufacturers even blamed perceived low demand for Windows 8 for their lagging sales, so Microsoft definitely made some enemies by releasing this very different version of Windows.

Whether you like it or not, that doesn’t change the fact that we saw some really impressive Windows 8 machines springing up shortly after launch. The Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 was one of them, leaving Windows RT in the dust in favor of the fully featured Windows 8 and a sporting a 360-degree hinge that lets you fold the laptop into all kinds of orientations. The Samsung ATIV Smart PC is another Windows 8 device worth checking out, though in a rather strange turn of events, we were only able to review half of it. Acer has been putting out some solid Windows 8 products as well, launching the attractive Aspire 7600U All-in-One and the excellent Aspire S7 ultrabook. In other words, it’s been a good few months for those who are enthusiastic about Windows 8 and want some good hardware to run it on.

Despite all of the doom and gloom surrounding Windows 8, the simple fact of the matter is that we won’t know just how well it’s doing with consumers for a while yet. Microsoft announced a little earlier in the year that it had sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses, which certainly doesn’t seem to mesh with the idea that Windows 8 is off to a bad start, but there are plenty of retailers and PC partners who are quick to say that Windows 8 has been underperforming.

Make no mistake, Microsoft changed a lot with Windows 8. While the Windows we’re used to is still mostly intact, it’s hiding behind an all new Start screen, which serves as a replacement to the Start menu that was introduced with the release of Windows 95 all those years ago. Windows 8 signals an entirely new direction for the Windows brand, but Microsoft embraced that change as a company, revealing an all-new logo in 2012. This new logo is a lot cleaner than the old one (some might say “boring” rather than “cleaner”), featuring the live tiles that have been so controversial among lifelong Windows users. With this new logo, Microsoft showed us that it’s ready for an all-new era of Windows.

Of course, 2012 wasn’t all about Windows 8. Microsoft launched its new Surface tablet alongside Windows 8, and with it comes Windows RT. In our review, we declared that Surface was a solid start for Microsoft’s tablet business, though there may be a few sticking points with consumers. We won’t really get to see what Microsoft can do in the tablet space until the Surface Pro launches next month, but unfortunately, Surface Pro still doesn’t have a solid release date despite its January 2013 launch window.

In the meantime, Surface has been causing some controversy of its own. Some love it, some can’t stand it, and we’ve heard plenty of rumors that claimed Microsoft was scaling back on Surface production. Those rumors implied that Surface wasn’t as big a hit as Microsoft was hoping for, but then the company surprised us all by announcing that it had ramped up Surface production and would be offering it through a number of third party retailers. Not only that, but it also announced that a number of the temporary retail stores it had opened for the holiday season would become permanent fixtures, so at least in that respect, it would appear that Microsoft has found success.

While Surface will need some time to grow into a tablet that can challenge the likes of the iPad and the significant number of quality Android tablets, there was one new Microsoft release in 2012 that everyone was excited for: Windows Phone 8. Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform had failed in the past to capture a sizable portion of the smartphone market, so Microsoft poured a lot of resources into Windows Phone 8.

That effort shows, too. In our review of the mobile operating system, we said that Windows Phone 8 was much improved over previous installments, and that it was a mobile OS that everyone – Windows Phone veteran or otherwise – could enjoy. However, we also pointed out that regardless of how good Windows Phone 8 is, it’s quality hardware that will ultimately bring people to the platform.

Windows Phone 8 is still very young, but already we’re seeing a bunch of really solid WP8 devices. HTC is entirely on board with the platform, releasing the Windows Phone 8S and Windows Phone 8X. Nokia is naturally there too, giving us plenty of handsets to get excited about with the Lumia 920 and Lumia 810. It’s too early to tell if Windows Phone 8 can perform well enough to keep Apple and Google on their toes, but if these early handsets are any indication, then the future is bright indeed.

heero-580x400

In fact, if there’s one thing Microsoft’s 2012 encourages, it’s looking toward the future. Windows 8 and Surface may be off a relatively shaky start, but they lay the groundwork for some truly exciting releases in the future. On the other hand, Windows Phone 8 is off to a great start, but good initial reaction doesn’t mean anything if the OS can’t perform in the long run. Ultimately, Microsoft set the stage for years to come in 2012, so even though it’s difficult for us to label the year as a success or failure, we should be seeing some very interesting things as time goes on.

The ViVAX Laptop Case Is As Rugged As It Gets

macbook Case The ViVAX Laptop Case Is As Rugged As It GetsWhile most laptop bags are good enough at protecting our laptops from slight bumps and short drops, they might not be as adequate if you needed to bring your laptop into rough terrain where there’s a good chance your bags could be dropped onto rocks or soaked in water. If you’re after such protection for your laptop then you might be interested in the ViVAX Kickstarter project. Made in Italy, as you can see in the image above, the ViVAX laptop case is shaped like a suitcase and is reminiscent of those suitcases where spies and government agents carry in movies.

Its creators claim that the case is crushproof, waterproof, shockproof and even dirtproof. This is thanks to the materials used, such as a waterproof external shell and a shockproof techno-polymer interior, with the shell supposedly being of military origin used to transport various sensitive equipment in all sorts of climatic conditions. To add to its waterproof-ness, the case has a Neoseal rubber seal which conforms to NATO standards with regards to being waterproof and even unsinkable. The ViVAX case is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter and a pledge of £59 will net you the case upon successful funding. Even if you don’t require all its protection, it looks pretty cool and its asking price seems pretty reasonable. Learn more about the ViVAX case or pledge a donation on its Kickstarter page.

