CyberPower PC unveils Fang Taipan gaming laptop with NVIDIA SLI GPU configurations

Personally I’d take a desktop over a laptop for gaming any day, but there are those who are constantly on the move and require the mobility, and for those gamers custom computer gaming manufacturer, CyberPower PC has debuted a new gaming laptop dubbed the Fang Taipan, a device which the company is proudly boasting to be the “most powerful customizable dual Nvidia GPU gaming laptop.” Whether it lives up to that claim remains to be seen, although with a base price of $1,819, we certainly hope that it will be able to deliver as it promises.

So what sort of specs are we looking at here? Well for starters, one of its highlights is its dual SLI GPU setup which uses two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680Ms in SLI mode. It will be powered by Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPUs that users can choose from, which includes the rather speedy i7-3940XM 3.0GHz Extreme Edition Ivy Bridge Mobile Processor, support for up to 32GB of dual-channel DDR3 RAM, two detachable SATA-3 hard drives with hardware RAID 0/1 support, an illuminated keyboard where the colors can be changed depending on preference, an a 17.3” 16:9 LED-backlit 1080p display with an Onkyo sound system that features a built-in subwoofer. More details and the different configurations can be found at CyberPower PC’s website, where you can also place your order and expect it to ship on the 26th of October.

Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 announced

Another day, another keyboard, and here we are with yet another model from Swiss hardware maestros Logitech – the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810. Just what kind of value will this keyboard be able to offer? For starters, since it connects via Bluetooth, the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 will play nice with Windows, iOS and Android devices, while hoping those on non-Windows platforms might be persuaded to jump aboard thanks to its layout that has been specially designed for Windows 8. It can pair up to a trio of devices simultaneously, letting you switch among (for example) your PC, tablet and smartphone at the push of a button without any hassle.

Taking its design cues from the rest of the consumer electronics industry where “slim is in”, the Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 will come in a thin form factor, sporting actual brushed aluminum and sleek lines. It even comes with auto-adjusting illumination so that you can work even in low light conditions as its laser-etched key characters will remain bright and easy to read at all times. Proximity detection has been thrown into the mix, where it will turn on the lighting whenever your hands approach it, dimming or brightening up automatically according to the light level in the room.

It is said to deliver 10 days of battery life on a full charge, but of course, we do not mind putting it to the test and see whether it lives up to such claims. The Logitech Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard K810 is tipped to arrive in the US as well as across the pond this month and the next, respectively, for $99.99 a pop. [Press Release]

Xbox Music announced by Microsoft, Apple iTunes and Amazon Cloud Player to watch out?

You could say that the advent of the MP3 format as well as Apple’s slick marketing (coupled with decent hardware, of course) of the iPod certainly fueled the boom of digital music, while signaling the death knell for the cassette Walkman and eventually, CD-toting Discman. Microsoft must have seen Apple’s iTunes and Amazon’s Cloud Player to be a viable business to be in, hence they have announced a potential heavyweight in the department, calling their service the Xbox Music which will be available for their Xbox consoles from tomorrow onwards.

The Xbox Music service will be expanded to Windows-powered computers and tablets in due time, including the Windows 8 and Windows RT versions of the upcoming Surface tablet when October 26th rolls around to coincide with the Windows 8 operating system launch. Not only that, smartphones (definitely the ones running on Windows Phone 8) will also be getting the Xbox Music service as well. With Xbox users spending up to 60% of their time on entertainment services on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft figured out that this is a good time to enter the fray with Xbox Music, which will continue where the ill-fated Zune service failed to take off. Microsoft will make Xbox Music available in 22 countries first, and hopes to deliver the service to iOS and Android-powered devices from 2013 onwards. [Press Release]

Dell XPS 12 hybrid tablet notebook

Dell has certainly remembered that Windows 8 is going to be released at the end of this month, which is why it makes perfect sense to be prepared to receive the operating system. What better way to do so than to come up with a piece of hardware that will support Windows 8? This is where the interesting looking Dell XPS 12 hybrid tablet notebook comes in, where it is essentially two devices in a single form factor. You can opt to use it as a fully-featured, full-powered notebook when the situation calls for it, and should you need a tablet to get the job done, then the Dell XPS 12 can easily be transformed to suit the occasion, turning into a fully-featured touch-powered tablet. The hinge for the display does seem to look rather fragile – we sure hope it has been put through its paces beforehand!

Obviously, while in tablet format, you will not find some special nanotechnology at work that automatically trims down the size of the Dell XPS 12 to make it super thin, so this will be nowhere near the thinnest tablet claim. On the other hand, when it is in tablet mode, the display will ensure that the keyboard is completely covered to protect it from dirt and spills. You can pick up the Dell XPS 12 from $1,199.99 onwards. [Press Release]

Windows 8 Pro pre-orders open

For those who are interested in reserving your copy of Windows 8 Pro, you can do so today, in addition to placing pre-orders for Windows 8 computers as well. The cost of reserving a packaged DVD of the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro would be $69.99, and when you finally have the package safe and sound in your hands, you will find the exterior to be refreshingly different, just like how the entire Windows ecosystem has been reimagined. Depending on random luck, the Windows 8 Pro upgrade package will feature one of 5 vibrant illustrations. Not only that, Microsoft has taken the greener route by using paper based materials (other than the DVD of course), a move that resulted in an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption. Not only that, the total packaging weight will make Weight Watchers smile, as there is a slimming factor of 41%.

Amazon.com, Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot and the Microsoft Store and many other retailers will offer the Windows 8 Pro when it is available. Folks who prefer to wait it out until October 26th will be able to retrive the upgrade online via Windows.com using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, where you will obviously fork out a cheaper $39.99 rate for obvious reasons – there is no packaging to worry about, and neither do you need to fret over the package arriving in front of your doorstep.
