Lavi S21i iMac Clone

Here we are with yet another another clone from the world’s factory, China. This time around, we are presented with something that will surely rile the feathers of them Apple fanboys – I am referring to the Lavi S21i that clearly resembles the upcoming iMac. Cool, no? A clone of a device that has yet to hit the market, surely this is productivity at its very best. Just what does the Lavi S21i bring to the table? For starters, we have a 21.5-inch display at 1920×1080 resolution, where it will be accompanied by 4GB RAM and (we’re not quite sure yet) Windows 7 or Windows 8.

You will be able to opt from a couple of processor options – a 3.3GHz Intel i3 dual-core CPU or a 2.9GHz Intel i5 quad-core CPU. Apart from that, there is also a choice of a 500GB hard drive (5400 rpm) or a 128GB SSD. Sporting an aluminum enclosure, its thinnest point measures a mere 0.9cm thin, which is just 4mm thicker than Apple’s new iMac. Other hardware specifications include an integrated HD camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, a quartet of USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port and a LAN port.

A Security Prescription for the Holiday Shopping Season

In anticipation of a greater holiday season this year, many retailers are now kicking off their sales a few days early. According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend about 4.1 percent more this holiday season than last.

Unfortunately, it’s not just retailers who will be using unbelievable offers to lure consumers into parting with their hard-earned cash on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Mobile Tuesday or in the days that precede them. Cybercriminals are also hard at work to offer the most enticing online scams.  And if you don’t take the necessary online precautions, your holiday cheer could come to a screeching halt.

Whether you end up shopping now or later, you’ll want to check this list of recommendations that can help you stay clear of some typical and not so typical holiday security threats. (more…)

Mac Mini Review: Apple’s Tiny Computer Is Finally Worth Your Time

The Mac Mini has always been that runt you might buy if you couldn’t afford any other Apple computer. Which is to say: it was the Apple computer you bought when you should’ve picked up a budget Dell or something. No longer. The 2012 model is a fantastic, affordable, and small. More »

Microsoft may have inadvertently given Windows 8 pirates a working activation key

Back in early August, the final copy of Windows 8 was leaked online which we assume was much to the dismay of Microsoft. Pirates got ahold of the copy and distributed it, but thanks to Microsoft’s activation technology, the pirates had yet to figure out a way to fully activate the operating system. Instead pirates had to rely on third party KMS servers that would activate a copy for 6 months before it was required to be reactivated again. Not a huge deal but not exactly elegant, nor was it ideal either. Now thanks to what appears to be a slip up by Microsoft, these pirates have managed to find a way to fully activate Windows 8 without having to reactivate it again every 6 months.

It seems that Microsoft is giving away a free Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 users, an offer that is expected to run until January 31st 2013, and it looks like the pirates have discovered that the key used to upgrade Media Center will at the same time fully activate a pirated copy of Windows 8! According to the folks at The Verge who tried it out on a test machine, this procedure works and they have since reached out to Microsoft for a comment on the matter. We can only assume that Microsoft will be hurrying to patch this up ASAP, but in the meantime it looks like the pirates will be getting away scot-free.

Mozilla Firefox 17 Released, Drops Leopard Support

Mozilla has just rolled out Firefox 17, their popular web browser which surprisingly, was released just a month after Firefox 16 rolled out. Just what kind of enhancements can we expect to see in Mozilla Firefox 17? Well, the additions are said to be rather lightweight in nature, where Mozilla threw in a Social API and support for Facebook Messenger integration, in addition to the spanking new click-to-play feature that prevents select plugins from firing up without express permission from the user. Apart from that, it is said to carry approximately 20 performance improvements that hopefully, will ensure Firefox is capable of outrunning the competition in terms of browser speed.

Bear in mind that Mozilla Firefox 17 will drop OS X 10.5 Leopard support. Not exactly a big loss, considering how Leopard rolled out half a dozen years ago, being the last version of Apple’s OS X operating system to support legacy PowerPC Macs. Mozilla took this step of faith to “free up resources for new Mac features like Native Full Screen support and new Mac accessibility tools.”

Facebook Introduces HTTPS Connection In US

When it comes to the Internet, security is a very big issue – after all, no one would like to have their personal details accessed all too easily, right? Facebook, the world’s most popular social network at this point in time, intends to offer a more secure Facebook experience for its US users, and this is done by introducing an additional layer of security by providing a more secure Internet connection. From this week onward, Facebook users who access its website will have to go through a HTTPS connection, which is an Internet protocol that banks as well as other security sensitive websites commonly use.

Due to the added layer of security that has been integrated, the experience will be slowed down as it is not as fast as HTTP. This is due to the HTTPS protocol encrypting your data, while verifying a site’s certificates without having to cache information on your computer. Before this compulsory “upgrade”, individual users were able to select for themselves whether to enable HTTPS connections for their Facebook account or not, but it seems to have ended up as a default setting now. Other Facebook users worldwide will also experience a HTTPS switch sometime down the road.

Skype Gift Cards Helps Folks Keep In Touch

Sure, using Skype to keep in touch with family and friends has been one of the more popular ways since the explosion of VoIP programs, but we do know that not everyone knows how to use Skype on a computer to carry out Skype-to-Skype conversations, so sometimes, if you want to keep in touch with family and friends far and near over their mobile phones or landlines, you can always use Skype Credit to make that call. Since the Yuletide season is upon us very, very soon (you would be surprised to see just how fast time creeps up on you), why not give a gift that is practical – and yet won’t be frittered away over a bottle of booze?

I’m referring to Skype Gift Cards here, where the U.S., Skype Gift Cards will be available at select retail locations including Microsoft Stores, Target and OfficeMax. You can also opt to pick up e-Gift Cards which can be delivered online to your friends and family, thanks to the Skype Shop and on Skype’s Facebook page from $10 onward.
