Microsoft Windows Azure and Office 365 headed for China, thanks to 21Vianet

Here is a wee bit of news that folks in China, the world’s most populous country, would find interesting if they happen to be users of Microsoft products, especially Microsoft Windows Azure and Office 365. It seems that Microsoft’s cloud service is headed in that direction without any of the torrential rains associated with it, although the Chinese offerings will be under the supervision of 21Vianet, a data center services company that is based in China. Microsoft took the route of licensing their technology instead of serving it up themselves, meaning the service will be subject to Chinese law instead of U.S. law.

According to a Forrester research, the “public cloud market in China will grow from $297 million in 2011 to $3.8 billion in 2020.” This is definitely another way for Microsoft to grow their revenue, especially after seeing the success of Amazon Web Services that currently is tipped to run approximately one percent of the Internet. Google and the rest of the crowd are trying to play catch up here, and Microsoft does not want to lose out on the rather lucrative pie.

Coca-Cola Work It Out Calculator

Coca-Cola in Great Britain has come up with what they call the ‘Work It Out Calculator‘, where it was developed in association with ex-Olympian and professor Dr. Greg Whyte, in order to share with the rest of the world the importance of balancing the kind of energy that enters your body, as well as energy spent. This is an online tool which allows you to pick your your favorite Coca‑Cola beverage, and after consuming it, will also share a list of various exercises so that you are able to burn off the calories consumed. Take for example a can of Coca-Cola that has 139 calories – you will need to play 17 minutes of basketball or vacuum your home for 51 minutes in order to burn the entire can. Salsa dancing takes the shortest amount of time at just 14 minutes, and I wonder how many hours of Diablo 3 gaming does it take to do so?

Of course, there would be those who have a different school of thought – avoid drinking all the fizzy drinks like Coca-Cola altogether, and settle for far more nutritious and healthy drinks such as natural fruit juices and of course, water. At least you do not need to run the risk of getting diabetes along the way, but if you cannot give up your daily intake of Coke, the Work It Out Calculator does make for a fun site to visit.

Google Has Already Updated Post-Sandy NY Transit Maps

If you’ve been living under a stone and missing out on non-tech news for the past week, a pretty major hurricane hit the Eastern seaboard including the Unofficial Capital of the World, New York City. Although the storm’s gone, there’s a lot of damage: some are saying that the New York subway could take months to get back to full service, and parts of New Jersey are absolutely wiped. Google’s been trying to help, by putting crisis maps and links to support services on the main page. But today they also updated Maps to reflect the damage done. Satellite photos now reflect the most recent NOAA images.

But here’s something that New Yorkers will especially appreciate: even as Mayor Bloomberg tries to get everyone safely to work in the most confusing way possible, Google is making it easy by updating its transit directions for the city. That means Google’s already added the temporary shuttle buses and subway closings to its transit directions. Thanks, Google!

Oh, and by the way, even after Apple’s most recent iOS 6 update, if you ask for public transit directions from Maps, it will take you to the app store.

Amazon Launches Cloud Drive Photos for Android

Earlier today, Amazon launched its first in-house game for Android and iOS, and now they’ve brought another app to the Google Play store. Amazon announced its Cloud Drive Photos app, which, like similar apps, allows users to sync and share photos through the magic of Amazon servers. It’s free, and you get 5GB of storage, but if you need more space, 20GB is only $10 per year, although it would be nice if they threw that in with Prime membership as well. And it goes without saying that this app will play nicely with Kindle tablets as well.

If you were looking for another way to upload your private photos to the cloud, and you have an Android phone or tablet, go download it from Google Play now.

Microsoft outspends Apple 3 times for research and development

You know what they say – the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and when it comes to Microsoft’s research and development pudding, it is three times as large as what Apple has in their oven, forking out $9.8 billion compared to Cupertino’s $3.4 billion. Of course, they are fundamentally two different companies as one concentrates on mostly software and services, while the other has quite an array of hardware with some software on the side, but for the average layperson, do you think that pumping in more money to R&D always leads to better financial performance in the market?

I guess the answer is open to debate, and at one point, we should see diminishing returns. It is rather interesting to note that Apple did spend a billion dollars more compared to what it did in previous years, making it the largest increase ever for research and development work in Apple’s history to date. This is in stark contrast to what Steve Jobs mentioned in the past when asked on the amount of consumer research that went into the iPad, where he mentioned, “It isn’t the consumers’ job to know what they want.”

I guess this means consumers want the iPad mini this time round?

Pinch interface helps you hook up different devices simultaneously

The pinch-and-zoom interface is something that we are all extremely familiar with, especially when touchscreen devices are all the rage these days. Well, here we are with the Pinch interface that will hook up displays from multiple touch-based devices together, and it is currently being worked on by a research group at the Tokyo University of Technology. Watching the video above will show you how it works, but if your connection is too slow, then perhaps a verbal explanation will suffice.

Basically, whenever you place your thumb and index finger on two adjacent screens and pinch them, the screens will link up automatically without any fuss. You can line them up freely, regardless of whether it is vertical or horizontal, and should the pictures be misaligned, they will even match up, now how about that? All the connected devices will know of each other’s positions over WiFi, so you can imagine the kind of visual effect one gets when connecting iPhones and iPads together. What would you do if you had access to the Pinch interface?