Google Received 50 Million URL Removal Requests In 2012

google logo Google Received 50 Million URL Removal Requests In 2012Now that we are at the end of 2012, it makes perfect sense to do a recap of all that has happened in the year, taking stock of the situation and what not. We did bring you a story about how Google removed a fair number (2 billion!) of fake views from YouTube, and here we are with the grand total of URL removal requests for the entire year – numbering approximately 50 million thereabouts. It was just in May that Google was on the receiving end of around 1.2 million URL removal requests each month, so to hit a grand total of 50 million for the entire year of 2012 means that plenty more requests were sent out in the second half of the year.

Bear in mind that this 50 million figure is not official from Google, but rather, it is some mathematics and arcane magic employed by the good people over at TorrentFreak to arrive at the magical 51,395,353 mark. The numbers also show that the amount of requests has continued its upward spiral. The Recording Industry Association of America is touted to be the primary source for these requests, which should not come across as a surprise, really.

s21h S21H Android Stick PC Has 2GB RAMWho would have thought that advancements made in the semiconductor industry has seen the processing power of a decent computer crammed into something as small as a USB stick? Well, that is where we are at today, and the S21H is a prime example of such development in the world of Android-powered TV sticks. What makes the S21H special from the rest is the integration of a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor as well as 2GB RAM for approximately $70, where it is also said to come with 8GB of internal memory.

Other hardware specifications of the S21H Android stick PC include 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, and a full-sized USB 2.0 port, although we would have liked to see USB 3.0 in the pipeline instead. An HDMI connector is located on one end, letting you plug the stick straight into a TV or monitor, allowing you to run Android apps on a large display. It is also nice to know that Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean comes with the S21H right out of the box.

Windows 8 ‘Complaints App Done Away With

windows8 complaints Windows 8 ‘Complaints App Done Away WithIt was not too long ago (a matter of weeks, in fact) that there was a new and free Windows 8 app which was given the nod of approval by the folks over at Microsoft to publish it on the Windows Store. This app was known as the Windows 8 Complaints app, where its main purpose of existence was to enable folks to write and share their concerns and problems that they have run into with Microsoft’s most recent operating system for the PC platform. Basically, it will allow you to post your complaints and read/listen to the complaints of others.

It seems that the Windows 8 Complaints app is no more, as it cannot be downloaded from the Windows Store. Not only that, the app’s page has also been removed, although there is still a cached page hanging around somewhere for you to view. Microsoft has yet to get back to the masses as to the reasons behind the removal of the Windows 8 Complaints app, what do you think?

Early Apple Computer And Tablet Designs Reveal The iMac And iPad That Might Have Been

apple01

Apple worked closely with Frogdesign during the eighties, creating Apple’s early design language and charting the visual path of Apple computers from the Apple IIc to the Macintosh. Frogdesign founder Hartmut Esslinger’s fingerprints are all over those early, iconic designs, and in a new book called Design Forward, he reveals some concepts for Apple computers and tablets that never made it to market, but that would seem perfectly at home in evolutionary charts depicting the design history of the iPad, iMac and other modern Apple products.

Esslinger’s designs show off a tablet-type device called the “macphone” from 1984, which boasts a corded handset for calling as well as a stylus-based touchscreen for handwritten text entry and a software keyboard, which in some ways resembles the early Newton Apple tablet. Another, the “tablet mac” from 1982, depicts a more simple slate, which can support a corded keyboard for text entry and an external floppy disk drive that’s actually much bulkier than the device itself. These designs show that Apple was thinking about ways to make the computer a tablet long before it introduced the iPad in 2010.

There are also computers inspired by Sony, a company whose industrial design tastes Steve Jobs famously admired, as well as a concept called the “baby mac” from 1985 that has all the hallmarks of later iMacs in a package with a tilting base and low profile keyboard. Some of these concepts are a little more far out, like a two-screen workstation with a tower in the middle, but overall, it’s clear from these designs that Esslinger and Frogdesign didn’t just define the early Apple aesthetic, but also set the stage for later innovations to come.

MacBook Air And MacBook Pro Rumored For Refresh In June 2013

screen shot 2012 12 28 at 1 03 19 am 640x249 MacBook Air And MacBook Pro Rumored For Refresh In June 2013If you’re thinking about picking up a new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro laptop for yourself, you might be interested to learn that according to a report by Digitimes, they claim that Apple will be refreshing both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in June 2013. Given that June is usually the time of the year that Apple holds its Worldwide Developers Conference, we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple took that opportunity to unveil any possible MacBook refreshes.

These refreshes are said to be pretty much standard fare, so don’t expect to see any major redesigns. Instead Digitimes is claiming that as far as the MacBook Air is concerned, the refreshed models are expected to include new processors, although they did not state as to what sort of specifications we could be looking at. They also suggested that MacBook Air prices could see a drop ahead of the refresh although we have to admit this is not Apple’s typical strategy. The report also claims that Apple has already issued requests to their supply chain partners to get ready to start building these refresh laptops.
