Microsoft Research could hit a potential goldmine with one of their forays, that is being able to convert spoken English into Mandarin, taking all but a few seconds’ delay, now how about that? The good news, in essence, does not just stop there, as it is also able to output Mandarin speech in the vocal style of the original speaker, now how about that? This technology certainly wowed the crowd when it was recently demonstrated by Microsoft’s research chief Rick Rashid in Tjianjin, China, on October 25th, meaning such an achievement took its own sweet time to hit the major newswires.
Rick Rashid spoke eight English sentences into the lab’s new speech-recognition, translation and generation system, and all of it were converted/translated to Mandarin flawlessly, impressing a crowd that comprised of 2,000 students and academics. This was made possible thanks to different stages of the speech-to-speech process, where it involves the implementation of a novel neural networking (machine learning) system which effectively reduces word-recognition errors to one in seven or eight. This increases the chances of Bing Translate to create intelligible Mandarin text to feed into the speaking engine.

It seemed that the CyanogenMod website has been transferred from a .com to a .org after the domain holder made a demand for money. This particular move comes across after the Android ROM community’s discovered that the domain holder wanted to make a quick buck on the domain and project, where the Cyanogen team was asked for $10,000 so that they can retain control of the domain. The domain owner was said to have impersonated Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik, hoping to form referral deals in the process and make a killing off the non-profit organization’s work.
Upon discovery of this deception, Ahmet Deveci asked $10,000 for the domain, where the community’s blog issued a statement that “we won’t (and can’t) pay.” After hearing this, Deveci sabotaged the DNS so that no one else can access the project. CyanogenMod will be making use of the .org domain as its primary location, where the .com will be redirected there. Good to know that all the drama is over now, and the CyanogenMod team can get back to development.

Computers are repositories for important documents and personal files. That is why users ought to guard their computers with their life. Unfortunately for NASA, one of its laptops was stolen a few weeks ago. The stolen laptop was issued to an employee at the NASA headquarters in Washington. Two weeks ago, the laptop was stolen from a locked car, along with it personnel information such as the social security numbers of its employees. The stolen laptop was reportedly password-protected, however, the disk wasn’t fully-encrypted, which means that it is easier to hack.
NASA is now investigating the theft and is hiring specialists and ID experts to help. Following the incident, NASA has banned the removal of unencrypted laptops from NASA and is warning employees about the perils of storing sensitive data on computers, as well as smartphones and tablets. “Information on the laptop could be accessible to unauthorized individuals,” said Richard Keegan, NASA’s Associate Deputy Administrator. “Because of the amount of information that must be reviewed and validated, it may take up to 60 days for all individuals impacted by this breach to be identified and contacted.”

Were you planning on getting your hands on Apple’s new iMacs? Word has it that these iMacs were supposed to arrive on the 27th of November, but according to the folks at MacBidouille, they claim to have received reports suggesting that will unfortunately not be the case. Apparently this is due to a delay in the production of the iMac, an issue that manufacturers ran into with the welding process, and it seems that this issue could cause the iMacs to be made available only in 2013. Yikes! As some of you guys know, the new iMacs are a lot thinner compared to their predecessor, an apparent engineering feat which we guess some of Apple’s manufacturing partners are having some problems replicating. In any case apart from this report, there has not been any official word from Apple regarding this possible delay, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled nonetheless. Anyone else put off by this delay?

Bugs in software are usually annoying and they range from being small annoyances to possibly rendering the software unusable entirely, but we guess once in a while a bug does pop up that we can’t help but smile at. It seems there are several reports on the internet about an OS X bug that will basically transform your Launchpad into an abstract looking piece of art. Apparently the way the bug works is that instead of applying the blur effect when opening up Launchpad, it instead applies the crystallize effect which results in the screenshot above. It’s weird, it’s sort of beautiful and it goes away after a while. We’re not sure what exactly causes it but it does not seem to be a widespread problem. If you own a Mac computer and come across the bug, be sure to capture a screenshot and send it to us! Anyone else experience this bug for themselves yet?

If you’e wondering what’s the hottest Windows 8 and Windows RT device right now, AdDuplex thinks it has the answer. AdDuplex, a cross-platform advertisement network for Windows developers, recently published a report detailing the stats of its ads on Windows 8/ RT and Windows Phone 8. The report shows that Microsoft’s Surface tablet is now the most popular “single” device on Windows RT, taking 11 percent of the overall market. HP’s Pavilion g6 notebook and Pavilion dv6 notebook came in at second place, and Samsung’s 700T took the third spot.
AdDuplex says that they are now having hits from nearly 3 thousand different devices running Windows 8 r Windows RT on a daily basis. Although the Surface tablet is the most popular single device running Windows RT, AdDuplex adds that Microsoft is just second in the manufacturer charts. Intel is the top Windows 8/ RT manufacturer, at least for AdDuplex. Following Microsoft are Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo, and Toshiba. It’s important to note that the stats are only based on AdDuplex’s ads. Other reseachers might beg to disagree.

Google has introduced some minor updates on Google Drive, allowing you to have an easier time finding, organizing, and viewing stuff on Google Drive itself. You can search by person, which comes in handy should you be unable to remember the name of a file, although you know who was the person who shared it with you. Drive search will now auto-complete people’s names, so that it is easier to look up the kind of stuff that you’re searching for.
Apart from that, you can also view Google Earth map files, where you open them, preview and interact with Google Earth files (.kml and .kmz) right within Google Drive on the web. Not only that, you can create new folders while organizing files, and whenever you select files in your Drive list, apart from adding them to an existing folder, you are able to add them directly to a new folder.
Folks using Chrome can also drag and drop folders there, meaning entire folders can be sent from your desktop to Drive on the web in a jiffy. Misplaced something by accident in the trash? Not to worry, you can also search results from there, too. Are you enjoying the latest Google Drive and all it offers?
