Some notebook vendors expected to continue pushing Windows 7 devices for the remainder of the year [Rumor]

Windows 7It wasn’t too long ago that Windows 8 was released to the masses which resulted in 4 million upgrades in less than a week, which means logically we can expect to see manufacturers start updating their products with the latest Windows operating system, right? While that might hold true for some companies, a report from Digitimes has suggested that some notebook manufacturers (no names were mentioned) will continue hawking their Windows 7 products in hopes to finish off their current inventory for the remainder of the year.

In fact their source has revealed to them that some manufacturers are offering extremely low-priced notebooks around $359-399 in hopes that it will attract more customers. The report from Digitimes has also suggested that demand for Windows 8 notebooks will only take place in the first half of 2013. Digitimes might not be the most accurate when it comes to these sorts of insider information, but they have been right in the past so perhaps taking this with a grain of salt might be a good idea for now, but what do you guys think? Would you rather get a notebook with Windows 7 that’s priced really low, or would you rather spend a bit more and get one optimized for Windows 8?

Google redesigns search results

The Internet’s search king, Google, has unveiled a new way of presenting search results and if you noticed, there was additional whitespace sans a sidebar. This design is not an experiment, but rather, has been made official. The whole idea for the tweaked look is to deliver a consistent search experience “across the side variety of devices and screen sizes people use today” for users. With the lack of sidebars, while transferring the search options to a bar on top of the search results page, Google has freed up additional room for its Knowledge Graph results.

How do you find the way the search results are now presented? Those who are nostalgic about the old look might not be too happy, but if you prefer the older look, all you need to do is click on the “Search tools” options, and it will deliver similar options as before. Right now, only folks living in the US will be able to take advantage of the new design, and needless to say, Google has plans to deliver this spanking new search results design to folks living in other regions, and in other languages, too. Check out Google’s full announcement right after the jump.

Cloud TV project looking for job applicants

There is a new job posting that appeared on Microsoft Careers, pointing out the fact that Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business is currently looking for new faces for a kind of cloud-based TV platform that has been dubbed “Cloud TV”. The careers which went up on the Internet did not reveal too much information, although we do know that Redmond is after skilled software engineers who do have adequate experience in web technologies including HTML5 and JavaScript, in addition to having dipped their toes in mobile and browser application development prior.

Assuming Cloud TV takes off in a big way (we do hope that Microsoft will reveal more about the project), this would mean Microsoft will further strengthen their already strong presence in the media world, having products like the Xbox 360 deliver a slew of interactive content right in the comfort of your living room. What, in your opinion, do you think that the Cloud TV project is all about, and do you have any speculation on it?

Skype to replace Windows Live Messenger?

Skype logoHearing whispers on the ground that software giant Microsoft is going to close the doors on Windows Live Messenger is not a surprise, especially when the company already owns Skype. It makes financial as well as business sense – you need not have resources allocated to what many people would have deemed as archaic, especially when you also own a far superior product under your wing. The Verge claims that the “Windows Live Messenger service will be retired in the coming months and integrated into Skype.”

Will an announcement be made later this week to all but confirm that Windows Live Messenger is about to be sent into retirement? Well, we guess it is but a matter of time, so those who have had fantastic memories with Windows Live Messenger, perhaps now would be a good time to make a backup of all your conversation archives as well as take as many screenshots as you want before the service closes down for good. Perhaps Windows Live Messenger might be retained, but it will not come with any more updates unless truly necessary (such as a potential security loophole and the like). Are you still using Windows Live Messenger and the likes of ICQ?

You might want to check your bank balance before that though, as the Samsung ATIV smart PC has been slapped with a rather hefty $799.99 price point, while the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is a wee bit more affordable at $499.99 a pop. Skype prepaid cards revealed for the UK

Skype (a division of Microsoft after their buy out a while back) has just introduced a range of new prepaid cards that will see action in the UK, where folks who do not have a credit card (by choice or because they do not qualify for it) will now be able to top up their Skype accounts from as low as £10. Not only that, there is also a second £20 card which will soon make its way among UK retailers, where they include Asda, Currys, PC World, Sainsburys and WHSmith. Regardless of the denomination, they can be redeemed worldwide via Skype’s online portal.

Mexico might have reached the finish line first, but there seems to be rumblings on the ground that more countries will soon be able to expect their own currency-specific cards in due time – and in all probability, before the year is over. You can take advantage of this prepaid credit in order to pony up dough for your Skype subscriptions, where among them include unlimited world calling bundles that begin from £8.49 monthly. Sounds as though Microsoft has timed it perfectly for the soon-to-be Windows Phone 8 Skype app.

Entire National Geographic volume fits on 160GB hard drive

Now here is an interesting bit of trivia that you might be interested to know, assuming you are a buff for fantastic and quirky facts. Do you know that with just 160GB of storage space, you are able to store away a digitized copy of every single issue of National Geographic? Yes sir, the 160GB hard drive will not only hold every single article ever published in National Geographic, but it will also have room for all the advertisements printed to date, in addition to amassing thousands of photographs – all of them hailing all the way back from 1888 to 2009.

Needless to say, the 160GB hard drive will also feature a bunch of extras, including a bonus DVD that carries with tips on shooting lovelier photos, a behind-the-scenes look at just how each copy of National Geographic is created from the start to the end, as well as exclusive interviews with personalities that National Geographic thought would be interesting. You can more or less say that you are traveling through a time capsule when you read those old school articles from 1888 onwards, which come to think of it, dates back two centuries!
