Facebook And Yahoo To Link Up?

Facebook logoHere is yet another rumor that is making its way around the Internet – that social networking giant Facebook as well as Internet search pioneer Yahoo are looking to link up in a possible partnership. According to the Sunday Telegraph, both of these companies could eventually merge their best traits when it comes to search, and the possibility of that could help win some market share from the almighty Google. So, do you think that there is enough meat in the rumor to confirm that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg did discuss about both of their respective companies working together on a search engine?

Select industry watchers think otherwise, as it is quite likely that Microsoft is not going to allow Yahoo to squirm its way out of its long-term search contract. On the other hand, Mayer and Sandberg were former colleagues at Google, and they would definitely be able to know as well as understand just the kind of leverage that search can deliver in order to super-charge a business. We do hope that more sniffing can be done to unearth additional information concerning the situation.

Verizon Clamps Down On Online Piracy, To Reduce Browsing Speeds

US-based Verizon does not look on too kindly on those who download stuff illegally, otherwise known as pirates (digital ones, that is, as these folks probably do not have their sea legs with them), considering how they take advantage of technologies such as BitTorrent in order to steal copyrighted material. It seems that Verizon will first issue a warning to repeat offenders via email and voicemail, and if said offender fails to turn from his or her wayward behavior, then Verizon will crank things up a notch by restricting, or in other words, to “throttle” their Internet connection speeds.

As for Time Warner Cable, another US internet service provider (ISP), they will take a softer approach in terms of tackling piracy by using pop-up warnings in order to deter repeat offenders. I guess that approach would not work too well, as nothing is quite as frustrating as having your speed throttled that you would not want to download stuff illegally any more. The other three major US ISPs, AT&T, Cablevision, and Comcast, too, will work together to bear down on illegal downloading as well as sharing of copyrighted material.

Vudu Offers 1080p Video Streaming

It is said that HDX video has long been a trademark for the Vudu service for some time already, especially when it rolled out streaming and Vudu-to-go downloads for PCs last year which were limited to standard definition. Good to know that progress has been thrown into the mix recently, where the service will now deliver not only 720p HDX video, but 1080p HDX video as well over the web. Your eyes might make that jig of joy, but what you see on the PC does not mean that your ears will rejoice equally since it appears to be limited to stereo audio at the moment, and for folks who have already run some tests on it, they realized that they could not access the Flash streams on a phone or tablet.

All you need to do if you are interested is this, just log into the website and give it a go. Have you already given it a go, and how do you find it so far? Do bear in mind that you would need a decent Internet speed at the very minimum in order to enjoy Full HD video on Vudu, in addition to an HDCP-compliant display, of course.

Fujifilm Looks To 1TB Disc In The Future

So, you think that your Blu-ray disc drive is the bomb, and you have saved your fair share of video and audio content on a library of Blu-ray discs? Well, Fujifilm has some news for you – they are right now working on a new recording method for optical discs through the use of two-photon absorption in order to generate heat. This method is capable of realizing a recording density of 25 Gbytes per layer, which is right now the equivalent to the recording density of Blu-ray Disc (BD), in addition to 20 layers per side of a disc. To put it in plain English assuming one’s mental math is in order, it is theoretically possible to churn out a double-sided optical disc with a 1TB storage capacity, and commercialization of this disc is expected to kick off in three years’ time.

Not only that, this new recording method is said to carry a potential to realize a 15Tbyte disc sometime down the road, and just in case you were wondering how expensive this is going to cost, fret not – it is said to cost as little as a magnetic tape, now how about that? Downloading sprees, ahoy!

Microsoft Outlook 2013 Supports Exchange Active Sync

It was not too long ago that Microsoft made an announcement concerning their upcoming Outlook 2013 email client which is said to introduce additional support for the Internet Message Access Protocol, which is known as IMAP for short. Well, here is yet another announcement from the software giant that Outlook 2013 will also deliver support for Exchange Active Sync, which should be good news for folks who use Outlook as their primary email client all this while. The latest post on the official Outlook blog saw Microsoft state that Outlook 2013 will no longer require the older version of the Outlook Connector protocol in order to sync up accounts with other devices and online services. The post reads as follows :-

Outlook 2013 uses newly-added support for the rich Exchange Active Sync (EAS) protocol that has become the gold standard used by smartphones and other mobile devices. EAS will sync mail, calendar, contacts and tasks from your Outlook.com account! We’ve heard many requests from users who want to sync their tasks from an Outlook.com account, and now you can.

Does this bit of information help you make a better decision as to whether to jump aboard the Outlook 2013 bandwagon? We suppose a fair amount of people would have answered in the affirmative.
