Earth on Yahoo Auction, winning bid stands at $87,000 now

Who would have thought that our earth would actually belong to someone, and that someone has decided to auction it off to the highest bidder? Appearing on the Japanese Yahoo Auction page, earth started with a price of just 69 yen (!!!), which was the equivalent of $0.86, but as at press time, the Auction page is still up, although the price of our precious earth has ballooned to $87,000 thereabouts after conversion. Definitely a bargain considering the amount of real estate you will be getting, but bear in mind that the earth you’re getting has been listed as “authentic” and “used,” with a “no return” policy in tow.

The seller claims that the earth was bestowed unto him by the Almighty Himself, who actually handed it over to him in a dream. Since it is not the best of times at the moment, perhaps it would be more prudent to sell the whole earth and what – pay rent to the highest bidder in the end? According to the seller, each bid ought to be accompanied by a message that oozes with seriousness in the intention to own the earth, and should there be an excess of prank bids, he will close the auction, starting over at 69 yen all again.

Google+ Hangouts gets updated with sidebar feature and colorful notifications

Google+ Hangouts has just gotten better. Google developer Amit Fulay posted an update today on his Google+ page saying that the popular Google+ Hangouts on the desktop will be getting a few visual and functional updates. Among the updates mentioned, one of them is a sidebar that can be hidden and shown, depending on the user’s preference. Items like invites, chat, and apps are now consolidated into the sidebar.

Hangouts is also getting colorful notifications. Alerts now appear in red, actions in blue, and announcements in grey, making it easier to read and respond to notifications while you’re inside the hangout. Lastly, apps are now easier to find and manage since the sidebar will display a user’s frequently used apps, as well as other ones active in the hangout. Amit says that users can also remove apps straight from the sidebar. Google will be rolling out the updates in the next day or so.

Lord of the Rings Online finally gets a Mac client

One of the drawbacks to owning a Mac is that not many games are released which are compatible with both Windows and Mac. Usually Mac compatible games are released later and while installing Bootcamp with Windows is an option, we guess it might be an inconvenience and unnecessary expense for some gamers who don’t think the cost is justified just to play a couple of games. Now the good news is that if you have been meaning to get Lord of the Rings Online but were bummed out by its lack of Mac support, you will be pleased to learn that the game will finally be getting a Mac client.

According to Turbine’s VP of Product Development, Craig Alexander, who spoke to the folks at TUAW, it seems that the Mac client for Lord of the Rings online will be coming this week. Apparently why the Mac version of the game took so long was because the developers were trying to build a native port, rather than depend on emulation or other methods. The Mac version is expected to be identical to the PC version, and it seems that the expansion for the game, Riders of Rohan, was developed with the Mac’s client in mind. The client will be downloadable as a beta and will be able to be downloaded directly from Turbine’s website when available.

Mac OS X 10.8.3 beta being prepared

It seems that from today onward, Apple has started to invite developers to give the next update to the Mountain Lion operating system a go, which more or less points toward the viability of a OS X 10.8.3 beta version in the pipeline. It seems that industry insiders claimed that only select members of Apple’s developer community were given invitations ahead of the new beta’s introduction. Apple has been pretty good at keeping a lid on things this time around, where we have absolutely no clue whatsoever as to the kind of features that one can find in OS X 10.8.3. During this pre-release beta period, developers are able to give OS X 10.8.3 a thorough grinding, making sure that one’s applications are up to snuff while weeding out potential bugs before the update is finally made available for public consumption.

Just a little bit of history lesson here – the last update to Mountain Lion, known as OS X 10.8.2, was introduced sometime in the middle of September, where it introduced system-wide integration with Facebook. All new Macs will have Mountain Lion pre-installed within, and if you are interested, you can always pick it up from the App Store as a $20 upgrade.

Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $15?

You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It seems, however, that you are able to take advantage of a loophole in the official Windows Upgrade Offer site to purchase Windows 8 Pro for just $15, never mind you purchased a Windows 7 PC before June 2nd of this year, while informing Microsoft otherwise. This has been tried and tested by some who have said that it works – basically, anyone is able to pick up Windows 8 at Microsoft’s promotional price, where it was originally meant for late Windows 7 adopters only.

Regardless of when you purchased your PC, just inform Microsoft that you bought a Windows 7 PC within the past two months. Should you select a date that is close to June 2nd, you will be prompted for the current Windows 7 key, so choose somewhere nearer to October and you won’t be prompted. The rest of the details can be found in the source link, so if you want to have a clear conscience, skip it, otherwise check it out. No idea on whether Microsoft will close this loophole though, but they have been duly informed.

Microsoft sued due to Windows Live Tiles

Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 have one thing in common – the implementation of Windows Live Tiles. I find the idea of Live Tiles to be a fascinating one, as you get to know what is going on in real time at a glance on your handset without having to actually fire up the app or program. Unfortunately for Microsoft, they seemed to have hit a speed bump this time around as a smaller operating system technology designer will be bringing Microsoft to court, citing that the software giant actually copied its technology for use in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

SurfCast filed a complaint yesterday in a U.S. District Court in Maine, touting that Microsoft infringed one of its four patents — No. 6,724,403 — by “making, using, selling, and offering to sell devices and software products” covered by SurfCast’s patent. Among these include mobile devices that operate on the Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 operating systems, in addition to PCs which run on Windows 8/RT. We await with bated breath as to how Microsoft will handle this particularly sensitive situation.

LG ET83 Touch 10 monitor optimized for Windows 8 action

Here we are with a monitor to go along with your spanking new Windows 8 powered desktop – the LG ET83 Touch 10 monitor, sporting a 10-point IPS display that will definitely expand the horizon of touchscreen technology. The entire LG ET83 Touch 10 monitor measures 23” across diagonally, and you can use all ten of your fingers on it simultaneously, making it the ideal choice for folks who want to enjoy an enhanced touch computing experience without having to perform a complete and total overhaul/upgrade.

Tablet and smartphone owners ought to be able to take to the Touch 10 monitor like a duck to water, and would even feel as though their smartphones do not offer enough in the long run. After all, majority of touchscreens out there use a two-finger recognition system, but the LG Touch 10 monitor increases that amount fivefold.

The LG ET83 Touch 10 monitor will arrive in South Korea from November onwards, before it is introduced in Europe and the rest of the world. There is no word on pricing as at press time, but we intend to pounce on that when all is revealed eventually.
