Gmail search by size introduced

Google always wants to make life easier for you, and their suite of applications over the past few years have certainly grown in their own special way that makes working on the cloud a whole lot more fun and productive. Well, Google has done it yet again with their latest updates to Gmail, allowing you to search emails by size, more flexible date options, and an exact match among others. For instance, if you are on the lookout for emails that are larger than 3MB, just search for size:3m or larger:3m, and if you are searching for emails that were sent more than a year ago, type in older_than:1y and you’re good to go.

These changes were introduced alongside other more recent enhancements to search including the improved autocomplete predictions and a field trial for instant results from Gmail, Google Drive and others as you type. How has your experience been like with the latest Gmail search, and are you happy with it?

Skype offers free worldwide calls for the entire month

Everyone knows that Skype-to-Skype calls have always been free, but not when you have to make use of your Skype credits to call other landlines or mobile phones. While you need to pay some money, it is still far cheaper compared to the standard rate that traditional service providers charge. Good news now – Skype is offering a full month of unlimited calling to mobile devices and landline locations – and these need not even be people in your contact list alone, all you need to do is use the dialer. Sounds too good to be true, as though Christmas has come early? Well, the “fine print” says that fair usage policy is still applicable, which means you cannot chat for too long and hog the line, and premium as well as satellite numbers remain ineligible.

Retina MacBook Pros might be seeing drop in frame rate after EFI update according to reports

If you own a Retina MacBook Pro, there have been reports (via the Apple Support Forums) that after the latest EFI update, some users have been experiencing a drop in frame rate while running graphically intensive applications, like gaming for example, with the GeForce GT 650M graphics card. Some users have reported that a temporary fix can be achieved through a SMC reset. There has been some speculation that in the latest EFI update, these lower thresholds and underclocking of the GPU was done on purpose in order to reduce a certain whine that is emitted from the MacBook Pros when placed under a heavy load, or basically to help prevent overheating even while being utilized for general use. Others have suspected there might be a miscommunication between the firmware and the thermal bridges used to monitor the temperature. Are any of our readers experiencing this drop in frame rate after the EFI update, and if so what are your thoughts on the matter – intentional or bug?

FileLocker delivers encrypted cloud storage

Storing your data on the cloud sounds like a novel idea, and many of us do already work from the cloud itself – but the thing is, just how secure is our data there? Perhaps the introduction of the FileLocker encrypted cloud storage would help strengthen your faith in the security of cloud storage, no? Just to get off on the right footing, FileLocker is a folder sync and collaboration service, where it touts to deliver end-to-end military-level encryption of files which are stored on its servers. In layman’s terms, all data will be encrypted on your desktop, during transit with 256-bit SSL, as well as in the cloud. Normally, web storage services tend to leave out all three stages in terms of data encryption.

Having said that, FileLocker will primarily have its crosshairs firmly entrenched on small and home businesses, and you will be able to enjoy 25GB of free online storage for up to five users, making it quite the decent deal for consumers as well. You can open a paid account from as low as $5-per-user a month, now how about that?

Pizza functions as trackpad for your notebook

If you grew up watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then you would know that their favorite food was pizza, although come to think of it, I would have lost my appetite if I were to eat in a sewer. Oh, the smell of it all! Even the best pepperoni and oodles of cheese in the world won’t be able to nudge my appetite under such circumstances. Well, good thing we live in far more hygienic conditions, and for those who tend to work in front of their computer for hours on end, how about getting a quick bite to refuel your body? Nothing quite makes for a delicious bite than a slice of pizza – although this time around, the pizza itself could function as your notebook’s trackpad.

Whoa – time to back up a bit here, what do you mean, using a pizza as a trackpad? Well, Joel Adams had a mind to hook up a few slices of pizza to his notebook with a Makey Makey board acting as an intermediary, allowing one to scroll and click around the Internet. The main downside to this improvisation? Your keyboard is going to get a whole lot greasy, smeared with cheese and other condiments all over the place.

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Release Preview is now available

There has been whispers of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 being made available to the masses in due time, and I guess all of that waiting has finally paid off – where the Release Preview of Internet Explorer 10 is now ready to be downloaded from Microsoft’s site if you so desire to have a go at the Windows 7 build. It is said to come with a similar look and feel as that of the Windows 8 counterpart, where you will be able to take advantage of your computer’s hardware acceleration support, while enjoying full-screen browsing, additional multitouch support as well as a predictive “Flip ahead” feature which intends to make the best guess as to what kind of page you want to read or see next.

Folks who own a Windows 7 powered machine which does not come with a touchscreen display are still able to take advantage of the multitouch gestures in Internet Explorer via a trackpad, with all the relevant drivers in place, of course. Fret not, I am quite sure that you will not miss much if you have not given such multitouch gestures a go before, and after all, there is nothing wrong with enjoying the standard issue mouse and keyboard, is there?
